  • Check out my new song, Jim Croce's classic 'Time in a Bottle' it's out on all platforms.
Lots more chat this week with me, Max and Robbie about our personal experiences and just how different, the same thing was, for us all. There is still quite a few years to go for me with my changing voice and it is really good for me to hear from Max and Robbie about what it was like for them too, especially as they are much older and further down the line than I am.
For me this episode really highlights just how different each boys journey really is unique to them.
The final episode of 'One Boy, Two Voices' will be released on the 31st May.

My husband at 70yrs old is still a great singer. We've sung together for 50yrs. I've observed his mellow tone & Bass range is getting deeper, even when he speaks. So, the "change" is ever progressing, over time.

It definitely is but it’s at it’s most drastic and noticeable through the teenage years especially as a young teen so we really hope this helps support other young singers at what’s usually a very challenging time for them as a person too 🙏🏻 Alison (mum)

I sing also in Bassvoice or Baritonvoice. Tenorvoice is too high for me. It makes me angry, when our choirleader says, I sing too low and I must sing higher.

Thank you, Cormac, and the whole team doing this podcast 🙏.
One can just wish that young singers hear this treasure trove of knowledge, so that their voice change doesn't come a as complete surprise or worse.
Also, that they are encouraged to keep singing.

Boys, this is just amazing to me. I agree to a lot that you three stated but one is never acceptable and that is negativeness regardless. Negative only does harm to oneself as positiveness pushes you all to all of your talents. An example is me and my piano teacher of intense studies to earn his highest ever of 50 years of teaching. That would be Concert Pianist Artists. That came very hard to earn. I never got a excellent ever. Only a check mark, good or a very good only. Now to go with this and explain to you three, whenever I told my teacher impossible for me to do and can not do it, my teacher gave me positiveness and said yes you can and will. Guess who won? Me or my teacher? My teacher won because he believed in me and knew what I was capable of doing. The very same to you three. Bless you and stop being negative, let your heart do this always. It is inside of you always regardless. Cormac, more to come to your dad. What a day this is for me too. What a Podcast. Thank You so very much from you three. This is surely tops. I am impressed by these Podcasts. The Old Man from Maine, Brad

Indeed the comparison of the violin and the cello is a very good one. What is not always seen is that the cello does get a long neck and strings, but it takes some time to also grow the volume. And then as a Singer you have to find the way to use that volume. After the quite jumpy growth of the larynx, the growth of the room for resonance takes a lot longer. That makes the cello feel so uncomfortable initially. Add 65 I have the impression that the volumes of my body and their use still are developing.

Think it’s definitely something that keeps going that’s for sure it’s just this first bit that’s the most obvious with a change from high to low 🤗

Back when I was a teacher and working in schools, mainly in theatre, I worked a lot of singers. This included working with boys whose voices would begin to change in very individual ways (amongst all the other changes). The "sudden break" thing is kind of a myth and as you say, it is the disciplined choir and SATB make up which highlights it. In order to explain this, especially to boys, I would usually get them to focus on how the first 10 or 11 years of your life you effectively work towards being an expert child. Then, when the body is ready, it begins a significant process and journey of changing into an adult, physically, emotionally. There's no way to STOP it...but the process will take another 11 years. I always used to say imagine you're driving from a small road and ahead you see the motorway. But the slip-lane is made from cobble stones, so there will be a bit of a wobble on the way.
But at all times, keep singing, get qualified advice and support. But be patient.

I like these podcasts because it’s so informative and interesting. Out of curiosity, Cormac, will you be singing some sacred music in the future or are you going to concentrate on secular music ?

It’s been quite a while since I sang Ave Maria or anything like it really, that was back in 2021 when I was 12 😀 I’m enjoying singing the types of songs that I’m singing at the minute too but it’s a really good time to experiment with lots of different genres so for now I’m just going to sing what sounds good with my voice because not everything does yet especially more classical songs and then wait and see 🤗🎶

Cormac, I can give you a tip, but you may already know this. Drink lots of water and herbal tea. Drinking water and non-caffeinated beverages keep both our bodies and vocal cords hydrated. It’s best to drink room temperature or warm water before or during a voiceover session - water that’s too cold can restrict your vocal cords; drinks that are too hot can irritate them.
