Important part of my youth.... there will never be another tj's
The whole newport punk scene was centred around TJ's and Cheap Sweaty Fun. Saw so many bands because of the great people involved (*cough Simon and Pete). Amazing times and a great tribute to the mighty Johnny Sicolo.
TJ’s was the first place I started going to when I was 15/16…that was in 1994.
The phrase ‘you had to be there’ is completely apt in this instance..there was something absolutely magical about it..I went there right up until it closed..never saw one bit of trouble..John kicked me out once when I was 16/17 because I damaged a plant in the lounge area.
Saw so many great bands there..remember seeing Supergrass supported by the Bluetones for £5 in 1994.
A truly iconic venue…great memories
I got a bit teary watching this. This was my stamping ground.
Played here with 2 of my bands many times ( next rung & in crimson ruin)
I started going there from the age of 15 until it shut down ( I'm 40 now)
The place genuinely was the LEGENDARY TJ's
I lived less than 5 mins from Tj’s and it was open pretty much every night.....I would pop in see Jon ..get a dig in the ribs and have fun no matter what was going on....seen many great bands from oasis in 94 to sugar hill hill gang in 99 and subway in 2000.....the selector and so on.....top venue that supported local bands and talent....R.I.P Jon. X
Started going there early 90’s and spent every weekend there, and quite a bit through the weeks when ‘secret’ shows were on etc from about 93 to the early 2000’s and always went there at least twice a month till it closed. So many many memories.....all good and a lot awesome.....
Somethings gotta go for you to miss it........
had some of the best times of my life in this place, and every one mixed here no matter what your music preference or style it was amazing
We had some great times, great memories and a lot of lost memories at TJ's, Newport will never be the same, the youth of today will miss it all. Shame.
Rip JS.
Ps sorry for jumping on your back that 1 time, good enough to let me in the following week. happy days
Had some awesome times at TJs it was a sad day when it closed
I was a regular visitor to Tj`s in the mid late 80`s. Great memories and thanks for the film.
TJs died the same time as john . Miss this place just like so many miss john just wish someone would carry on the punk/rock scene in newport . Still like of TJS in 2023 wishing it was still there
I had many great nights in TJS whether they were at club nights or at gigs they were fantastic times, the toilets were perilous at certain points of he night, the lagers/beers came in cans, it was no frills and it was wonderful. No one judged anyone in there, all were accepted as long as they weren’t causing unnecessary trouble. I remember he day that John died the following day people started texting me saying ‘Paul, you’re in the news and it’s not for anything bad’ I was a bit confused until I saw that he tribute to John that I put up on MySpace which simply read ‘RIP John Sicolo you were a legend, I just hope that TJs might live on’ at the time my MySpace was linked up to my Twitter account so the status went on there at the same time the BBC news were following me on there and used it in their article about John dying. That place will never be replicated no matter how hard anyone tries and I for one will miss it but keep all the great memories that I have of that place. Big love to John, TJS and the memories that he helped us create.
TJ's definitely deserves a feature length documentary. Absolutely loved the place and went there almost every weekend between 1992 and 2000.
Cheers for a cracking wee video. :)
I’m in the photo of Hole - great night and many more!
Some of the best gig atmosphere/ performances. Very proud. Good video well done.
That was absolutely excellent!! Really enjoyed it.
What a pleasant surprise, well done folks..!!!
Great lil piece there, nicely put together with some fun shit thrown in. I remember going to Tj's the first time when i was about 16 about 97-98 always had a laugh good people good music good times! Seen so many mighty fine bands there over the years an made loads of tidy friends who i still speak to now!
I for one would love to see a feature length doc on John and Tj's!
Sad to see it close
Seen loads of great bands here, had some fun and not so fun nights here. It was a shit hole but if you was an Outcast you drank here.
How have I never seen this before. I never agreed with the Little Seattle moniker. It was way too diverse to pin point, always hoped something would rise from the ashes but alas. Haven't been to Newport in an age but remember seeing it empty.
Remember those horrid toilets. I think I still have tickets (unused) for Girlschool in there and also remember having tickets unused for some American NuPunk type band. Weren't my thing. Saw Ivor Beynon there and that was hysterical night out.
I painted that UV TJs backdrop, Does anyone know where its gone?
nice job .
Epic epic venue so many black outs and cool bands
Saw the Vandals there a number of times....Really good times!!! Lived in Reading at the time! Such a shame its gone, I really hope someone can stump up the cash to bring TJ's back to life....wish i had he money
BRFC Hazard I saw the vandals there loads of time to, it was probably my favourite venue to go to gigs to.
Great! Nice little trip down memory lane... Let me know if you get any further with the full length and need any footage - I have lots. Promoted a night there for three years, and shot video, film, kept all the artwork & flyers, posters, etc...
Feel robbed on two aspects:
One: my Granch knew John and would have a drink with him every now n then as they got older. Sadly my Granch died when I was 3 so I don't know what John was like.
Two: I feel robbed with the fact that TJs is shutdown, and it annoys me when I hear so much legendary shit that happened there too! I'm lucky to hear my mam's stories of it from when she was younger...
But yeah, one way or another, I feel robbed.
im so gutted i never had a chance to go there!:/ closed just before i was allowed to go to gigs!
I temember the toilets best of all. You could have made a movie just about them.
to me - its a pretty good night out
balls out rock n roll
