Here Be Barr I like hiking there at el tepalo and the spa in the town of San Juan cosala a few minutes away from ajijic. The only thing I see that’s a big negative is that the retirees have brought up the cost of rentals and real estate in the area for the locals, but I guess this is happening kinda world wide so it’s just what happens when places like these are discovered.

I am 74 and lived in San Miguel de Allende, and Tangnacicuaro, Michoacan...returned to Idaho because family thought I should be near them...I am almost convinced that I can assure my life 0f 20 more years IF I get to Ajijic!!! Ajijic es muy bonito, lleno de extranjeros a quienes sentimos como huéspedes especiales, ya que hace décadas que han elegido venir a Chapala.
My wife and I were just there last November to scout out our future retirement destination. I loved it. The owner of the place we rented was so helpful and gave us lots of information Ajijic. He himself is semi-retired there. We hope to retire there someday.
I'm from Ajijic, I understand perfectly your english, you're a great speaker, and also because the foreign comunity of american, canadian and british people founded the wilkes educational center where they teach english for free to the people in the town, that is so cool, and I am very grateful with americans and canadians because they wanna see our town on the top as we want too and they are a great factor of our economy, so I hope our town still improving, being ecologic, nice and beautiful, you have to come in the raining season, when the hills turn to a intense green and the waterfalls abound all around the rivera de chapala hills
It would seem they are more welcoming of outsiders than we are in the U.S. Thats a good thing because I would move there to get away from the sad, angry way that most Americans are acting these days.
Honestly the living style in USA sucks big time. I’m a Mexican that migrated to the USA and grew up here and I graduated high school started working in retail and let me tell you USA people are horrible! Not everyone of course but the style is you have to do everything ASAP and customer is always right. People are depressed and angry all the time and I learned that quick. I graduated from nursing school and now working with patients and to me caring and helping others has always been easy and just part of me. I never realized until today. I saw a video and a guy talked about Mexicans being family oriented and caring for the elderly. And it hit me, growing up as a Mexican in the USA, my parents were strong about the elderly and compassion toward others. We treat others like family and I never even thought about that culture way of living inside me. Anyways seeing this video everyone seems relax and the native people seem nice.
My husbands family is from Chapala, we visit there quite frequently. I was blown away at the beauty my first time and understood completely why it is such a great retirement area. Ajijic is actually pronounced Ahehe with the c being silent. The people, food and culture there is unreal. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
Ajijic is a small village on the lake of Chapala ... foreign pensioners like it a lot because of the weather, because it is a town that preserves its cobbled streets, retirees have many activities in the area since teaching children to learn English, they give them painting classes and many other things and the people of Ajijic love them very much and adopted them as their family is very beautiful! ❤️ In addition to the tranquility and feeling at home that makes Ajijic a magical place! You should know Roy Nolan is a fabulous photographer who was very famous in Hollywood and is a beautiful person !!! excellent aerial shots 👍🏻👏🏻😘
Two visits ago, I did a 3 week trip through Mexico. I traveled solo. I flew in through Guadalajara and was hosted by a very nice Professor of Veterinary Medicine. I am also a Professor in the States but in the Humanities. He hosted me for 3 days and then I traveled solo about, and returned to Guadalajara. He hosted me again for 3 days. On the second to last day, he took me as a special treat to Lake Chapala...to show me where all the Gringo Retirees are. It was a sweet gesture. We went to a bar patronized entirely by Gringo retirees. Walked a little bit around the lake area.
Yes I hear San Miguel de Allende and Ajijic Mexico are top destinations for Ex-pats.If not mistaken I think San Miguel de Allende was Ranked NO#1 place to live in Mexico this year.
You know there are many comunities of expats ans retirees all across Mexico Ajijic , San Miguel de allende, san Carlos sonora, los cabos, puerto vallarta, lo de marcos , playa del carmen, etc.
I am an American of Mexican heritage, and have witnessed the changes in Mexico over many years. The migration of retirees and others to places like Ajijic in Mexico is bittersweet to me, and has two sides. On the good side, because of the dollars going into places like Ajijic, it is very well-kept, safe, and clean. There are also improvements in homes and infrastructure there that probably would not have happened as fast or at all if it wasn't for the influx of foreigners and their money :-). On the down side though, the charm and authenticity of old Mexico is diminished (in my opinion) by subtle and not-so-subtle changes brought from the outside. Also, the worst result has been a drastic increase in the cost of real estate in these areas, which I believe is mainly the direct result of the greed of the real estate industry (there are many American real estate companies now operating in these places). This latter thing is really a concern to me, because although the prices may seem reasonable to American and Canadian people, they are completely outside the grasp of most Mexican people. :-(

