Army paratrooper for 15 years. The rifle you have is an M-1A which is the civil version of a M-14. The M-1A is only semi-auto whereas the M-14 is a selective fire (Semi and full auto). It's not M-1 Garand as it's a magazine fed rifle. An M-1 Garand is clip fed.

It is a Springfield M1A1 with a muzzle brake. It is a modern production, it does not have a suppressor on it as some have stated below. It resembles an M14, as an M1A1 and M14 look the same, but the M14 is fully automatic and the M1A1 is a normal civilian semi-automatic.

Maybe the rifle is stolen out of an car and then dropped in the water. Who knows. It's a $2500,- rifle. The previous owner must still be very sad with his lost.

I only agree with them contacting the police because it's mighty odd to find a rifle ... especially an expensive one like that ... dumped in a river. Could be stolen, or possibly tied to some crime. If it's a real M-14 (not a M1A) then it's a selective fire full auto. I wish they had better pics. An illegal un-transferrable M14 seems most likely to end up in a river; judging by the condition of the stock it's been underwater for a very long time. The barrel appears to be stainless, more likely an M1A. I would have kept it to see if I could restore it to working order.

I only agree with them contacting the police because it's mighty odd to find a rifle ... especially an expensive one like that ... dumped in a river. Could be stolen, or possibly tied to some crime.
If it's a real M-14 (not a M1A) then it's a selective fire full auto. I wish they had better pics. An illegal un-transferrable M14 seems most likely to end up in a river; judging by the condition of the stock it's been underwater for a very long time. The barrel appears to be stainless, more likely an M1A.
I would have kept it to see if I could restore it to working order.
