    I remember when I first came to Mexico I was having a problem with the medication I was prescribed for my high blood pressure. I went to a local Doctor in Puerto Vallarta to see what could be done. The doctor gave me a new prescription but wanted to monitor me the next day, which was Sunday. Of course I pointed out the fact that they were closed, so the Doctor took me to the doorway of his office, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "see that yellow house down the street there? Just come by there after Church tomorrow and I will check your blood pressure" I was dumbfounded. He was so nice and wanted to make sure I was OK. Oh and by the way, I think the office visit was only about 15 dollars. Do you think you'd get that kind of service in the U.S., I don't think so.

    Colonoscopy in the US? Varies, but I was quoted about $2,500 including Anesthesiologist. (this was on the low end of a quote) If any polyps removed - you're looking at up to 5 to 6 thousand I was told. Went to Mexico - paid $450 and some non-cancerous polyps were removed - total? $450 dollars. It was another 30 for testing of the polyps.
    Healthcare in the United States is simply not practical. It is a complete joke.

      Ghosty,I've had 3 of them in the US, last one cost about $400 copay. No problems as I've been putting money away in a pretax Health Savings account for years. Need a crown but I'll wait until next year as I'm already over my limit for 2018. Here's the real ironic thing about this Here you have Mexico that appears to have a market based health care system based on OMG COST! That is how Capitalism works, you have a product or service that you can offer at a better price rather then being dictated by a Federal government. Wake up people, it's the government that drives up the cost of our health care!

    I hurt my back back in February and had an ambulance take me to the hospital because I was immobile. Doctors took a look at me and did a couple tests and just prescribed me some meds and sent me home. My bill after insurance paid a little over half was $18,000!!! I am absolutely disgusted with the healthcare industry in this country.

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +11

      ren1018 ... I genuinely hope you got some relief for your $9000 + your Insurance premiums. What I’m going to tell you is going to make you even more angry. .The Mexican constitution guarantees health care to every person physically in the country. Long story short ... A friend here as a tourist had some heart problems ... Ambulance ... Oxygen at a government hospital for a few hours ... Released. No cost. No bill. Nada.
      Happened in a small beach town named Melaque about 5 years ago. It’s another Mexican hospital system called Seguro Popular.

      We also have physicians at drugstores who can check you up, if you want, for around 1.50 dollars, and then prescribe you with drugs from therein, which also are really economic. The chain of those drugstores is called Farmacias de Similares. Some people may distrust those services, but the truth is that a lot of people go there, including me, for simplicity.

    I really don't know what is going on in the united states . I'm from México but last week i was in Tucson Arizona , i was shooping at Walmart and a lady 100% american , blue eyes , blonde hair , about 50 years old , came to me and told me , speak English , this is América . I really don't know why many americans desrepect a lot of mexicans that live in united states, but we mexicans treat you americans very well here in México

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +28

      Yes, I agree. We have always been treated with respect and welcomed not only into Mexico, but into the families of Mexican friends. It was wonderful to be born and grow up in the USA, but after living out of the country for a lot of years I am embarrassed by how some, not all Amercans think. Or don't.

    • @Navigator-u6i
      @Navigator-u6i 6 лет назад +11

      Yes. America is becoming more intolerant, disrespectful, and discriminatory towards people of dark or brown color. Only because they don't look like the majority (white). But I still believe that the majority of Americans are nice people with a great understanding of cultural differences!!!

One time my health insurance paid $2700.00 for tests at a heart center in the US. They were not able to resolve the long term issue. One Drs office visit here and problem solved, so I stayed.

    Man thank you Jerry that is exactly what I needed to show my wife why Mexico is where two old motor homers should spend at least part of the year. Hey there is a rv camp ground at the west end of the lake how about doing a review of it?

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +5

      Tapestry of God ... The RV park is Roca Azul. It's pretty plain at the campsites, but nice grounds. Lots of grass, big trees, and associated with a swimming pool and sports complex. Maybe 3 km from downtown Jocotepec. Haven't been out there for a few years. Maybe I'll go out and do a review of it in Sept just before we return to our RV as a channel transition from retired in Mexico to traveling in an RV. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Thank you for sharing this. Americans have been getting ripped off for years on prescription medicine. Also, I think the doctors in the Ajijic/Chapala area are very accommodating to the expats. It is an older crowd and things like an ear infection pop up all the time. Best to get treatment as soon as possible as I have learned the hard way!

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад

      L Green ... You are correct that doctors at Lakeside are nice to expats, but I don't think its limited to these communities with large numbers of expats. Reports from lots of places in Mexico are that health care is still about patient needs and not just about the profits. Its still a capitalistic system and change will come.