HOWEVER - the latest news of the well known Jerry Brown videos about Ajijic stated that due to overexposure with videos, the town was just so overrun by interested people who were lured to $350 rents and the lowest budgets one can imagine, that all has gone up by hundreds of dollars in real estate and other services this past year. There you have it. Just like so many other towns in Mexico, i.e. san Miguel de Allende and Puerto Penasco as an example, once the gringos invade, all culture and quaintness go out the door, much faster with the internet now. Best visit on vacation before you sell all you own and leave your family and friends. Seasoned Mexico traveler!
Americans in San Carlos, Sonora in Guaymas used to be hippies as well. Anywhere else I don’t know, but I don’t really think so. In cities like Mexico DF you have Americans, but they’re business man, not hippies. Ajijic and San Carlos are full of people that moved in since the 50's.
Mexican here, never heard of this place before but I definetely have to check it out. Btw, I'm from Chihuahua so I strongly recommend you to step by. Google Barrancas del Cobre/Cooper Canyon, Cascada de Baseaseachic (highest one in México), Creel and Cañón del Pegüis so you get an idea what type of places you could see. Really a fan of your work!
Also want to mention you could take the Ch-P Train (Chihuahua-Pacific) which is the last passangers only train in México. It goes all the way from Chihuahua, Chihuahua to Los Mochis, Sinaloa and crosses the beautiful Sierra Tarahumara.

Ajijic is a very charming town. My parents are from Atotonilco el Alto which is a couple hours drive. One time I forced them to take me there because I am all about Jalisco. There is way more to Jalisco, however and obviously. What a lot of people miss out on and I've only seen Ford Quarterman so far capture on RUclips is the Los Altos region. The place is filled with beautiful women. The food is absolutely exquisite and the landscapes capture the imagination. There is Atotonilco el Alto, Tepatitlán, Arandas, Jalostotitlán and numerous other highland towns to visit. Atotonilco without a doubt is the most beautiful of all of them because it's nestled in a small valley surrounded by a C-shape ridge that is where the highlands start on the southern side and a hill on the other side. It is a colorful town with friendly people and distilleries such as Patron, Don Julio, Siete Leguas and in the highlands, Tequila Suerte. It's not uncommon for gringos to come through on day trips. It's a treat for me when I Americans in my town.
Great video! I think we live such fast and stressful life here in the State that we forget to enjoy life to it’s full potential.. we want everything fast and now that we don’t spend time to look around and enjoy our life on a day to day basis! I for one want a more relax life.
In Mexico: PRO) Your waiter is likely friendly and warm CON) He's probably going to take a few extra minutes when you ask for , "La Cuenta" then his American counterpart. But yep, slower is nicer sometimes.
I have not been to Ajijic or Lake Chapala but I would definitely go. I have seen other videos on Ajijic and new there was a fairly large ex-pat community and wasn't sure I would like it with a large number of ex-pats but after seeing your video I would like to check it out, at least for a visit.
Yes, worth a visit. I even told my (retired) parents to visit, ahhaa. I think my mom would like the community aspect there, and since she doesn't speak Spanish she could blend in.
oh and I also wanted to say, that I'm from Ajijic but my mother comes from LOS ALTOS DE JALISCO and that is a region very very interesting and full of history, beginning with the fact that the region of los altos de jalisco( the highlands of jalisco) comformed by aproximately 20 to 30 towns is the biggest producer of tequila, there is where the tequilana weber born, and also that region is known for having beautiful people, because the people from los altos, is a mix of french, spanish, portuguese and italian colonies that the spanish bring here when they found the region empty, so this region is a big mix of mexican blood, french ancestors, some italian and portuguese ancestors and of course spanish, and this region is the biggest producer of cheese, and all the primary sector products in jalisco and mexico you should visit, I feel very proud of having blood from there, one of the towns where you can find grat things i los altos is Arandas, San miguel el alto, Jesus Maria, Jalostotitlan

I loved Ajijic and the surroundings, it looks like a very Mexican place with non Mexican residents which is ok....I'm glad that Lady you interviewed is happy living in Ajijic and that the cost of living is a lot cheaper, but I will have to disagree with her on one thing....I think that doctors graduated from Mexican Universities are as good as the ones graduated from Europe or USA....is her heart or liver different from any other human being?....maybe the only difference between them would be their fluency in English....very good video Jon, thanks.

