Making friends in nyc is easy where as many other states I’ve visited, people keep to themselves. I found myself lonely in Oregon. And the diversity can’t be beat. I have friends from all over the world who now live here. They visit their home but they always come back. I came to New York City for the first time on June 7. I completely fell in love with it and immediately booked a return trip a few weeks later. The biggest shock to me was that its really nothing like they show on TV and gets an unnecessary bad rap. I found New Yorkers for the most part to be rather friendly and helpful. There are alot of things to do and see in the city and beyond. I do photography and have spent a total of 12 days there so far taking 1000's of pictures and feel I haven't even scratched the surface. I did some looking and found I can get a job there that pays about 40 percent more than my current job and the cost of living is almost the same as my current town. Add to that not needing to buy a new car and I save $700/ month there. I know its not for everyone but my advice is visit and see for yourself. Native New Yorker here (born in Manhattan, grew up in Queens, moved back to Manhattan after school, then left but return for a "fix" every year or two). Like Paris and London, if you want to live in the center (Manhattan or hot areas of Brooklyn and Queens right over the bridges), you will pay huge bucks for a tiny apartment. You have to decide how important it is to have everything, including museums, parks and restaurants, within walking distance or just a few minutes by subway. If you are willing to take a subway into town, like I did as a kid in Queens, then you can get better deals in the boroughs. But living anywhere in NYC is still more expensive than many smaller cities. And don't forget the triple taxation.

Had to burst anyone’s bubble but I think the reality of NYC lies somewhere between Barr and Cash…. Of course it’s an incredible city… a world city along with London Paris Tokyo….there are many many pluses and many many negatives…of course the biggest drawback is cost of living…then probably the craziness of the city from nut jobs walking about within the “normal” population… it is pretty dirty…it is run down in many areas it is very dangerous in many areas…. It’s a city….i do think everyone should have a chance to live there at least for a little while… it will allow you to appreciate the city… as well as appreciate where you lived before or henceforth as well.

I went to Alphabet City in 2012 to write an essay about Disney actor/Oscar winner, Bobby Driscoll who died at 371 East 10th Street, next to the Tompkins Library. Everyone was nice to me and very helpful, especially the library personnel. I have one minor quibble. When I was a kid, a Navy family, we moved to Newport Rhode Island, to live off the base. Our new neighbors on Washington Street threw a block party to welcome us to the neighborhood. I've lived in Georgia most of my life, but I will alway miss that most, it is easy to fit in when neighbors throw a part to welcome you.

"Delivery is the answer..." to the demise of the vibrancy of NYC. Anyone anywhere can order from monopolies like Amazon/Wholefoods, etc, including in remote rural areas and suburbs. The whole point of living in a densely populated city is to be able to actually physically go to unique independent businesses and support them on a daily basis. To shop from store owners who are your neighbors and create a community. You can sit at home, stare at your phone and "spend your live ordering DoorDash" from virtually anywhere. What's the point of taking up space in a city if you are not making an effort to take advantage of the restaurants and culture and contribute to the economy of small businesses that made the city unique? Small businesses and restaurants are rapidly disappearing and even chain stores are closing and leaving the city in droves. Why would anyone want to pay the exorbitant apartment rents to sit in the tiny space and order everything to be delivered while the retail space on the street level remains vacant?

It’s crazy how so many things you said about NYC are similar to so many other US cities. Especially about how media outlets exaggerate negative aspects of a city for views/$$$. And how natives don’t see locals as local…even if they lived there over a decade & embrace the culture. As someone who moved to Seattle in 2012, I tell people the same thing. Crime ain’t that bad citywide. And it’s expensive in the trendy areas with a view but you’ll save $$$ with roommates or a place around the edges of the city without a view. Even in the PNW, with our legendary “Seattle Freeze”, you can make friends if you put in the effort & find folks with similar interests…it’s just keeping them long-term without flaking out is the problem 😂. We need more videos like this in every major city to demystify the horrors of big city living instead of the usual: “let me show you the worst hoods in (insert city name) & tell you how it’s alllll going to hell!!!”….while the person reporting is living in a cookie cutter suburb in the middle of nowhere USA 😂.

I may have said this in the comments for a previous video. What can I say? I'm getting old & I repeat myself. But as an outsider who's been visiting NYC semi-regularly for the last 8 or 9 years, I like it more every time I visit. And as a car-free person generally, the situation for pedestrians/cyclists has gotten progressively better in that time. I imagine with a less working class-hostile mayor & governor, it would be even better. We deal with the same issue in DC, where the mayor is also in the pocket of big business and has no idea who the people are, much less what they need.
When I was there last December, down in the Financial District, there was this moment when there were no cars around. People were walking and chatting, folks were walking their dogs. It was lovely. Then a light changed and the cars roared back onto the scene. A real visceral reminder that cities aren't loud. Cars are loud. Plus, they take way to much real estate away from people. I was up there this past July and finally made it to Queens and to a part of Brooklyn I hadn't been to before. Took ferries between Manhattan, Brooklyn & Queens. Really lovely. I don't want to pretend everything was perfect. We rode around on the buses in Queens, and there were some parts that weren't amazing and that I'd probably think twice about living in. But I grew up in a town with 30,000 people, in a state that is often listed as the lowest crime state in the country, and there are neighborhoods in that town I wouldn't walk in by choice and where I wouldn't leave my car unattended. The community vibe was amazing, though. While we waited for a ferry to go back to Manhattan, there was a big party/cookout in a little park by the dock. It's the kind of thing you can't really do in the suburbs, if for no other reason than some nosy Karen would call the cops.
As a guy who grew up in a semi-rural small town, I never thought I'd be the kind of person who'd want to live in NYC, but boy was I wrong. I'd move there tomorrow if I thought I could make it work financially. Sadly, I'm a life-long clockwatching slackass, so the kinds of jobs I'm qualified for would probably have me commuting from Trenton or something (I'm stuck way out in the sticks of the DC suburbs as it is, now. When I worked in downtown DC, my commute was between 60 & 90 minutes each way).
I'm also a fan of Philadelphia, which I think gets really poorly treated on this platform. When I was first trying to find videos about it, almost all I could find was poverty-p0rn. Really sick videos that exploited the unhoused and folks suffering from addiction. But Philly is so much more than that. Thankfully, I'm seeing more positive videos coming out about it now, that show other sides of the city.
    Anyway. Cool vid.

