Bill, loved your video! As you mentioned many if not most of the things that we think are important to us as we live in Ajijic full time for almost 5 years now! We are so happy living here that we have not returned to the U.S.A. We enjoy the Mexican people & their Culture so much!!! We really enjoyed your very informative Video! Thomas
Hi Thomas, thank you so much for the feedback. People, family, friends in the US always ask me, "When you coming Back?" I say "Never." I've been here for 16 years this month. I used to try to tell people in the US how much I love Mexico and why. I have up. I make these videos for people that I don't know. I think of my family and friends that have lived in the same house in the same city for all of their lives, in the cold, and I think, "What are you doing to yourself?" Anyway, thanks again and enjoy another great day. Best, Bill the Geek
Thanks! Learning so much from you, Bill. I will be traveling to Ajijic in a couple of weeks and am especially happy to learn where to meet new friends. When are you moving to Mazatlan?
Hi Dawn, thanks so much for your donation. I am moving to Mazatlan the first week of July. Can´t wait. The beach, the food, the beauty. I´m on the way. Thanks again, Bill
Hi Alessandra, Yes, Telsex is always good. Thanks for subcribing, more to come soon. We wanted to go to Guadalajara next, but the city is shut down due to Covid until the 2nd of January. Happy Holidays, Bill the Geek
Nice job Bill....We stayed on Ramon Corona last year....right where the school with the skulls is!!! You brought back many memories!!! We will be back....
Nice video, loved the drone footage, and how upbeat it was. Murders happen in rural places in America, too. Usually there's a reason, but sometimes there are crazies. And I agree with you about the people you hang out with.
I've watched many videos about the Lake Chapala area, but you have the best tour of the area of any I've seen. You really give a great introduction to the area, and the arial shots are a great addition. It motivated me to subscribe to your channel. The one thing that would make your videos more enjoyable going forward would be to have a camera or phone with image stabilization for the walking segments of your videos.
Thank you so much Fred. I'm working with a Canon m50 Camera, in the months to come, I will invest in a Gimbal Stabalizer. A good one will cost me about $300.00 US, but, it's on the way. Thank you so much, Bill the Geek
Wow. What mixed emotions. I really appreciate your perspective on this. Ajijic looks like a strange combo or quaint old Mexico and. . . Westwood/West Hollywood. I would feel really poor there, i think, which is why I moved away from Southern California. I am curious to see what other towns along the lake are like. Now that I've discovered your channel, I'm going to see what else you cover. Thanks for the vid!!!
Hi John, Ajijic is a mixed bag. Many people live there and don´t have a lot of money and they live great lives. Of course as in everywhere in the world, Ajijic does have many wealthy people. My car has a couple of problems, so we won´t be on the road for a couple of months, but then we will share with you videos from towns around the lake. Thanks so much for you comment, more to come, Best, Bill
I think the sight of beautiful senoritas passing by prompted the TelSex gaffe! it was funny to see you trying to keep a straight face. Great Video by the way!
Hi Savannah, Thank you so much and thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing. Glad you liked the information. Ajijic is a great place. I loved it there. Happy New Year, Bill
I heard about Ajijic from somewhere who moved there a couple years ago and was curious about it. Thank you for doing this detailed, extensive tour and your insights. Fantastic!
Bill, Nice video and very informative. I appreciated the local knowledge and especially the emphasis on the lovely scenery, trees, homes, etc. Your have a down to earth attitude and easy going demeanor. My wife and I are hoping to come down later this year in the Fall after COVID is hopefully a bit more under control. We live in upstate New York and are hoping to find a place to spend some time away from the cold, cloudy weather. I'm looking forward to watching some of your other videos.
Great video . Planning a move outside US this year . Looking at Ecuador, but this video is very interesting. We might need to come visit and look at this area . You do a great job giving details ! Keep up the great work !!
Howdy Mary, I've never been to Ecuador, but I'm glad these videos are helpful to you. I must say, its all in my mind. I can be happy anywhere that is warm in the winter, and in the 70's in the summer and has high speed internet. I'm creative and I love to create. Ohhhhhhhh,,,,, I forgot the cheap part. I only want to live in a place that is really cheap. I love San Francisco, and I love Manhattan, but,,,,,,,,,,, I don't have those dollars so I live here. Be well Mary and good luck in your looking around. Best, Bill the Geek
Hi Adria, Thanks much for the post. The beach is 5 hours away from here and I would suggest that you not swim in Lake Chapala because it is very poluted. If you want to swim in the ocean, I would suggest Melaque or Puerto Vallarta. Best, Bill
So informative! Thank you. Glad you present info about how to stay safe and other considerations that have to do with some not so perfect. Do you know of any meditation groups in Ajijic/Chapala?
Hi Diana, thanks so much and you are welcome. For meditation groups, go to this web site, lakechapalasociety.com/public/, look at their activities page, if you don´t find meditation, then email them directly and ask, they will know. Best, Bill
Hola c7eye, thanks much. When I was a little kid, I looked in my front yard and there was a little box. I opened it up, and BAMMMMMM!!!! The little box contained a lifetime supply of Joy!!!!!!! What a gift that was. Happy Weekend, Bill The Geek

