3 years later... Thumbs up Davin. I'm redoing my whole system and was looking for info on accessing tweeters / removing the door panel. FWIW, and for people seeing this in the future... At least with the Harman Kardon system, the stock amp in the trunk has the crossovers. You can purchase component speakers for the footwell / door tweeters either like yours (and have to get the wiring between the door and the footwell) or with a separate crossover that can be installed anywhere. Since I am replacing my factory amp and trying to use all existing wiring, I am buying component speakers with the separate crossover that will just stay in the trunk near the amp and output to [one of] the existing midrange/high speaker wire and existing woofer speakerwire.
Thanks, Davin, for showing how to do the install. I finally decided to upgrade my HU to BT . I got a great deal during Prime days. I picked up an open box JVC w/ cd, bt from Crutchfield and they included the wiring harness and antenna adapter for free. Total price under $100 ... Much improved sound compared to stock HU
Hello Davin~ Thanks for a very comprehensive video on this topic. I agree that the audio system in the early Z3 models is inferior; maybe the quality improved with the 00+ Z4s? I was most impressed by the holes you cut for the added speakers behind the seats. I recently picked up a '97 Z3. My car already has two speakers in that location (looks like 2.5"-2.75"). I plan to replace all the speakers as well as the media unit (HU). What were the speaker sizes in the doors? Also, would a pin-out schematic or wiring diagram/table of the connector on the rear of the OEM head unit exist? This would be tremendously-helpful info. to source a replacement Plug 'n Play HU. 3+ years on ... Subscribed! Thanks.
great video brother i just bought alpine front 6 inch middle 250 watts and new head unit for my 99 M roadster men i cant wait to install right now its getting the wheels powder coated diamond Black
Can you please show how to take it out?!?! I have one installed and ive been trying to get it out to upgrade it but im afraid of just pulling super hard haha
I have a 2001 Z3 and the sound system is crap. I got a new sub and I’m building a box for it. I will change the player to something new but wonder if I will need an amp for the sub
Dude.... geez.. I don't know where to begin... Ok, look, you obviously like your car. Why in God's earth would you keep it so dirty, filthy, dusty and without a hint of plastic protectant or leather protectant ANYWHERE, have you any idea how easy it is to clean and restore a car today with today's products? there is a million posting on RUclips, watch a few and take care of your car for Pete's Sake!

I replaced the OEM radio with a JVC with multiple illumination colors, so I could set it to Orange.
I just gotta red Z3 like two weeks ago wow🙌🏽
Can’t seem to connect to the Bluetooth tho the radio works great prior owner upgraded it.
Great job on the video very informative thanks for posting it
Thanks for the in depth video 👍🏽
What size are the front speakers?
How did you connect the phone mic?
Im just put in some Polk audio speakers all around my Z. Still distorting like crazy. Im guessing the the stereo unit is no good
Can you please show how to take it out?!?! I have one installed and ive been trying to get it out to upgrade it but im afraid of just pulling super hard haha
the main unit not the head

I would if I was running a sub.
Any video removing the drivers speaker. Looks harder with the hood latch.
There is screw in the latch. Remove it and the arm slides off.
@@davinsrandom3142 Thank you, seen the screw, but didn't know if it was more complex than that.
Great video thank you for showing
1997 stereo that's pure shit back in the day it was fantastic
How did you deal with the original security code? Just concerned the system could lock you out.
Unplugging it with the ignition on is suppose to work but I still have the code in my owners manual.
Awesome seat covers!!!
Best $18 I ever spent lol!
Yeah, so I skipped through the video just so I could see the seat covers....lol.... you got me.
Same question about the amp - did you bypass it at the end or it worked with the amp?
I bypassed it and pretty much the whole system.
Did you wire it through the original amp?
I bypassed it.
for the love of God why does nobody show how to do the driver's side kick panel? even Crutchfiled chickened out. the hood pull is integrated into it.

I bet you’re real fun at parties…
How did you replace the speaker on the driver side?
I did the exact same thing as the passenger side.