Actually Doctors in Mexico have more training than in the US or in Europe, because there they can't practice on patients, while in Mexico the students have to do everything at the school hospitals! Of course, with supervision of their teachers, but they do everything.

To each his own I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, been running around my whole life working super hard.. when I go out I don’t want the waiter bugging me every 5min or bringing the check halfway or 3/4 through my meal.. pretty much rushing us to leave, even though they say no hurry ! No thanks 😂

We’ve been Ajijic for 4 days now. The people are friendly and the lake and mountains are beautiful. I researched Ajijic for 2 months before coming on this short trip. Here are some things that surprised me though none of them are inherently bad. First, the weather has seemed warmer than I expected. I think that’s due to the high humidity, very bright sunshine, and energy required to walk uphill on cobblestone streets. Fortunately we got one of the rare Airbnb’s with air conditioning but it was out our second night here due to a thunderstorm that took out a transformer. Second, we should have planned more activities in advance. Our first full day we stayed busy looking at the small shops between Centro and the Malecon and lucked out finding a bar with awesome live music that started at 4 pm. After that day, we ran out of impromptu entertainment opportunities. For example, the nice massage and facial spa was already booked solid for the next 3 days. Third, though people are friendly here like in Texas where we’re from, making new friends was not as easy as expected. During our previous 8 meals when we were sitting in restaurants around a bunch of other westerners, no one said hi or smiled struck up conversations with us. Only when I initiated the conversation did people respond. This is the same as I’d expect in Texas but I’d heard so many raves about the friendliness in Ajijic, I had unrealistic expectations. Fourth, Uber’s are not plentiful and taxis don’t drive around looking for customers. The taxis seem to congregate in El Centro so it was necessary for us to walk 10 minutes to get a taxi. Fifth, Ajijic downtown is not as clean and organized as Playa del Carmen or Oaxaca. In retrospect, I should have expected this since it’s much smaller. I also realized once here that the property taxes here are minuscule so having thousands of foreigners live here doesn’t generate much money for the local government to make capital improvements. In conclusion, we still enjoyed Ajijic, and hope our insights help others have accurate expectations.

nice video, I have been there, in both places, and actually it's strange because some times, it depends on the situation you may feel like if u were in other countries cause there are so many people not from Mexico, in a mexican architecture town, but when you eat taquitos, birria, torta ahogada,etc, then you 're sure u are in Mexico.

You are also close to: the beautiful beaches of Jalisco (some of the best in the world), Guadalajara (Little Spain) and its people, museums, architecture, and the woods where you can rent a cabin and ride horses.
I joined a few FB pages and have gotten alot of info. Still see that you can rent a nice furnished place for 700 a month . Even if Utilities are not inc they are very reasonable . Health Care in the US has gotten beyond crazy . I can live in Mexico for what I have to pay for health insurance . How is the area in General thoughts far as things to do
how is getting packages in mexico? Say you order something online say amazon? I am a digital nomad and thinking of going down for a few months. But I always have to get packages from usa. Like mail from my po box!
So the doctors are good because they went to school in the US or europe? If a doctor went to school in mexico does it mean they're not good what's wrong with that lady

Now retired and looking at places to relocate to, I'm visiting Guadalajara and Ajijic for a month in June. But, to tell the truth, though beautiful as shown in your excellent video, Ajijic may be too small, and too gringo, for me to live in full time. But, I'll reserve my final opinion until after I see it for myself.
Here Be Barr Now that I’ve spent two weeks in Ajijic I can say my original assessment is true: it’s too small, too gringo and way overpriced. The White expats are on a mission to recreate San Diego in Mexico, at a terrible cost to the local population, who are being gentrified out of town. Among the expats the ratio of men to women is close to four to one; there’s a local AA chapter for good reason (old folks love to get their drink on) and the most popular drug in town is Viagra. Once the weekend visitors from GDL leave, it becomes deadly dull. The village literally shuts down at 9 PM. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t live there.
Gracias por este recorrido por Ajijic. The only downside I've heard is that farmers do burning twice a year, and a lot of the smoke comes down to Ajijic and Chapala. ETA that some peole believe pesticides are being overly-used...if that's a word...and may be the cause of recent kidney-related ailments.
All you have to do is go west of Chap[ala on the lake and ther are many people suffering with kidney issues. Places Like Mezcala which ia 15 minute bus ride from Chapala. Videos are great but one needs to hear both sides.
But nobody talks about the people!!! Can you imagine those canadians or gringos living there or any other part of México where they retire to if the Mexican people were hostile or racist????? NOPE, so the biggest reason for them to retire there is because they're able to live their lives without people being racist to them. Its thanks to the people they feel safe, happy they should show respect and acknowledge the people around them. Besides the costs of living... those are just perks....
They like that old world style arquitecure the weather how cheap it is to live there and the slower pace of life and that it clean and the people are friendly and helpful just like a lot of places in Mejico
USA has the technology not the best schools for doctors,the best doctors are schooled in Guadalajara,Monterrey or Cuba.These doctors are brought to Houston and other parts in the USA to perform big surgeries
indeed, it is the city with the most repatriates from the USA and Canada in Mexico. 85% of its inhabitants are from those two countries, you need to go to stone barrenada where is the restaurant area. and to the island of scorpions.

