PODCAST - Episode 1 - Right Place, Right Time! & Why my TWO Voices DO Matter

  • A very big warm welcome to episode one of 'One Boy, Two Voices'
    I've been very lucky. When I sang in my younger boy, high voice, it really did create some amazing opportunities for me.
    In episode one, I take it right back to the beginning and we chat about how it all began and highlight how I really wasn't even thinking about my voice changing then. I'm joined by my mum, Alison, who keeps me right on the order of things and explains what it was like from a grown - up's perspective, Professor Martin Ashley, a renowned voice change expert and author of many books on the subject and Matthew Todd, professional tenor and music educator, himself a former boy treble and survivor of his 'breaking' voice as he's still singing but he remembers it vividly.
    We also talk about how I was signed by global record label Decca (UMG) when I was just 11, dropped by them when I was 12 and how we kept recording and releasing music for the next few years with no label support at all.
    That's a whole lot of experience in a very short time for a young boy singer (and his mum and dad) and at the end of last year I realised just what a good position that put me in to try and help other young boys to keep singing when their voices change too.
    I'm 15 now, it's happened and I'm very fortunate to still be singing. I hope episode one sparks your interest for the rest of the story in the next 5 episodes too. It's a fun listen, I promise! there's really no science at all and if you have any connection to young boys who experience this please share with them too.

    Cormac when you said you tried to imagine all your friends being gone when you sang empty chairs. I lost all the people I loved the most and I’m the only one left. Every time I listen to it which isn’t very often I cry through the whole song especially the part when I live and you are gone. There was a table in my sister in laws apartment where all the ones who are gone sat. My husbands 6th anniversary was April 5th. I cry for them all, 2 sister in laws and husband at that table but my husband George was his name more. It is a very beautiful song but very emotional one for me

    So excited to listen to this and hear about your journey, Cormac 😊
    You may know of Aled Jones, a boy treble in his time and relatively famous for it. His voice broke while recording an album on his 16th birthday! Every experience is different and a bit like Aled, it seems as though your parents have played a huge role in keeping you grounded and not shying away from the truth about what was going to happen to you, pre voice change.
    As always, I look forward to what the future holds for you 😊

    Truly inspirational and so honest. This is the beginning of a testimony that will help immensely all treble’s get through this stage! This is fascinating to begin to understand a little of what you’ve gone through. It’s an amazing journey and you, your mum, and guests tell it eloquently. Thank you! I can’t wait to hear the next one. You are gifted and courageous!!

    Excellent presentation by you and your guests especially your mum. The flow was well scripted and covered a lot of territory. It was interesting hearing some of your early history which I did not know before. Mum's input really helped to put things in perspective and clearly she has played a major part in your career to date. You are very lucky to have that level of support. I had gathered this before during off line conversations with her. Look forward to future sessions in this series.

Cormac when you were saying your three favorite songs I was hoping you would say the "Sleepsong" 😅 because Mum and you know how much I love that song but you know actually as I've said before every song on that CD i love. I just hope that little review that I did on the CD got some people's attention to get the CD cuz it's just so beautiful you know. And yes it's still in my CD player😂. Anyway it was great hearing you both and I'll be waiting for part two. All the best then. Your friend from Arizona.....Kregg

    It is very brave of you to discuss this process which is extremely personal. The changing voice is something every male has to face with varying degrees of effect. You are very lucky to have such wonderful parents and other support. Your treble voice was amazing but your new voice is hitting new highs and I am sure there is still even more improvement, and a wonderful future as a singer if you keep to your path. As a person of 70, one of the things that impresses me most, apart from your voice, is your lack of 'ego' and honesty in life (which illustrates good parenting) which comes across in your singing which makes you a very likeable personality. This is a really interesting podcast and look forward to many more. Wishing you every success in the future.

    I absolutely love this boy and his voice and the wonderful job his parents are doing looking after him on his singing journey .Such a joy to watch and hear him talk about what it means to him. If it's not about him it's just a commercial venture and some adults would exploit such a talent. Everyone has Cormac front and centre and he is safe to just be the singer he wants to be.

    I love your voice and am enjoying following your development and journey. I’m wondering, from your Mom’s perspective, if your Mom had to go through a bit of a grieving process as she had to say goodbye to that beautiful treble voice that she knew at some point, she’d never hear live again. As a mother of 5 grown sons, there are days I miss those little boys very much, even though I was excited to see who they were becoming as men. Maybe I didn’t feel it as much as we were going through it, but now, looking back, I miss them. Your first podcast was very interesting. Thank you.

