Proud son of a retired Santa Fe/BNSF engineer. I wish there was a way to put this on my ipod.

Retired last year after 33 years as a hogger. From Needles to Seligman, Arizona, Needles to Barstow and Bakersfield to Barstow (and eventually to Needles). Lots of beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The trip from the San Jouquin Valley, through the Tehachapi mountains and the desert to Barstow was spectacular and sometimes way too exciting. Glad I don't have to hear the phone ring at 9pm anymore, calling me for a 10 hour trip over those mountains at 15mph.

I started in 1960 and retired in 2002 on the Santa Fe. I discount the merger with the BN, I was always a "Santa Fe" man and loved its history. After the merger in 1996 we became a "lawyer" driven outfit and the luster of the "Santa Fe" was gone.

A buddy of mine worked as a brakeman for ATSF when the merger went through, and he was given this video on VHS by the newly formed BNSF. All Santa Fe employees were given a copy of the video to preserve morale and ease their fears about the ATSF losing its identity. I watched it with him back then, and haven't seen it since. He told me it was a confidential company video and could not be copied or loaned out, and he honored that requirement. Great to see it again after all these years.

At 9:38 that RS3L heard in the distance made me cry. My great grandad loved the Santa Fe and anytime he was in Amarillo Texas he would hear that and he would shed a tear saying there goes the old girls. He passed in 2017 and when I heard the my memories took me back. Thanks you so much.

    This was really cool.
It is a damn sham BNSF seems bound and determined to ignore their heritage.
BN has a great history as does the ATSF.
I wish the bean counters in charge could realize that.

Kudos to Chuck Gierhart, Bob and the team. As a young BN to BNSF employee this instilled a pride in me that lasts to this day. Glad I found it. I can't listen to Lee Greenwood without my mind taking me here. Its been years since I left but it's interesting how foundational it was to me as it communicated being part of something bigger than myself and having a role in it all.

Came from a Santa Fe family. It was gone by the time I hired out so I went to the local short line. The railroads today are just lawyer driven out fits with no desire to run trains or continue railroading traditions. Hard to believe it has been 18 years

I Started with Santa Fe in 94. Back then it was run by a railroad family and was a great place to work. Road foreman were there to help you. After the BN "merger", the place is run through fear and intimidation. Virtually any variation from the rules, no matter how minor brings an investigation. I retire in two years and glad to be out of it.

The Santa Fe ruined themselves. BN basically bought em out. And the reason they paid Lee Greenwood to do this is cuz all the SF guys were crying!