There are also improvements in homes and infrastructure there that probably would not have happened as fast or at all if it wasn't for the influx of foreigners and their money :-). On the down side though, the charm and authenticity of old Mexico is diminished (in my opinion) by subtle and not-so-subtle changes brought from the outside. Also, the worst result has been a drastic increase in the cost of real estate in these areas, which I believe is mainly the direct result of the greed of the real estate industry (there are many American real estate companies now operating in these places). This latter thing is really a concern to me, because although the prices may seem reasonable to American and Canadian people, they are completely outside the grasp of most Mexican people. :-(

HOWEVER - the latest news of the well known Jerry Brown videos about Ajijic stated that due to overexposure with videos, the town was just so overrun by interested people who were lured to $350 rents and the lowest budgets one can imagine, that all has gone up by hundreds of dollars in real estate and other services this past year.
There you have it. Just like so many other towns in Mexico, i.e. san Miguel de Allende and Puerto Penasco as an example, once the gringos invade, all culture and quaintness go out the door, much faster with the internet now.
Best visit on vacation before you sell all you own and leave your family and friends.

Americans in San Carlos, Sonora in Guaymas used to be hippies as well. Anywhere else I don’t know, but I don’t really think so. In cities like Mexico DF you have Americans, but they’re business man, not hippies. Ajijic and San Carlos are full of people that moved in since the 50's.

Mexican here, never heard of this place before but I definetely have to check it out.
Btw, I'm from Chihuahua so I strongly recommend you to step by. Google Barrancas del Cobre/Cooper Canyon, Cascada de Baseaseachic (highest one in México), Creel and Cañón del Pegüis so you get an idea what type of places you could see. Really a fan of your work!
Also want to mention you could take the Ch-P Train (Chihuahua-Pacific) which is the last passangers only train in México. It goes all the way from Chihuahua, Chihuahua to Los Mochis, Sinaloa and crosses the beautiful Sierra Tarahumara.

Ajijic is a very charming town. My parents are from Atotonilco el Alto which is a couple hours drive. One time I forced them to take me there because I am all about Jalisco.
There is way more to Jalisco, however and obviously. What a lot of people miss out on and I've only seen Ford Quarterman so far capture on RUclips is the Los Altos region. The place is filled with beautiful women. The food is absolutely exquisite and the landscapes capture the imagination.
There is Atotonilco el Alto, Tepatitlán, Arandas, Jalostotitlán and numerous other highland towns to visit. Atotonilco without a doubt is the most beautiful of all of them because it's nestled in a small valley surrounded by a C-shape ridge that is where the highlands start on the southern side and a hill on the other side.
It is a colorful town with friendly people and distilleries such as Patron, Don Julio, Siete Leguas and in the highlands, Tequila Suerte. It's not uncommon for gringos to come through on day trips. It's a treat for me when I Americans in my town.

I have not been to Ajijic or Lake Chapala but I would definitely go. I have seen other videos on Ajijic and new there was a fairly large ex-pat community and wasn't sure I would like it with a large number of ex-pats but after seeing your video I would like to check it out, at least for a visit.
Yes, worth a visit. I even told my (retired) parents to visit, ahhaa. I think my mom would like the community aspect there, and since she doesn't speak Spanish she could blend in.

