- The CZJ Tessa is often regarded as a great and affordable vintage lens, but is it really?
So, this is an old video, from when I was moving my first steps in the world of vintage lenses. Turns out that it actually is a legit Tessar, but for some sort of licensing issues wasn't sell under the Zeiss name.

It's not a knockoff, it's a real Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar. The East Germans didn't have the rights to use the names Carl Zeiss and Tessar in some western countries. As you know there already was a West German Carl Zeiss in Oberkocken, and they had the rights to those names at the time. So you will see many East German Zeiss lenses marked "Aus Jena". The 'T' here stands for "Tessar". Their Sonnar lenses were marked 'S'' and the Biometar lenses "'Bm'. So the 'T' has nothing to do with T-stops.
If there is a red 'T', that of course stands for the Zeiss type of coating. You don't find the red T on all lenses.
West German Zeiss lenses for export in the East where for some time marked "Oberkochen OPTON" and "Pl" instead of Carl Zeiss or Zeiss-Opton Planar.
Thank you so much for the clarification! I knew about the red T indicating the coating, but I couldn't find much about all the rest, so I assumed that for some reason they used T-stops. So, other than the name, are there any differences in quality or build that you know about?
@@MarcoAries The build quality should be the same. But these lenses were made for decades so I'm sure there were some design changes. DDR camera enthusiasts should know more about that.
@@spajdude Right, thanks!
@@spajdude Is aus Jena tessar the same lense about the optic quality?!
Have more than a few of both the Zeiss Jena Tessar and the Oberkocken Zeiss Tessars. Bought them for pennies on the dollar when no one wanted them. Yes, wide open, the Tessar is not the sharpest lens around but at 5.6, 8, and 11, it becomes blazingly sharp. These after all are the most commonly used f stops. You can't really go wrong with a Tessar on your camera.
When it comes to "most commonly used f stops" I'm on the other side of the fence: I almost never get past f8 😉
@@MarcoAries Not a bad thing to do. As the old newspaper photographers' saying goes, "F 8 and be there!" I like to shoot a lot of community events, macro and family gatherings, so sometimes I go overboard and shot at f16 and even f22 for better dept of field, but you do lose a lot of sharpness.
Great video and review, the only thing I’m confused with is when you say T stops, I’ve had this same lens since I was about 12 on a practica super TL, an earlier model camera than the one you have. I’m wondering if yours says ‘T’ on it as that was a type of coating they have historically marked up on the lenses over the years?
Good question. In my case it indicates the aperture, it is marked on the front as T1:2.8 f=50 and based on what I found out it was sort of an unbranded version, probably due to some licensing issues, so I guess they had to change a few things to differentiate it from the main "Carl Zeiss" line.
Nice jazzy funky tune. Good images quality📷
Thanks! ;)
Hi, Thanks for the video. I have just bought a Zenit B off EBay and unusually it comes with the Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm 2,8 lens. Trying to find more detail for the lens. Also, apparently the lens is a bit stiff on certain stops so also a bit quirky.
Well, thank you for watching! About the stiffness, some call it "soviet gunk". The lubrication wasn't that reliable so a number of lenses coming from soviet or soviet germany factories are either stiff or loose. My Industar and Helios are both stiff, the Industar would just get stuck, so I had to disassemble, clean and lubricate it.
Thanks Marco, you saved me buying this. I would have come to same conclusion about it.
Glad it was useful!
It would be great if you could find that version with 14 blades, for a review
Yes, it would!
Is aus Jena tessar the same lens?
Yes, same lens, different name
Amazing video...I wonder...to buy it???
Do you mean where to find one? Well, ebay and flea markets are your best bet
@@MarcoAries good person give my this...i am London i take it for 20 pounds ,also the best portraits lens Helios 44mm
@@MarcoAries Today i do shot with helios and Tessar and for near is amazing lens, but helios is te better!
Yeah, the Helios has a very distinctive look, the Tessar is more "normal"
@@MarcoAries I have another, too interesting lens Nikon 50mm f1.8 E ...without electric _manual focus and settings!
Good video, but the name of the German city "Jena" is pronounced as "iena".
Oh, good to know, thank you! ;)