    • @CormacThompson
      @CormacThompson  2 месяца назад +1

      Hello, I wouldn't say a grieving process as such, we were always very pragmatic that it was not going to last forever and when the time came and it did start changing were it was clear there was no going back, Cormac was actually very ready to move on too, so yes when we listen back now to songs recorded in his younger voice that is definitely very nostalgic for us all but i think because his new voice is settling so well that did make it easier. As for missing the little boy who was never quite as 'interesting!' as the teenager he became .... I think it is fair to say I'm looking forward to 2027 when Cormac will a different person again 😅😅 and I could never have done this 5 times ....... I salute you 🌞🌞😎😎

    This was absolutely fascinating from beginning to end and I’m looking forward to future episodes.
    I think the voice change is something which _is_ talked about-certainly by fans-but often in hushed tones. I suppose I’ve been a treble fan since 2005, when I came across the chorister trio The Choirboys, and I remember Ben Inman’s changing voice and the announcement on their official online forum of his forthcoming retirement as a chorister at Southwell Minster being a BIG deal. (And the comments about a chorister’s last service brought back fond memories of my attending Ben’s final evensong.)
    The discussion about traditionally boys disappearing for a few years after their treble life ends was interesting, and that certainly often seems to be the case at the more ‘classical’ end of things, but in the ‘pop’ world, boys often do sing right through the voice change-because if they disappear from sight for more than a few weeks their growing fandom dissolves and moves on, so they pretty much have to keep going.
    It was also nice hearing Cormac describe himself as stubborn and always wanting to do things his own way. Because that’s so relatable… 😂

    What an excellent insight into your development as a young treble singer and progression of your changing voice as you added year's. As you say many treble choristers just give up and then sometimes reappear year's latter like Aled Jones. But, you have stayed on the rollercoaster and are riding the highs and lows signposting the passing stages for others to follow. This podcast should be required listening for all treble choristers who see a way forward and not a cliff edge to their singing. Looking forward to next installment from the Team and you. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🌍🤗

    The one point I'd like to make, is it would be nice if the podcast is visual. (We couldn't see the book, or I think it is the second CD.) It would be nice to see things when they are mentioned. Ofcourse it does not mean, that the video shows your actual location or something like that, as your privacy needs to be respected. Just that not seeing the things mentioned, like the book or the CD is just something that is a missed opportunity, imho.
    Let me also ask you a question. I know the term breaking voice might not be the best, but for lack of a better term (on my part that is), I will use it in my question. It is common that people while talking and singing have this like jump from high to low. Unintentionally as it might be, it tends to happen. Does this happen while you are singing, or recording a song, that all of a sudden your voice changes ??? (And you are like ohh cr** not now :D )

    • @CormacThompson
      @CormacThompson  3 месяца назад +3

      Hello, thank you for this. It would indeed be great for video footage and we do of course have this which is why we said it like we did and initially we did hope to share full video footage too. Unfortunately though, what we didn't realise is that you cannot post video content with a podcast on RUclips because a podcast is always meant to be audio only.
      We can post the video itself as a normal RUclips video but it is extra cost to also edit this so that it works well as a stand alone video and we really wanted to keep it as a podcast so as not to confuse Cormac's RUclips channel with a very long video as well. The CD that is mentioned is listed on Cormac's RUclips channel and it is also on his website so it can be seen just not via the podcast, I'm sorry but I hope that helps explain - Alison (Cormac's mum)

    • @CormacThompson
      @CormacThompson  3 месяца назад +2

      the term we use is a changing voice as that is what it is doing, it is changing from a young higher voice that can reach very high notes to an older lower voice that sings lower notes and yes it cracks all the time especially in the earlier stages of when your voice is changing. When it fully 'breaks' or changes though to when then those higher notes can no longer be sung at all is different for every single boy

    • @FacelessJanus
      @FacelessJanus 3 месяца назад

      @@CormacThompson I agree with the term changing voice, but the question I had, was does it at times "crack" or "change" while singing or recording. As when voices change, at least during that time period, it tends to happen that your voice cracks/changes at moments that you do not like it. Sort of like having the hiccups when you are drinking tea or something. (I know not the greatest example but...)

    • @CormacThompson
      @CormacThompson  3 месяца назад +2

      @@FacelessJanus hello again, yes, as i said, it cracks all the time when you are singing, it can also crack when you are recording but at the stage when it cracks all the time it would not be wise to be recording during that stage anyway becasue it would put too much strain on your voice. in the podcast we talk about when i recorded at the royal albert hall had i had to do that a week later i could not have done it because my range would have been so impacted by the stage my voice was at in the changing phase that it would have been impossible for me to sing the song without my voice cracking on the top notes
