      In Texas, Veterans who have disability ratings, have reductions in their property taxes. Veterans with a 100 percent rating do not pay taxes on their homesteads. There are also reductions for homesteads and being over 65.

    Thats my plan to retire in México too , you're absolutely right in regards of the country social class , there's plenty of room for any social class to adapt in México , in regards of delinquency I been assaulted 3 times here in Texas something that I never experienced in México, long story short I want my descendants to learn more about my culture , principles and about our beautiful history and to leave in peace without being discriminated.

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +22

      That one idea ... that it would be possible to live without discrimination is the most important thing you could pass on. I fear that too many places in the world no longer offer that as a possibility. Mexico and Mexicans still seem very willing to be the melting pot of the world. I believe it will serve the future of Mexico well to be a place that welcomes diversity.

    Thanks so much for having having the courage to discuss such a serious topic that addresses so many of my concerns that many youtube RV folks/folks in general don't seem to address or have appropriate answers for me anyways...probably because so many of them are young enough to be a grandkid lol. I do have a couple of questions and forgive me if you have covered them already, or prefer not to address because of mean people:
    #1: Do you recommend getting a temporary visa or a permanent (resident) visa for Mexico?
    #2, Do you keep your Medicare going or not? As a independent female and retired RN....but not wealthy by any means, my really only fear in life has always been to be in a nursing home where I am restricted on simple things.. such as what I like to eat, am I warm enough, and being at the mercy of a kind, compassionate peoples, or... someone who hates their job and had a bad night the night before coming to work at a job they dislike? (institution help is a very mixed bag these days in the US) I do not have the funds for in home care here, maybe not in Mexico either. But...having lived in Az for 3 yrs, I have seen the love the Mexican people have for family and others in general, and their hard working ethics. (though I am still getting used to manana) Over all, I think they got it right in life, and would trust them to to care for me. Thank you for everything you do. I consider you a sort of guru for this ole lady, as I am sure others following you that is in my shoes :) Happy belated birthday, to both you and your wife. I love your stories.

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +14

      You can come and go in Mexico on a tourist visa 180 days at a time. You can get a temporay residence visa for up to 4 years, and/or you can get a permanent residence visa. My recommendation is always to try it out first as a traveler ... you can figure out if its for you in 180 days. Also, the temporal and permanente residence visas have financial requirements and cost money to get, too. We keep our medicare and a supplement because we travel in the US and our Mexican insurance does not cover us outside of Mexico. Given what I've been told, and what I've witnessed, I would much prefer to be taken care of by a Mexican nurse than a US nursing home nurse. I guess you could run into the mixed bag of care anywhere, but I'd think it less likely in Mexico. In all of healthcare, Mexico still seems to be about patient needs and not about insurance regs and corporate profitability.

    I know that it is not your topic of choice, but you might consider mentioning in a video sometime...
    the benefits of "minimalism" (aka: living below one's means) BEFORE retirement, as being helpful for insuring that one will actually be able to retire. Most people spend their next paycheck before payday arrives, and a Savings Account is a "bad word". 🙂

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +5

      I did a 30 minute video of that nearly 3 years ago and never posted it. Its still on a hard drive somewhere. In reviewing it I decided it seemed ingenuous to declare myself a believer in minimalism while sitting in a lake front house with 5 bathrooms. In my heart I am in fact a van dweller, a minimalist, and happier in my motor home than in my hacienda. Maybe I'll dig that video out. Might be time it sees the light of day and I let it slip who I really am in spirit.

    • @jacklong7048
      @jacklong7048 6 лет назад +1

      Their are plenty of videos on you tube about minimalism. But like anything else, the audience has to be listening. The holidays approach and how many will overspend? But the idea of cutting back, no way. Or figuring out what is a need and what is a want. They blame everyone but themselves. Need the most expensive tv, phone or car? You can do it and sleep easier at night not worrying about some debt.

      @@JCTravelStories,
      Yeah, I get it.
      Moreover, I live it. I have learned via the "old school" method, to manage our money wisely, to be happy with what we have (as opposed to always wanting future items, as seems to be the current social trend) and to invest in things that cause our savings to grow. I think it is sad to see so many retired people today, who's lifestyle is determined by Social Security benefits, and charactorized by "forced" penny-pinching, because their financial education started after their retirements began.
      You are in a position to offer some learned wisdom, along with your usual content. Just a dab here and there perhaps, to see what kind of feedback you get.
      Feel free to use the third party approach..
      "Marshall, from MD USA, writes to ask for some helpful tips on how to save for retirement, so that he and his wife will be able to retire comfortably in Mexico one day."

      I am a very good judge of character, and you, sir, are one with a heart to help others, and a mind capable of doing so without offending your audience.