Hello. I love your video. It is so informative. Maybe you can answer a question for me. Why do some people move to a foreign country only to recreate their own country there? My husband and have been exploring the possibly of buying a second home in Mexico. We have found, though, that in places like Lake Chapala and Ajijic are desirable but the real estate prices in most cases are more expensive than those here in Florida. Actually, we paid less than half here for similar houses there. So, we are researching other towns because we won't be living there full-time.
I totally agree with you. Why come to Mexico to be around Americans. I came here to get away from Americans. The only reason I am in Chapala is because my Mexican wife wanted to move here from Gaudalajara. I really prefer Puerto Vallarta, but it is a bit pricey also. A lot of people, as you know, just rent in Mexico for 6 months, and then go back to there houses in the states. I don't see a reason to own down here. My wife has a thing about owning, so we own. Anyway, those are my thoughts. Best, Bill
@@BillDallasLewis thanks for responding. Yes, renting seems the way to go although I'm like your wife when it comes to ownership. It isn't always practical though. I'm like you though in that I don't want to move overseas to a mini USA like in Boquete, Panama
If I wanted to live around gringos, I'd head north, there's a whole country full of them up there. Instead, I live in a nice old apartment (big rooms, 20 foot high ceilings) in an old part of Guadalajara. I looked at buying a house - but my rent is so inexpensive, I'll stay a renter. Guadalajara is much less expensive than Chapala or Ajijic, unless you are staying in the rich neighborhoods. The neighborhood I live in is within easy walking distance of the center of the city, there's an indoor market two blocks away, and the older parts of town are great to walk around in and explore. I don't walk on my own late at night here, I'm not as nimble as I used to be, but daytime and early evening are as safe as any US city I've lived in. The people are friendly, and if you speak some Spanish, and know and follow Mexican politeness customs, it's a great city to live in. It's got just about everything, but isn't full of gringos. There are a few neighborhoods with more gringos than mine - but it's easy to live your life here and not hear anyone speaking English in the streets for months at a time. I find Mexicans to be, in general, smart, thoughtful, and kind. I'm quite happy living here. And, on the very practical side, you can easily get home deliveries of bottled water, food deliveries from several good supermarket chains, and get delivery of food from local restaurants. And you can order stuff from Amazon Mexico or Mercado Libre, a similar site. It's a big modern city, but distinctly Mexican.
Hi Anita, All over the world Covid had taken a tool. The problem here is that if people get it, they keep it secret and pretty much there is no testing going on so you don't know what is what. Hopefully the vacine gets here by mid year. Anyway, thanks for the message and Happy Holidays, Bill the Geek
The school , with the wall of skulls is located near the Ajijic Plaza and across from the San Andreas church. The artist that created this (Efrem Gonzalez) has his Gallery just down this street. Each skull did cost some money and was donated by local people , who gave a name of a family member, who had died. Every year for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) this entire wall is aglow , with yellow marigold flowers on Nov. 1st. ( All Saints Day) for children/babies that have died, or a lit candle the night of Nov. 2nd. (All Souls Day) , for other family members. There is a small hole located at the bottom of the skull face, that a metal tube is placed with a small disk attached. The flower or candle has a place to sit.
Telcel was very expensive. When I visited Mexico two years ago, 5 G costed me 500 pesos. That’s was 5 dollars per G. In Vietnam, it think it only costs you one dollar for one G.
Great video Bill! Wonderful content. Thank you 🙏 for sharing. I am looking to move to Ajijic or Lake Chapala in July/August this year. Could you perhaps do a video on the best methods for finding an apartment/house to rent in Ajijic/LC? What resources are available? How should one go about it? Maybe cover a few neighborhoods. One note (recommendation). When you were walking thru the tianguis the camera was very shaky and it made me dizzy 🥴 lol. Perhaps try and hold the camera a little steadier or put it on a small tripod when you walk to have it remain steadier.
Hi Becca, thanks for the message. Sorry for the shaky camera shots. I just purchased and $250 camera stablizer, I'll be using it while walking from now on. Give me about a month for the video on finding a place to rent. In the mean time, Come on Down!!!! Best, Bill the Geek
