Dental cleaning costs me $10 USD and a cavity cost $25 in USD. We are helping a young lady to get braces - and the cost is about $250 plus monthly adjustments of $20/month. So this is one way to compare prices. Meals cost us $10 for 2 persons, because we don't over eat and drink tap water that is safe. And the food here at restaurants is great! So living here can be costly but doesn't need to be.
Like Jerry says, your mileage can vary. What I have experienced is that when visiting or living in a developing country is that by default Americans, Europeans, Japanese etc your considered rich. Thus you will pay more for most services and goods, especially if you live in a exclusive neighborhood/compound, drive a expensive car and or have expensive cloths / accessories. Period. Now if you dont flaunt your money and change your attitude by humble yourself a little bit, develop relationships with the locals, learn how to live like a local, then your cost of living will be dramatically lower. With the exception of what the government requires for you to pay.

Thanks Jerry and Lori for providing this info. I am little bit surprised too of these costs. Bit more than what I was spending in HCMC last year. For me in usd $: Rent for a studio was 350. which included power, gas was about 12. and internet 28.00, cell phone about 15. but used it quite often for business. Now food, eating out can be expensive if im having a business lunch or dinner easily 30 to 40 plus. for 2. But if I eat at home and buy in the local markets I could get by easily on 2.00 a day. But going to MegaMart/Metro getting imported foods averaged about 25. to 35. a trip. I dont have expensive prescriptions but still about 20.00 a month. So I could easily manage on a #1100.00 monthly budget their. So Im hoping that I can come close to that in Mexico. Living on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. I would think you could live cheaper in retirement than working at a job, like I was in Vietnam. Here in the US I average about 120. a month for food, and maybe order out 2 or 3 times a month. Dont feel safe eating in restaurants yet. So if a person cooked and eat at home, buying in local markets, living mostly on fresh vegetables and fruit and meat about 3 times a week, do you think you could get by on $3 per day?
I want to purchase a home in Chapala. Should I wait to see what happens this winter? Should I wait to see if snowbirds will go this year despite the virus? Thank you.

Hi. Your videos are very informative. I have a few questions. What's the need for the private mail service and what does it include? Also, what needs to be done to have your money from the U.S. available in Mexico to pay for expenses? Thanks in advance!
The private mail service allows us to have all of our mail from the United States brought down to Ajijic. The Mexican mail service run by the government is not reliable, slow, things can get lost and many times they are lost or stolen. Typically everybody uses a private mail service here. As an example I had my $1200 that I received from the stimulus package the government of the United States gave us and I would never send that down by using a Mexico government run mail. Best to land in Guadalajara, Jalisco. You need to check which companies fly directly to Guadalajara from Texas. You might need to fly to Houston or Dallas to take a direct flight. Volaris, Aeromexico, Delta, Alaska all fly internationally to Mexico.

Actually gardening and maid service, personal services etc. is very negotiable in Mexico, as in most developing countries. Just depends on how generous you want to be or dont want to be.
I wish you would just use pesos instead USD. Doing it that way people, can convert to the currency of their own country and have a better understanding of the cost. This is Mexico after all.
