@@JCTravelStories That project really brings me to a whole 'nuther level of appreciation of you, Jerry. I also designed and built my own home. And by design, I mean from scratch, not modding someone else's plan. And by built, I mean it was me and a couple guys I hired to help, not hiring some contractor. I also did my own electrical, plumbing, HVAC, kitchen and bath cabs, etc. Still doing stuff 25 years later. So I really appreciate what you've done and that you presented it. I commented before about liking your house, this takes that up an order of magnitude. Bendiciones amigo!
@Brian Mino I lived in Santiago, Chile for three years. I was working and not a retiree but it was a great place (except the smog in Santiago). Some things to keep in mind is that its a very long flight back to the US/Canada and the local food will seem very bland in comparison to Mexico, although the selection of fruits and vegetables is awesome. Chilean Spanish is a bit harder to understand at first than pretty much any other variety of Spanish. A huge proportion of the population is concentrated in the capital so it's probably easier to find places where you can get away from it all in Chile and because the country is so long there's a huge variety of climates you could choose from. You could live in a hot desert climate in the north or something resembling Washington State or even Alaska in the south and everything in between. There's no humid jungle type areas like you might find in the Yucatan though. My personal opinion is that Chile is a great destination if you want to get away from it all. It's so depopulated outside of the capital. I think that Mexico would be a better destination if you're a foodie and want to try to integrate yourself with the local community. Mexico also has a lot of charming indigenous culture in places like Oaxaca and Chile really does not have that at all.
That’s exactly what my family members say about the houses in the USA. On one hand it easier to handle repairs and renovations with wood frame homes however, you get one spark and the whole house goes up inflames. On the other hand the homes in Mexico are built very well and strong- however it’s somewhat harder when it comes to plumbing, electrical and some other minor preferences.
You have created a masterpiece! The red bathroom is glorious. There’s a lot to be said for Mexican ingenuity. I have a Mexican employee who I call on to do what everyone else says is impossible. He always comes through. Wonderful videos, thanks for the ride.

I didn’t know what to make of this video, or your sanity for that matter, at the outset. Was this going to be a money pit or something? The cool thing about structures in Mexico is that they are some of the most colorful in the world. This one is no exception. You saved a small fortune doing some of the work yourself. Your home has to be one of the most unusual I have ever seen. I love how you embraced the culture and building styles of Mexico. I’m pretty sure there’s no other home like this in the world. Beautiful home, to me look like a mision or monasterio, very very pretty, love the arches, very spanish influenced, and your gardens!!! 😍🙄🤗, I missed those, in Mex. its a "must have" for housewives 😍. And the "ingenio mexicano", we find one way or the other to make things work in a very inexpensive way possible 😁😁, (the roof issue, bcuz I bet was not a problem for the workers). Its good to see you are very adapted and don't carry any prejudices or snob feelings. You will find good and bad ppl, in any place
Además, el gobierno no está molestando con cada detalle como tiene que hacer al gusto de ellos. Allá uno hace como uno quiere y es su propia responsabilidad. Que viva!
Bravo!!!! Patients are definitely something I've learned over the years when it comes to construction. I've done 2 rehabs in an old barbershop turned beauty shop, then an apartment added on which I then lived in for many years. I swore I would never live under construction again, but guess what? I married a carpenter! Haha! That joke was on me! Honestly, I REALLY don't want to live under construction ever again, and if I have any say so, I won't! I do so appreciate the hard work you lovingly put into your beautiful home. It turned out magnificently! I imagine you both enjoy living in this home beyond words. Inside and out are breathtaking!

You are very well loved in Ajijic, Mexico, you have respect for all people and you appreciate what fine work they do. Good Job on your house. It is beautiful.
I went North to Idaho when you went South to Mexico. My rehab only took 10 months due to no issues with gaining title to the property. I added 3 greenhouses and two chicken coops made from repurposed lumber from old barn and a couple hundred tempered plate glass sheets salvaged from a apartment complex that was getting new dual pane doors and windows at the tax payers expense for HUD housing. I had kid selling me sliding glass door panels, and warranty replacement windows for $5-10 a pop. The interesting aspect was architechurally designing and framing the structures to utilize the variety of sizes materials in a visually pleasing design...oh big advantage...Idaho Falls allows citizens to salvage wood, and firewood from Thier landfill. It was Thanksgiving when a cabinet shop dropped a truck load off, or the railroad dumped a few thousand railroad ties. Lol

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm in the process of building a house and rebuilding what I bought. One of the things that was bad is that the bond beam above the doors and block walls is too short. So I bought a cement cutting Stihl saw and a diamond disk and cut the bond beams then chiseled out a place to put a 6 inch perling then welded it into the existing rebar and poured a new bond beam so I don't bust my head walking from to another.