Before ever visiting NYC, I used to watch a different RUclipsr who went from positive to really negative for the likes (as you described), plus they were very fond of recording their moving feet which gave me severe motion sickness (as happens to a certain percentage of people). So, I stopped watching them. I had to ask, if things suck so bad, then why not move their family out of the area? If one can afford it (and this RUclipsr can), then they’re being fake about how “terrible” the city is.

Same! Especially when I found out that the terrible RUclipsr had some dated stories that tried to pass some of them off as new/recent.

I couldn’t agree more on the last part. I live here in Queens but will be moving back to California in a few weeks. The diversity of food options for example is the one that I will totally miss when I’m back home. The bagels, the pizza, the noise of the subway, the momos, Flushing area, Jackson Heights, Astoria, went as far as Whitestone for Utopia bagels, to Arthur Ave in the Bronx, went uptown to downtown Manhattan, and don’t even get me started on Brooklyn coz that deserves a separate paragraph. But yeah, I explored them all. NYC is beautiful but chaotic, but for me that’s the charm of this city that define it as a cultural melting pot and I will be glad to look back and say that at some point in my life I have experienced living in this great city 😊

I was only in New York for a few days on two occasions. The fun part is, I felt comfortable instantly. Other parts of the US (I'm European) I travelled felt really alien. Even Boston was strange, they really shove the "Freedom" stuff in your face every step of the way. In New York I felt strangely at home, no matter where I went. The people are great. Central Park was like magic. And, for comparison, London doesn't work for me. It has a better transit system, but it feels lifeless and dystopian somehow, and I felt that way even before Brexit. Seattle was the other place in the US that made me feel really comfortable.

I'm a transplant from North Jersey and moved to Manhattan in 2004. I love my adopted city, even though it can be quite expensive. One thing that we may forget is the savings on not owning a car. I understand that many city people need a car, but if you don't, the savings is huge. I gave up my car in 2012 and the yearly savings was $11,000. And the car was paid off! I ride the subway regularly, and although there are inconveniences, it is incredibly convenient.

Cars are a huge financial drain that most Americans don't consider. You might pay between $81 (San Francisco) to $132 (NYC) per month for a monthly transit pass with unlimited rides. Compare that to the cost of a car payment, insurance, and gas every month.

@@attituneand that doesn’t even include all the “surprise” costs that come from owning a vehicle. Repairs and maintenance depending on your vehicle and where you live can quickly get VERY expensive. Most Americans never consider how much a car eats away at their monthly budget until they’re in a situation where they no longer need one where they live.

If you really look at the statistics, New York is one of the safest cities in the U.S.. With 8 million people and only around 400 murders in 2023, that’s safe imo. Here in Baltimore, we have 1/10 of the people but around 300 murders a year. I’d love to live in NY but that rent scares me.

As someone who grew up in South Brooklyn, I can confirm that prices are indeed crazy out there as well, albeit not as bad as the trendy areas, as stated in the vid

31 days, that is how long it takes to be considered a New Yorker. My mom came to visit for a month when my wife and I when we lived there a couple years. On the last day riding the 6 train, my mom had a woman basically sit on her lap trying to get a non-existent seat on the train. The woman then looked disgusted at the other woman eating her lunch on the train, and then was put off when my mom tried to get up for her stop. I feel like that was the day my mom officially became a honorary New Yorker.

You can call yourself NYer when people on the street stop to give you flyers, and does not try to scam you.
That means - you are the part of the City, kind a background.
And regarding to "make a friends" - In City you just don't need to distance from people, just don't stay at home, enjoy the city.

There’s a certain real estate broker RUclipsr who was popular for showing apartments for rent in NYC. He had a pretty good following among locals. At some point, he shifted his content to focus on supposed out-of-control crime and a migrant invasion in NYC. All his thumbnails are now AI-generated images depicting a dystopian NYC that’s on the verge of being burned to the ground. All the new videos are titled “IT BEGINS...” followed by some claim of New York’s downfall.
His new audience is MAGA types who have never set foot in New York, and his popularity has skyrocketed because he’s confirming their worst fears. To New Yorkers, it’s obvious B.S., but his audience believes that he is the only one brave enough to tell the truth. Judging by the volume of “New York is dying” videos he’s been churning out, he’s seems to be profiting nicely.

How do you know his new followers are MAGA types and have never set foot in MYC? Do you know them personally or are you talking out of your ass? Also, his thumbnails might be al generated, but his claims in those videos he always references them. Are you saying he makes false claims? Is it not true that if you steal less than a 1000$ its a misdemeanor? And why do you not just say his name if you hate hime so much you decided to talk smack about him in a different youtuber’s comment section

3 weeks of you salary goes towards rent. You have to make $150,000 a year if you are single to live comfortably. NYC is for upper middle class and the migrates.