    This is a video that is SO VALUABLE! Fortunately or unfortunately if a person gets Alzheimer's Driving is one of the LAST things to go! It's sort of an automatic thing that said quick reactions might not be... my mother was still driving quite a bit in the beginning of her dementia, but would return from te store with scratches and dents on her car that she couldn't explain... anyways I think you have a terrific brain and longevity is on your side if you follow your mom's path. Love MEXICO ... its a great place!!

    The hardest thing I ever had to do was tell my mom she shouldn’t drive anymore. It’s a huge feeling of independence for the elderly but sometimes it is necessary. It truly broke her heart because she felt like she was going to become a burden on everyone. It’s been three years and she’s ok with it now. Fortunately we are able to have an adult companion come out three days a week and take her to the store, doctor, bank, etc. Someday my kids will have to make that decision for me.

    I liked this video very much, thanks. Your words of wisdom on how Mexicans still have that family oriented living remind me of how my island was. Puerto Rico used to be like that and in some cities it still is. The metro area is very different. No one knows or cares about anyone. It’s a race to see who has the largest most expensive house, car, boat...etc. In many way like the US.

    My wife and I live a minimalist lifestyle.
    My wife was raised in a household containing her Amish
    Great Grandmother and her Grandmother.
    Growing up like this taught her to be very frugal, she cans
    everything, bakes like a fiend, and never minds jumping right in
    and getting her hands dirty...!
    I’m a disabled Veteran and thank God every day for my wife and the
    way she is...!
    Attempting to live off of what I receive from Social Security Disability
    is an undoing challenge and we would never be able to do so without
    her.
    What we would like to find is some farm land where we could grow much
    of our own food, as we do now, also, land to raise some animals, basically
    we’re looking for a small farm.
    Is this possible...?
    Are there such places available that we could afford...?
    Would you mind suggesting some areas to research...?
    I also have another question, should we be concerned about
    Volcanoes, Earthquakes, or any other Natural Disasters...?
    Thank you so much for your wisdom, knowledge, and help
    that you provide so many of us...!!!
    I enjoy learning and watching the videos being produced by
    many of the young couples who seem to be taking Mexico by storm,
    But...
    I have to admit that I find myself turning towards your channel to get
    the answers that I seek from someone who is on the front line, and has
    gained years of experience through good ole trial and error...!
    Thank you again for all that you do.

      I would think that having three planting per year in vegetable gardens as we do around Lake Chapala would work well for you to grow much of your own food. Any of the fringe areas near the larger communities might have properties that would work. Google this mag ... Point South Chapala Edition. Pics and prices of many realty offices. Earthquakes .... Had one 4.5 about 6 years ago about 100 miles away. Water sloshed out of the pool. No damage.

    I am a subscriber but cannot claim I have watched all of your videos. However, for me, this one clearly ranks near the top in the sense of the topic(s) covered and the "manner" of coverage. I really like the polite and deft, yet honest, coverage of the realities as well as how frankly you assess your own situation and preferences. The way you walk the thin line on commenting realistically/politely on what is going on in these (once great) states, like "a word to the wise," makes me your fan, if not an outright devotee!!
    I have a question on the US retiree geographical distribution pattern. Roughly, it seems a great majority of retirees live in about a 100-mile wide virtually straight band joining Puerto Vallarta and Veracruz on the two coasts. Is my impression correct? If so, why is there such a pattern? Why are the states to the north, along the US border, not popular? Thanks.

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +8

      I don't know if your geographical distribution map is correct. I've never seen that. I don't think it is. There are many expats in Baja, Cancun, and Oaxaca. Maybe there are many more in the band you indicate because of the tribal effect. Those areas got popular and known and grew in expat population because of their well known attractions. As far as norther areas being less attractive ... too much like living in the lower class areas of the US. Strip malls and attitudes. Its a different vibe farther south. Just opinions off the top of my head ... not facts.

While I relish you suggestion for a shorter/comment, I have a certain handicap in the sense that English is my second language and I do not know/use most informal terms/expressions! Further, I try to comment in a manner as polished as the speech JC resorts to in his videos!!

    Minimalism appeals after a lifetime and a double garage of STUFF!

      Most people I know can't even park their car in their double garage for all the crap they have accumulated over the years. I have a garage sale once a year for anything I haven't used in the past year. Anything not sold gets donated to Salvation Army. It's a win / win

      The feeling after that big garage sale with a sign in the street in 2002 that said, "Buy this crap, I'm moving to Mexico." was the most feeling of freedom I've ever experienced.

    Since you have been spreading the word about how good it is down there, I can't afford to come, good going Jerry. I was going to get a spot next door to you, but now that dream is gone!

      Oh come on, J.C. isn't that big an influence--yet. He only has what? 2,000 viewers? No..now 3.2.
      The drug trade will continue to be the biggest economic factor and repel most people. As long as we buy it they'll bring it.