Mickey, great comment. Pretty much, in the Guadaljara, Chapala, Ajijic areas there is no humidity. Especially in Chapala Ajijic. I lived in Chapala for 3 years and the mosquitos were terrible. I stayed with my cousin in Ajijic for a while, she had zero mosquitoes. Now I am near Tequila, I´ve been here for 2 weeks and I have not seen mosquitoes the whole time I have been here.
Hi Victor, No, actually I think you just have to keep searching around and meeting people that work in the market. Unlike the United States, here they don't have the Multiple Listing Service where everything can be pretty much found . If anyone else has a better tip, please let you voice be heard right here. Thanks, Bill
Hey Bill starting to love your youtube videos about Mexico. I am from NYC and will retire in 5 years. I am looking to buy a house in Mexico with my disabled Deaf sister that I take care of. Is there a deaf community in Mexico? where can my sister fit in using sign language? I would like to do some part-time work serving the disability community in Mexico. Thanks, Bill.
Howdy, great to hear from you. That's a very good question. I have no idea what the answer is. Try dropping these people a line. They are in Ajijic and they know everything, lakechapalasociety.com/public/ Best of Luck and thanks for the comment, Bill
Love the video. I am considering retiring to Mexico in about three years. This area is now on my list of places to visit first. One question, I love the bike path but is bicycle theft a problem in the area? I've heard that it is in other areas with expat communities.
Hello Ronald, Thanks much. I lived in the area for four years and I only heard of one person having a bike stolen. Just lock it up as you go and I think you will be ok. We had two bikes, left them in the back yard unlocked and had no problem. Best, Bill
Hi Thomas You might want to start fresh. It’s hard to say but everything down here is so cheap that you can get what you want and be better off. Plus if you rent down here the places are fully furnished. Some houses you might buy are furnished too. Come down with less I would think. I hope that helps. Best Bill the Geek
Hi Bill. I heard there are American and Canadian retirees in your area. Please tell me, or make a video - What do retirees do all day, every day? Are there activities? Centers like the Y? Places for retirees to get together and be social and active? - In Chapala or Ajijic - either.
Yes there are many of them here and they are all very different. Do a search for the lake chapala society. They have a ton of activities and people that you can meet. Many people explore Mexico. Some people sit at home and watch TV. Some people write books or paint. It is all here for you to create your life. Best Bill
I have been gone from Ajijic for 1 year this month. You did a great job and offered many good points. Question, are people as friendly as they were before Covid19?
Hi Joy, Good question. I am going to put up a video today or tomorrow. It is just visiting the People in Ajijic. People were extremely friendly. I don't think the Covid changed anything as far a Friendlyness goes. They are one Happy Group. Best, Bill
Hi Mary Kathryn, No I didn't Mention that. That's a blurry strip of Chapala, Ajijic. I drive down the strip about 4 times a week. Lots of really nice places to live and to shop. The new hospital is there also. I would think rentals would be a little cheaper there. Thanks for bring this up, Best, Bill the Geek
lm new, just found you, lots of good info.ls the water clean at the lake, what about sail boats are they allowed,is there a marina ?.What about cost of living ect ?.
Hi Ray Cost living is great. Your dollar will go beyond your imagination. But the lake is very poluted. We never ever eat the fish from the lake thousands of people do. Happy Holidays Bill
@@mauriciogonzalez2086 I love it. Very mello, many great people. I love making videos and learning about Mexico and I love learning about myself. Best to you Mauricio, Bill
If you want your Internet to not give you problems have them install new wiring. Then no problem. I did that after 2 years of problems then after new wiring Zero Problem.
Bill why mail your tax return when, if you make $75K or less per year, you can file for free electronically on the IRS website? If you're over the limit you can go to Turbotax's website, pay from @ $50 to $100 depending on the complexity of your situation and do it all electronically. BTW... Great video. Keep up the good work.
Hi Diane, thanks for the message. Trees painted white at the bottom? Great question. My wife is on the phone, I'll ask her when she get back and I will get back to you, Best, Bill the Geek
Ok Diane, my wife just got of the phone. She's Mexican, and I asked her, "Why do they paint the trees white at the bottoms?" She answered, "To protect the trees from the ants and other sicknesses from other insects." She added, "If the ants get up into the trees, they many times eat the trees." I don't know if it's a special pain or just white paint. There Ya go, hope that helps, Best, Bill the Geek
