Contralto and Tenor Duet with orchestra

    Edna Brown and James Reed

In February 1917, the New York Times critic wrote that "I Never Knew" was the best song from the new musical, "Canary Cottage," claiming its melody "winning." Now, almost 100 years later, the melody seems a bit stiff, but the lyrics, by contrast, are still quite clever.
"I Never Knew" is presented here as the companion piece to "It's Always Orange Day in California," also from "Canary Cottage" (and also presented on this channel). Below are the lyrics for "I Never Knew":
    "Most everybody
    Has made a study
Of how to play the role of lover.
    It's my impression,
    You know each lesson.
There's nothing left you can discover!
    I did till you came,
    And brought a new game,
That put me in the kindergarten school.
    You were the smartest,
    Old loving artist.
I thought you understood each lover's rule!
I never knew what love could do,
Till your love met with mine.
I never knew what hands could do,
Till our hands met one time.
I never knew what eyes could do,
Till my eyes met with thine.
I never knew what lips could do,
Till your lips met with mine!
    I must be candid,
    You surely handed
    My education some surprises!
    You hug the tall ones,
    You hug the small ones.
I think your arms will fit all sizes!
    I started burning
    My books of learning,
The day I met your lips, your hands, your eyes!
    In lovers' college,
    You lead in knowledge.
I've never had a teacher half so wise!"