oh and I also wanted to say, that I'm from Ajijic but my mother comes from LOS ALTOS DE JALISCO and that is a region very very interesting and full of history, beginning with the fact that the region of los altos de jalisco( the highlands of jalisco) comformed by aproximately 20 to 30 towns is the biggest producer of tequila, there is where the tequilana weber born, and also that region is known for having beautiful people, because the people from los altos, is a mix of french, spanish, portuguese and italian colonies that the spanish bring here when they found the region empty, so this region is a big mix of mexican blood, french ancestors, some italian and portuguese ancestors and of course spanish, and this region is the biggest producer of cheese, and all the primary sector products in jalisco and mexico you should visit, I feel very proud of having blood from there, one of the towns where you can find grat things i los altos is Arandas, San miguel el alto, Jesus Maria, Jalostotitlan

I loved Ajijic and the surroundings, it looks like a very Mexican place with non Mexican residents which is ok....I'm glad that Lady you interviewed is happy living in Ajijic and that the cost of living is a lot cheaper, but I will have to disagree with her on one thing....I think that doctors graduated from Mexican Universities are as good as the ones graduated from Europe or USA....is her heart or liver different from any other human being?....maybe the only difference between them would be their fluency in English....very good video Jon, thanks.

Actually Doctors in Mexico have more training than in the US or in Europe, because there they can't practice on patients, while in Mexico the students have to do everything at the school hospitals! Of course, with supervision of their teachers, but they do everything.

We’ve been Ajijic for 4 days now. The people are friendly and the lake and mountains are beautiful. I researched Ajijic for 2 months before coming on this short trip. Here are some things that surprised me though none of them are inherently bad. First, the weather has seemed warmer than I expected. I think that’s due to the high humidity, very bright sunshine, and energy required to walk uphill on cobblestone streets. Fortunately we got one of the rare Airbnb’s with air conditioning but it was out our second night here due to a thunderstorm that took out a transformer. Second, we should have planned more activities in advance. Our first full day we stayed busy looking at the small shops between Centro and the Malecon and lucked out finding a bar with awesome live music that started at 4 pm. After that day, we ran out of impromptu entertainment opportunities. For example, the nice massage and facial spa was already booked solid for the next 3 days. Third, though people are friendly here like in Texas where we’re from, making new friends was not as easy as expected. During our previous 8 meals when we were sitting in restaurants around a bunch of other westerners, no one said hi or smiled struck up conversations with us. Only when I initiated the conversation did people respond. This is the same as I’d expect in Texas but I’d heard so many raves about the friendliness in Ajijic, I had unrealistic expectations. Fourth, Uber’s are not plentiful and taxis don’t drive around looking for customers. The taxis seem to congregate in El Centro so it was necessary for us to walk 10 minutes to get a taxi. Fifth, Ajijic downtown is not as clean and organized as Playa del Carmen or Oaxaca. In retrospect, I should have expected this since it’s much smaller. I also realized once here that the property taxes here are minuscule so having thousands of foreigners live here doesn’t generate much money for the local government to make capital improvements. In conclusion, we still enjoyed Ajijic, and hope our insights help others have accurate expectations.

nice video, I have been there, in both places, and actually it's strange because some times, it depends on the situation you may feel like if u were in other countries cause there are so many people not from Mexico, in a mexican architecture town, but when you eat taquitos, birria, torta ahogada,etc,
then you 're sure u are in Mexico.

I joined a few FB pages and have gotten alot of info. Still see that you can rent a nice furnished place for 700 a month . Even if Utilities are not inc they are very reasonable . Health Care in the US has gotten beyond crazy . I can live in Mexico for what I have to pay for health insurance . How is the area in General thoughts far as things to do

But, to tell the truth, though beautiful as shown in your excellent video, Ajijic may be too small, and too gringo, for me to live in full time. But, I'll reserve my final opinion until after I see it for myself.

Here Be Barr Now that I’ve spent two weeks in Ajijic I can say my original assessment is true: it’s too small, too gringo and way overpriced. The White expats are on a mission to recreate San Diego in Mexico, at a terrible cost to the local population, who are being gentrified out of town. Among the expats the ratio of men to women is close to four to one; there’s a local AA chapter for good reason (old folks love to get their drink on) and the most popular drug in town is Viagra. Once the weekend visitors from GDL leave, it becomes deadly dull. The village literally shuts down at 9 PM. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t live there.

ETA that some peole believe pesticides are being overly-used...if that's a word...and may be the cause of recent kidney-related ailments.

All you have to do is go west of Chap[ala on the lake and ther are many people suffering with kidney issues. Places Like Mezcala which ia 15 minute bus ride from Chapala. Videos are great but one needs to hear both sides.

USA has the technology not the best schools for doctors,the best doctors are schooled in Guadalajara,Monterrey or Cuba.These doctors are brought to Houston and other parts in the USA to perform big surgeries