Thank you so much for all of your vids. Do you have any specific recommendations for a single woman with dog wanting to move to Lake Chapala? Can i find a place online? TIA
Hi TIA, if I were you I would stay in a hotel for about a week,,,, this is nice place with a nice resturant in Ajijic. hotelnuevaposada.com/homepage_english.htm Once you get there, then you can look for places for rent and there will be a lot of them. I don't know about the dog though with the hotel. Or, just starting looking on line. Contact the people at this site in Ajijic, lakechapalasociety.com/public/ They know everything and they are wonderful with many American and Canadian members. They may know of something for you. Best of Luck. I found my first apartment online in Vallarta 16 years ago.
@@mayrnibird9224 Hi Mayrni, that's a good question about the covid restrictions for travel, those seem to change everyday. Just bring your paperwork and cross your fingers. Best, Bill
You can live without a car but that depends on where you live. If you find a place close to markets then you will be fine. If you need to venture further then you can call a taxi maybe for a trip to Walmart. I have friends with no car and they don’t want a car. They take taxis. Taxis don’t cost very much. I hope that helps. I have a car and I like that.
@@BillDallasLewis Thank you for your prompt response - appreciate you and your wife sharing this information - it is very helpful. Just one more question about a car, did you purchase your car in the states and bring it to Mexico or purchase there? Is it difficult to get a license? What type of fees are needed for a car (license plates etc?)
@@anitawebb5924 Hi Anita, I drove my car down here. License plates are about $35.00 a year, getting a Mexican Drivers license cost about the same. The Mexican Drivers License exam is very easy. They show you pictures, and ask you for an answer. The Pictures are like a back road filled with cows. The question is, "What do you do here?" The answer is, "Stop." The questions are in Spanish, but where I took the test, they had a person that worked there that spoke English help me. My neighbor has purchased two cars here. One used and one new. She has had two good experiances. Best, Hope that helps, Bill the Geek
@@BillDallasLewis Hello Bill, Thank you for your timely response! Yes that helps tremendously. I have another at least three years before I retire, but I'm starting to plan now. I live in a suburb in WI and like small towns but like to hang out in big cities so love the idea that Guadalajara is so close, don't think I'd necessarily need a car in town? The next thing I'd want to examine is buying a house vs renting? I'm currently single & own a townhouse - very low maintenance
@@anitawebb5924 Hi Anita, I rented for 13 years, then we bought a house, brand new, three bedrooms, wonderful kitchen, two bathrooms, the cost was $135,000 US. Best, Bill
Hi Money, Monthly expenses. I can talk about mine, but I'll go back three years before I moved to Chapala. In Puerto Vallarta I paid 8,000 pesos for rent. That was for an Apartment that was like a one room, Marriot Hotel with Swimming pool, marble floors, all brand new appliances and fully furnished. When i say fully furnished, I mean sheets, blankets, knives, forks, drinking glasses, coffee maker, Microwave, coffee cups, plates bowls, bathroom towels and more. 8,000 pesos a month included electricity, meaning air conditioning, cable tv and a deck on the third floor tha over looked a big part of the city. 8,000 pesos is about $400 per month US. I paid another 1,000 pesos for my cell phone, that included internet, thats about $50 US. Other than that, it's all about food. I think I spent about$100.00 US on food. And that is a whole lot of really good food in Mexico if you shop at the street markets. So, there Ya go. About $550 US per month for every thing. Best, To you, Bill the Geek
I don't know if theres Totalplay down there, it's a kind of Telmex but better, i have in my home 150 mbps and the very first 6 monts i'll have the double of speed 300 mbps cuz they use fiber optic, and the price is just $639 pesos p/month
We came down in Oct to check it out. It's beautiful in pictures and videos, I didn't find it as pretty in person. After two days, I was ready to go home. You really have to like Mexico to live there. We live mostly in AZ and part-time at the beach in CA. Just a different world. 🙂 Those cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks were enough for me. They are awful to walk on. 🙈
So true. You have to love Mexico to live. Here. I love it. You need to come down and hang out with my wife and I. We will rock your world. Thank you so much for your honest comment. Best . Bill the Geek

