I made my own dress as well, 33 years ago, it cost $100 with gorgeous lace and duchess satin. This is delightful to allow us a peek into your process.

$100 for the whole dress?!? Wow! I'll have to work with duchess satin one day, it looks sumptuous 😊 Congratulations and I'm glad you enjoy watching the process of mine!

I'm starting the process of making my own dress (wedding is summer 2026) so I'm thinking about shape / style, fabrics and budget right now. This was so lovely to watch, and I'm off to binge the rest of the series.

Thank you for sharing all the details about the making of your wedding dress, it was all very interesting. Although for me it is at the high side of prices, I don’t think the total budget is too much as there are wedding dresses around that price in shops and ones that are above 2000€! I’d say it’s quite a normal price for a wedding dress + the great satisfaction of making it yourself!

Thank you! I'm glad you appreciated the break down of how much I spent as well 😊

It's absolutely inevitable that you'll have to learn this as you go along with a completely different type of sewing project. It's a bit painful to be so aware of the monetary cost of the missteps, but as long as you don't focus on it too much, in a few years you'll likely barely remember. All you'll think of when you recall your wedding dress is how beautiful it was and how proud you are of yourself. (Speaking from experience, not of making a wedding dress, but of stupid and costly mistakes I've made in the past, which were so painful and the time and now just a blip.)
But it is a great tip for any prospective brides to budget for some trial and error, so thanks for sharing that lesson.
I'm enjoying this series so much!
Question for you: Has this experience given you a taste for sewing with more luxurious materials for more every day garments?

Thank you so much for your comment! You're right, the intense disappointment and frustration that I felt when I first made the mistakes (and realized the cost) has already subsided to just a slightly uncomfortable thought, and eventually I'm sure it'll be a distant memory!
I'm so glad you're enjoying this series and thank you for letting me know! The perfect motivation to finish the next part before I go off on summer vacation 😊
As to your question, I wouldn't say this project has made me want to work with luxury fabrics like silk more often in my everyday wardrobe, but I have been leaning towards working with similarly good-quality natural fibers like wool and linen in the last year or so. That said, this project has somewhat demystified the pattern-making process and I might freestyle a creation in the future!

The Minerva swatches are great! I never get swatches because I don't think you get enough information from a square (drape)

Yes, they're very helpful! I also don't usually for the same reason, unless it's a difficult color (like grey or beige) to discern accurately online, or a fabric (like tulle) that I've never worked with before!
