Switched to Black Hawks just before I got out of Army they were more comfortable for troop, but man there is something about the Huey loved being a grunt flying in those beautiful birds.
@@GarthvanZyl-Medicare-EMR I've been on a helicopter ride in a 206 Jetranger in Alaska and that feeling is now one of the reasons why I want to become a helicopter pilot for a living
@@GarthvanZyl-Medicare-EMRi love sound of big two blades and turbine engine ! Remember me old films about Vietnam that used kind of helicopter during 60’s
I was a Maintenance Test Pilot (retired/veteran) in a UH-1H/V, Marine UH-1N (twin engine), UH-1H-11 (Super Huey) in Colombia South America (drug interdiction program) and unless you've flown one or had a family member or friend give you the low down, you should probably keep your comments to yourself. It has a sound and vibration that you come to love. I have flown nine different helicopters (Bell 427, 430, 412EP, OH-58, 206 L1/L3/L4, TH-57, not including the above) in the past 30 years and I would rather fly a UH-1V and Super Huey before any of them.
No, it does not my friend. Could you imagine a M/R blade moving at 6600 Rpm. Hehehe It goes through a reduction gear which reduces it to 324 RPM. Hope that helps! Don't know how old you are, but the U.S. Army increased the age limit to 33 to enter the Warrant Officer Flight School Program. Might want to toss that around to some of your friends or family who thought they missed there chance. I can help them to pass the Flight Aptitude Selection Test (FAST).
No, it isn't, my friend. Could you imagine a M/R blade spinning at 6,600 RPM. Crazy! It is reduced to 324 RPM with a red line at 339 RPM. If any of your friends or family were looking at going to flight school and thought they missed the age limit of 27 years old, you can tell them that it has been increased to 33 years old.
Michael. Are there 2 different types of power to the main rotor? One is from the main shaft of the compressor turbine and the other is from the exhaust gasses turning the hot turbine section? The first one you cannot hold the rotor still while the second one you could hold the rotor still and throttle up the engine? I think it's the Cessna Caravan turbo prop that you can hold the blade still while the turbine is running, up to a certain point, as an example.
Awesome vid.. brings memories when 4 of us (SAR) were hanging from a Huey using McGuire rig technique back in the 70.. the wind blows tears out of your eyes.. thanks
All these whiny movie director critics: The creator of this vid is probably not expecting an Academy Award and he is probably not crying about your disapprovals. If you actually rode a Huey, you would appreciate this vid as it visibly demonstrates the vibration of the engine wind-up/warm-up. It's a UH-1, not a Buick.
Dallas I've flown (ridden) in two of them. On top of that, my dad flew (actually flew) them in Vietnam. Yes, amazing machines and they vibrate like a '64 Chevy pickup doing 40 mph down a washboard road. All the more reason to use as wide of a lens as possible to reduce the camera shake effect - AND to be able to have a better perspective of what's going on. All that aside, thanks for sharing your experience, Garth. Hindsight, 20/20. I hope to one day get a third ride in one.
What a wonderful bird, just love them, the sound, the looks, everything. Don't give two hoots about the so called video recording. Good vid all the same.

Really don't understand the harsh words about the video quality. OK, it sucks, but the guy that took the video doesn't owe anyone who watches it anything. The entitlement of some of these comments as if you actually deserve a high quality video of a Huey takeoff, and are being let down, is ridiculous. 99% of us would never have any sort of idea of what a chopper takeoff is like except for RUclips vids. Nobody is paying to watch this. You aren't entitled to cinema quality footage. So either watch it and glean whatever enjoyment you can from it, or frown at the quality and press the back button on your browser and try to find a different video. Taking the time to disparage the video quality as if you are personally offended that the quality isn't up to your exacting standards is just...kind of pathetic. If I was being given a ride in a Huey, and took a video, I'm sure my perspective would have been the same - just trying to document a cool experience in my life. Thanks for posting.
thanks for the support, this was a dream for a vety long time, 2 missed opportunities before this, and when i got the call i was there like a bear, faster than flash, blackberry on hand
For future endeavors: Small corrections with camera work. Smooth and methodical. Take 2-3 seconds to traverse 90 degrees. Cameras are not as sophisticated as the human eye.
Need a gimbal mount for that camera the shaking is horrible do you have the camera mounted on a spring so it shakes more need a Dramamine after watching your video.
It was my cellphone in my hand. It was a short notice opportunity and could not give a shit about all the negative comments people made....or make. The RUclips stabilisation feature fucked the video up....maybe I'll upload the original sometime
Use the digital/paper checklist aviator!! Took this pilot looonnng time to pull through effective translational lift...per the filming...runs on luck maybe? sayin'..
Wow. I hope anyone who has epilepsy doesn't watch this. This will trigger an attack. Gave me a headache. And it could have been so epic. I suppose a thank you is is order for posting in the first place, but take this advice: Get some camera lessons
why do you twist the throttle back and forth? are you finding a central position or a start point and what is the little gear shaped ring at the top edge of the throttle? Lots of questions sorry :)
from very good to very bad---if the transmission breaks off; everybody on the forward left side of the fuselage cabin area is dead------the torque will due you in.......
I stand by what I said - and if I'm ever fortunate enough to enjoy such a flight, I'll be damn sure to make a better job of the camera work and editing!

@pimuce yes they were very popular due to the fact that one could hoist the engine out the heli with a built in crane apparently
Reminds me of the time when me and my future wife were riding in a Huey Helicopter several times over in Germany in the Army.
