I was an exchange student to Guadalajara in high school. My exchange student family who I am still in touch with, have suggested this area for my retirement as I asked them to suggest an area near them. They currently live in Zapopan, Guadalajara. I will need to find a pet friendly rental, and advice for pet transportation as I prefer to drive them to Ajijic. I will certainly use the Mexico Relocation Guide for the resources I seek.

    My wife and I are here now, looking at properties and are fairly fluent in Spanish.
    I would like to say to anyone reading this to be aware. This is not Canada or the US. This is Mexico and all of the people in and around Lake Chapala speak Spanish. Yes, the odd place might have someone that can understand and speak a little English...but don't depend or expect that while here you are going to do just fine only speaking English. The locals down here are very friendly and eager to help, but they can only do so much to bridge the language barrier.

    Watching this from West Virginia in the upper most part of what they call the Northern Panhandle. I found this video to be very interesting because no matter where I look inside of Mexico, Lake Chapala and Ajijic are the places I always come back to. The Mexico Peso equivalent to our monthly income would be approximately 85,000 pesos. So to pay about 20-25,000 pesos each month for rent might be doable, in the hope of getting something considered 'nice'. Otherwise, something on the outskirts may do. I would love to book a stay for about a month as suggested, but right now it seems like only a pipe-dream as nothing I say can convince the wife. I keep trying though. Thank you for the information you provide.

      @@allwheeldrive That would pose as a good idea, except my wife would encourage that and say: "Don't come back!" Years ago the man chose the place of domicile, as long as he can prove that there was no loss about the quality of life. If the wife refused, that would be grounds for divorce. Hmm, have to check into that. LOL.

When my parents were "snowbirding" in Progreso, Yucatan, they noticed that most Canadians stayed together on the east (toward Chicxulub Puerto) side, and many Americans stayed on the west side of the pier. Tucson. I have been there before and feel your description is accurate. I was actually thinking it would be more like lake tahoe and so was sad to see and smell the lake there. Does the lake still give off an odor. I used to study dying lakes and it seems to me this lake might be in end-stage if something is not done about it. Also is it possible to live nearby where rents are cheaper and drive there when wanting to buy certain things?

      @MexicoRelocationGuide  Год назад +1

      Hi Scott- The lake pollution comes and goes and no the smell doesn't happen year round. Yes, you can easily live nearby and drive to Ajijic for events, restaurants, groceries or to visit friends. Many people do that and save a lot on their housing

      @@MexicoRelocationGuide ThanksThanks. my slum lord is trying to kick me out because I ask him to fix things. My current income from the va retirement is $1336 a month and I am happy here, even when I have no money. but I am getting tired of the stupidity in America. I am a disabled vet, will there be any problems living on that income or getting around in Mexico when I can't quite stand up because of a bad hip? I have already had the hip replaced and it's getting better.

      It’s a shallow lake- it won’t look crystalline. But it’s also not the cleanest lake.

    Dry good explanation. I worry about laundry, church, beauty shop, nails & pedicure. ?? Open air places to buy food. ? Can a portable a/c be used in a rental? Just plug in type? Easy access to buses to take you to larger towns to Soecial type Dr. for special disease. Lung doctor. 😊🙏🏼

      Laundry, beauty shop, nail salons, are all available in Ajijic. There are also mercados (open air markets). Easy access to buses, and public transport.
      And air conditioning is not common but can be installed if you absolutely need it and your landlord is ok with it.

    From Florida. Lived in Ajijic for 3 years, went to Mazatlan and didn't like it. Moved back to South FL 6 months ago and much prefer Mexico. Moving back to Ajijic on July. I have Blue Cross so have decent care down there. Never heard of Sky Gym.....classes at the Lake Chapala Society are free if you are a member. Just saying.

    I have seen comments several times about the odor when you are near Lake Chapala, can anyone comment or confirm this?? I am hoping it is mostly people being negative (jealous lol) about it or maybe just a short timeframe?? THANKS

      Perhaps Ajijic isn’t the place- rentals tend to be competitive and priced higher than other places because there is a lot of demand. But go to Jocotepec or Chapala and it’s far better