Hi Dr. J, thanks for dropping me a line. Yes, Tex Sex was a mistake, but I think it would be a great business for Carlos Slim. If you see me on the street, say hello. Best, Bill the Geek
Hi Dora, sorry about that. I think I will be doing some real estate videos in the future. Presently, I have no clue how much those houses would cost Thanks for the idea for the future, Happy Friday, Bill the Geek
Hi Green Acres, The altitude is about 5 thousand feet. Some, a few people have a problem with that. My cousin is renting a large, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom in the center of Ajijic for $650 US per month. It´s really big. Look around and you can find a good price. Good Luck, Bill
Hi Pedro, Come on Down. I don´t know of any companies that are hiring, but I´m not looking. There is a lot of work in Guadalajara. You´ll have to look around. Thanks much for the comment and good luck. Best, Bill
I just found your videos. I am researching a move to Mexico and I plan on driving down early in 2021 to check it out to see the place and move down later in 2021. I would like to bring my car when I move down. How do you feel about this? What is involved with getting a Mexican driving license and insurance? I unfortunately have a very small budget I had a catastrophic accident when I was 40 and had a small savings and now live on my disability insurance. I have learned to be good at budgeting. I would love to live somewhere my money would go farther. I have always loved Mexico and I can drive there. I currently live in Northern California near SF. As you said it’s very expensive. So I need a change.
Hello there Troll4, I have had my Mexican insurance with this guy for 8 years, nacho.gonzalez@prodigy.net.mx I pay about $500 US per year. Don't hold me to that, I don't have the bill in front of me. His name is Nacho, he is in Puerto Vallarta. I use him for my insurance all over Mexico. Your American License is good down here until it expires, once that happens, you'll have to take the Mexican test. If your American is getting ready to expire, renew it up there, then you will have it for 4 years down here. Make sure your car was not made in Japan. If it was, it can't get a license plate for it, you can't sell it, you would have to drive back to the states to sell it. Other than that, Come on Down! Best, Bill the Geek