    My friend had to use the services of a doctor in Vera Cruz in January 2018. The hotel desk clerk contacted the doctor on his behalf. The doctor arrived within 30 minutes, took a medical history in passable english, did a physical exam and arranged for a cardiologist to meet him at the local emergency department. The cost for the house call to thhotel was 400 pesos ($27.26Can) which I paid in cash and for which he gave me a reciept.

    I had a similar experience. I went to the doctor here in the states to have my ears cleaned but I had quite a bit of wax so they referred me to a specialist. That took Two visits. The first he told me to use debrox, the second he said I need a specialist.
    I live real close to the border so I went over there instead. The eyeglass guy also works with ears. He Cleaned my ears for $25.
    The two visits where Nothing was done? $300 and the specialist wanted another three hundred minimum.

    I went to Mexico about 4 years ago and had some work done to my teeth. I got my teeth cleaned and had a tooth removed all for 100 dollars. My girlfriend asked how much to pull her cracked tooth. The Dentist told her to open her mouth so he could examine it. She opened her mouth and he stuck a device in it and pulled her tooth out and told her 50 dollars. :)

    At some major pharmacies, certain often prescribed antibiotics are dispensed free of charge ( penicillin, Bactrim, Amoxicillin, etc.) And even the generic for Lipitor is dispensed for free by a major grocery chain here in the Midwest. But 5 prescriptions for $69? Nearly unheard of here. Having worked in the retail pharmaceutical arena in the past, it is heartbreaking to see people come in for 90-day prescriptions totaling nearly $3,000. For many it’s food or meds or absolutely no meds at all.

    We live in El Paso, Texas. My DIL had a sinus/bronchial infection. She doesn't have insurance. We crossed the border to Cd.Juarez went to a doctor. The office visit, a penicillin injection and three prescriptions cost a total of $65.00. That would not have paid for an office visit in El Paso. The reason the cost was so high is because he prescribed a Z-Pak which in the States would be the price of all we got. An injection of penicillin at my employee clinic costs over a hundred dollars. Totally worth a half day trip.

Oxycodone is not available except in liquid form and diffictult to get. Tramadol is available. Methadone is prescribed in Mexico for chronic pain.

    This information is gold. The US media has always painted a gloomy picture of Mexico to prevent US citizens from flocking to Mexico for affordable and excellent health care. In the US, health “care” is a very profitable business. A friend of mine and I had hernia repair surgeries two weeks apart. I have insurance, he doesn’t. He offered the hospital cash for it. He paid 5000 USD. My bill was 19000 USD. After insurance payments, I was responsible for 4800 dollars. I couldn’t believe it.

Also that good ones were booked to the max. So I went to see his. She didn't listen to me and I left unsatisfied and angry. Just because a Dr. has a degree in the USA doesn't mean you shouldn't use your head when seeing them. There are good ones out there if you want to look. 🐲🐲🐲

      When I make snide remarks about the state of health care in the USA or make comparisons about the quality or cost of care in Mexico ... It's never about the Doctors. I believe that nearly all doctors start out with their idealism intact and their heart in the right place for the care of patients. There are easier ways to get rich with less competition than spending 12 years becoming a doctor. The USA problem is drug company corporate profits, the cost of malpractice insurance caused by tort law, and insurance companies dictating the extent of service. If you go to the doctor in the USA, you'll get several tests you don't need because the doctor needs to cover himself against being sued for missing something. You're tested not because the doctor thinks you need it, but because he needs to document that he checked. The insurance premiums skyrocket because a half dozen medically un-needed tests were billed and paid. The hospital or clinic is not innocent. They are the profit center between the at risk doctor and the abused insurance company, more tests more profit. Doctors find themselves caught up in a system where the needs hospitals and insurance companies rather than the needs of patients come first. We patients are left to be the turnips that bleed at the bank in premiums and copays while our health suffers a lack of coverage.

If you don't have one of these you still can go to a public or private hospital and pay the bill that is much cheaper than in the us (10 times cheaper )

    • @JCTravelStories
      @JCTravelStories  6 лет назад +3

      You are correct in some ways regarding medical insurance, but there is a big difference in the legal system. The cost of medical care in the US is driven by the threat of lawsuits for mal practice. Its harder to sue a doctor or hospital in Mexico. Its why you would get 6 tests in the States instead of one in Mexico. Not because they were more thorough in the US, but because they needed to guard against being sued for missing something.

    There is 2 things here that cause this. First is the value of the dollar as compared to other currencies. The world believes that the us is the safest place to put money so the dollar is high, that along with the us is the world reserve currency so every country has to own dollars. As far as the drug prices, the pharma lobby is so strong no one in the us gets discounted prescription. This is why people go to Mexico and Canada to buy drugs. It is probably considered smuggling to bring them back into the us. Likely a law that the drug companies had congress write to protect them.
