Look at what happened in Tenerife - they didn't have the technology we have in Heathrow today and overlapping radio calls cost the lives 583 people. The chaos that can be caused by not having the working technology to be assured of where every plane is and what it's doing is massive.

      I spent 30 hours there before finally flying out. Many people went crazy. The shouting was constant. I didn't. As the hours passed, I enjoyed a lovely meal and sought out a place to sleep. The disabled section saved me. There were many unoccupied wheelchairs and blankets. I slept really well and had a lovely breakfast. I bought a book and read it in the waiting area. I got on a flight that night and arrived at my destination in good spirits.

    Just curious, doesn’t the wheels-up departure create wake turbulence for any aircraft that is cleared off if it’s a small one ? Like B777 departing after A380 or A320 departing post A380 or B787?

    • @DodInTheSky
      @DodInTheSky Год назад +1

      All airliners are classified as “Large”. There needs to be a min. of 3 minutes separation between a large plane and a small or a medium one. I believe there is 1-2 min separation between large planes as well. On airports like Heathrow it’s achieved through the use of multiple runways. Though isn’t always possible since larger planes like a fully loaded A380 create turbulence so strong, wide and persistent that it affects planes departing on parallel runways as well.

    • @michaelday2583
      @michaelday2583 Год назад +6

      @@DodInTheSky Not quite. A380 is classed as a 'super', twin-aisled airliners (eg. 747, 787, 777, A350) are classed as 'heavy' and single-ailsed (eg A320, 737) are 'medium'. Medium behind a heavy needs 2 minutes, heavy behind a super needs 2 minutes, medium behind a super needs 3 mins. 2 mediums doesn't need anything, nor does 2 supers.
      In addition to the above, if the departure's initial route turns the same way as the one ahead, you also need 2 mins spacing. At Heathrow they shuffle the departure order taking into account the pairs of aircraft wake turbulance category and turn after departure to get the most efficient amount airborne in the least amount of time.
      They also only use one runway for departures and one for arrivals (only 2 runways) and they are far enough apart that the wake turbulance from one doesn't affect the other.

    • @ying20000818
      @ying20000818 Год назад

      @@DodInTheSky um, that's not true. Something like a twin otter is under "light", A320 is "medium", B777 is "heavy" and A380 is "super".
      As for seperation on the same, intersecting or parallel runways that are too close, it's at least 2 minutes and can be upto 4 minutes for a light following a super (and it does happen, see EGPF with GA/Twotter and A380).
      Of course, if we're talking about approaches then it changes to distance instead of timing. A light following a super requires 8nmi of spacing and it goes downward from there.