Nice video, loved the drone footage, and how upbeat it was. Murders happen in rural places in America, too. Usually there's a reason, but sometimes there are crazies. And I agree with you about the people you hang out with.
Thank you Shannon.

Hi John,
Ajijic is a mixed bag. Many people live there and don´t have a lot of money and they live great lives. Of course as in everywhere in the world, Ajijic does have many wealthy people. My car has a couple of problems, so we won´t be on the road for a couple of months, but then we will share with you videos from towns around the lake.
Thanks so much for you comment, more to come,

Bill, Nice video and very informative. I appreciated the local knowledge and especially the emphasis on the lovely scenery, trees, homes, etc. Your have a down to earth attitude and easy going demeanor. My wife and I are hoping to come down later this year in the Fall after COVID is hopefully a bit more under control. We live in upstate New York and are hoping to find a place to spend some time away from the cold, cloudy weather. I'm looking forward to watching some of your other videos.

I love San Francisco, and I love Manhattan, but,,,,,,,,,,, I don't have those dollars so I live here.
Be well Mary and good luck in your looking around.

Thank you for your videos! I am curious about near by beaches and swimming either on the lake or ocean. Where would you recommend?
Hi Adria,
Thanks much for the post. The beach is 5 hours away from here and I would suggest that you not swim in Lake Chapala because it is very poluted. If you want to swim in the ocean, I would suggest Melaque or Puerto Vallarta.

Howdy Rick, thank you very much.
Best, Bill
Also, Guadalajara was great, the climate is great and I lived there for 3 years. I never ever saw Americans, ever. Loved it.
@@BillDallasLewis thanks for responding. Yes, renting seems the way to go although I'm like your wife when it comes to ownership. It isn't always practical though. I'm like you though in that I don't want to move overseas to a mini USA like in Boquete, Panama
There are affordable options too, i have found

Exploring winter options , thank you so much!
Winter!!!!!!!!! YIKES!!!!!! I haven't seen snow in years. Grab your stuff and come on down.
I was there right before the pandemic began. It is good to see things looking more normal there. I can't wait to come back!

Great video, would like to know about the humidity there in Ajijic and if there is alot of mosquitoes?
Mickey, great comment. Pretty much, in the Guadaljara, Chapala, Ajijic areas there is no humidity. Especially in Chapala Ajijic. I lived in Chapala for 3 years and the mosquitos were terrible. I stayed with my cousin in Ajijic for a while, she had zero mosquitoes. Now I am near Tequila, I´ve been here for 2 weeks and I have not seen mosquitoes the whole time I have been here.
A terrific video, thank you.

Great video. Thank you. Do you know any website where I can see the real state market in ajiji?
Hi Victor, No, actually I think you just have to keep searching around and meeting people that work in the market. Unlike the United States, here they don't have the Multiple Listing Service where everything can be pretty much found . If anyone else has a better tip, please let you voice be heard right here. Love the video. I am considering retiring to Mexico in about three years. This area is now on my list of places to visit first. One question, I love the bike path but is bicycle theft a problem in the area? I've heard that it is in other areas with expat communities.
Hello Ronald,
Thanks much. I lived in the area for four years and I only heard of one person having a bike stolen. Just lock it up as you go and I think you will be ok. We had two bikes, left them in the back yard unlocked and had no problem.

Hi Thomas
You might want to start fresh. It’s hard to say but everything down here is so cheap that you can get what you want and be better off.
Plus if you rent down here the places are fully furnished. Some houses you might buy are furnished too.
Come down with less I would think. I hope that helps.

Trees painted white for 2 reasons. 1) Decorative... 2) nighttime safety cuz it reflects off the headlights so people don't veer into them.

Is a car necessary to live in Ajiijic? or most people utilize the bike path?
Best, Bill
Would be nice if you could talk about monthly expenses that you have. Thanks!
Hi Money,
Monthly expenses.
Best, To you,
Bill the Geek
I don't know if theres Totalplay down there, it's a kind of Telmex but better, i have in my home 150 mbps and the very first 6 monts i'll have the double of speed 300 mbps cuz they use fiber optic, and the price is just $639 pesos p/month
Thank Oscar, sorry for the very slow reply. I'll have to look up Totalplay for this area. Where are you located? Thanks, Bill the Geek.
We came down in Oct to check it out. It's beautiful in pictures and videos, I didn't find it as pretty in person. After two days, I was ready to go home. You really have to like Mexico to live there. We live mostly in AZ and part-time at the beach in CA. Just a different world. 🙂
Those cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks were enough for me. They are awful to walk on. 🙈

What is altitude and how much so a large home cost we are retired but still have kids at home we are exploring areas
Hi Green Acres,
The altitude is about 5 thousand feet. Some, a few people have a problem with that. My cousin is renting a large, 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom in the center of Ajijic for $650 US per month. It´s really big. Look around and you can find a good price.

Hello there Troll4, I have had my Mexican insurance with this guy for 8 years, nacho.gonzalez@prodigy.net.mx
I pay about $500 US per year.
