    sure you'll never make a million by posting these videos, but there are a lot of helicopter addicts like me who enjoy them immensely. Truly great "ride a long" videos where we can imagine we are there with you. Filming is a pain. We are grateful that you take the time to do it.

    it's truly amazing that these notar helicopters are so relatively rare & underused, apparently unappreciated in the helicopter world
    the degree of controllability plus safety just absolutely blows away ALL typically configured helicopters
    the removal of the fragile, dangerous tail rotor linkage is perhaps the biggest technical jump since the aircraft was invented
    time will tell.. & that said I watched & recommend the coax 2-D videos-- those little coax birds are very cool cost effective & again, technically better & safer than typical aircraft
    then again if if I had the wherewithal, I'd probably enjoying owning & flying one or more of each type ;)
    Yup. . rotorhead, guilty as charged

    • @stvafel803
      @stvafel803 8 лет назад +1

      The largest reason to this is that McDonnell Douglas still holds the patent for the system. It's a unproven system compared to a tail rotor and other manufacturers can't really use it or develop it without infringing on the patent.

    • @mountjoy23
      @mountjoy23 8 лет назад

      Render767 sloppy tail rotor authority, compromised w+b. There are a lot better ships out there.

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  8 лет назад +4

      mountjoy23 I have flown every MD369/500 and the 520 is my favorite! it's quiet, smooth, and way less taxing on the pilot! When the tail is setup correctly you can hover with out your feet on the pedals. It's so much quieter then a standard 500 that you will not believe it. We have the enhanced c20r so power is not a problem at all. She is a little heavier then a stripped out 500D but the power of the C20R makes up for it! And the 530FF drinks to much fuel and has a very heavy stick! Love the 520N!!!! ;)

    I know this is an old video, I think I watched it before ... years ago. I'll first admit that I don't know squat about what a chopper should sound like but for some reason in this video the non-jet noises I'm hearing in the background, one is standing out in particular this time..... it sounds like a worn bearing...... was anything like that fixed not long after this video ? Sorry, just curious :). Thanks for sharing the video.

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  5 месяцев назад

      @@ZaphodsPlanet It's a Turbine engine! They have a loud whine. Also this one has a notar system so there is a large Fan in the back spinning!

    • @ZaphodsPlanet
      @ZaphodsPlanet 5 месяцев назад

      @@KeithPatterson369D I'm familiar with the NOTAR setup as well as the general sound of MD helicopters having worked eons ago at an FBO. From the outside they do sound a lot different compared to Bell, Augusta and others due to the main rotor....... However the whine of the turbines is similar among Bell, MD and even turboprops. Having watched a load of videos of NOTAR helicopters the sound I'm noticing isn't in other NOTAR videos. It sounds like a bearing going bad someplace. So I was just curious and asked the question in the odd chance the original owner of the 520 happened in and might chime in.

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  5 месяцев назад

      @ZaphodsPlanet We have owned it since 2015! No bad bearing! That video was from 2016! We still own it! No bad bearings! Also that video I had a non filtered GoPro session 5. She is still flying great!

    • @ZaphodsPlanet
      @ZaphodsPlanet 5 месяцев назад

      @@KeithPatterson369D Cool, it's your bird then. Ah, so it must be some kind of audio artifact from the GoPro. The only helicopter I've ever been in was a Bell (small one, single turbine) and I was always surprised even in that one how oddly stable it felt riding in it. I've always loved the MDs, they just sound cool on top of being or looking like they were so much more controllable. They just move differently. Love the NOTARs. I was thrilled to see MD coming back to life after going into the shitter. Something that didn't all together surprise me as I had a friend that worked there and he had some stories....LOL. Have you heard anything about them bringing the NOTAR back into production? Anyway, thanks for taking the time to write back to give me the story on what I wasn't really hearing .... :)

    This makes me want to fly a helicopter. Is the reason the left pedal is further depressed, to counter the rotation of the main rotor? As you increase rpms, you'd have to push harder on the left pedal?

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  7 лет назад +1

      Michelle Pucca Yes as you pull more power for lift off it increases torque so it takes more left pedal! I cruise you don't need as much left pedal unless your pulling alot of power for a faster cruise!

      I remember many years ago reading this book (Chickenhawk) about a guy who wanted to fly helicopters. He described what it was like learning how to fly, and especially in the training helicopters they used back then. He ended up flying during the vietnam war and talked about landing in DMZ's that were so tight his rotors hit branches (I assume small), and he said how loud it was. Amazing helicopter pilots and heroes all in one.

      I read the same book thirty some years ago as a teenager (14ish). Wanted to become a pilot then. I had a pre-enlistment interview with a Navy recruiter and learned my medical condition would disqualify me from enlistment, let alone flying.

      Its a C20R! They start hot and Fast. When she in warm it will hit 820 on the TOT! The engine Builder said that's what he likes to see. C20B Starts a little colder. The main thing is that the Temp drops back off quickly. You don't want it to hang around up there!

    Many helo pilots fly the right seat, this is left seat. A design thing or preference thing? I know if I were a pilot I would want the stick in my right hand and the collective in my left as well.

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  2 года назад

      Well if your flying a long line the best helicopters are left seat PIC! If the helo was designed to be right seat it take a lot to legally convert them! All helos have the collective in the left hand and Cyclic in the right hand no matter where you sit. I have flown both left and right seat! Left fells better to me!

    • @KeithPatterson369D
      @KeithPatterson369D  7 лет назад

      steinderbush Hi good question! you need to know your rotor diameter! Plus you can see your rotor tips! I keep the trees and brush closer on my side and give more space in the right and rear of the aircraft! Just remember to go slow and smooth!

    • @Peorhum
      @Peorhum 7 лет назад +1

      I don't fly but I would imagine it would be like driving a car. In time you learn the size of your car and where you can fit. Of course in a car you don't crash and burn if you hit a tree while parking but I would think it is the same idea.
