Hi there, I use one of these lenses. When you pull back the aperture ring to pre-set the aperture, move it until the aperture value (2.8, 4, 5.6, etc) you want is directly below the 🔺. Let go of the ring. That’s you ready to go.
The spring loaded mechanism was for the original film camera. It allowed the photographer to quickly open the aperture to maximum so they’d have more light to focus with. As soon as they pressed the shutter button, the lens would automatically stop down to the aperture they pre-set.
Try it yourself. Set the aperture to f8 then twist the aperture ring so it opens up. It’ll stay open when you let the ring go. Push the small pin on the base of the lens and it’ll close down to f8 - just as it would if attached to the Praktica camera it shipped with. :o)
If you have any questions please ask.

This is a very helpful insight! Thank you so much!

The reason why the aperture ring is "weird" is because of the camera being used at the time. That camera would not have had any way to stop down the lens to the selected aperture so you can check depth of field and so the light meter can measure.
This is a "semi-auto" lens, also known as a pre-set lens. The lens is normally fully open to let you focus with all available light. Then you turn the ring to measure the light and check depth of field. The ring only goes to the aperture that you have selected, to change that selection, as you discovered, you must push in the ring and then set the aperture. This is obviously an awkward way of doing it, but thats when back in the day you would look to upgrade your camera and lens to a fully auto one.
So you focus, then turn the ring to measure, then set the correct aperture as told to you by the light meter, then release leaving the ring to spring back and letting you refocus if needed. When you actually shoot, the camera will push the little metal pin that sticks out near the M42 screw mount, this closes the aperture down to where you set it, it releases the shutter and then releases the pin once the shutter is closed again. That process is automatic. Later cameras and lenses are fully automatic and allow you to push a button or lever to stop down the lens to take a light reading, from the camera itself. Those lenses had the normal click stop aperture ring that everyone is used to.
The adapter that you are using is designed to always push in this pin, so the lens will always be stopped down to whatever aperture selected.

I have this Lense with the original Camera that belongs to it and it works like that.
Its an analog Lense for SLRs, that means you want to have 2.8 in the viewfinder always, because otherwise the viewfinder is dark and you can't see things.
Thats why you set the aperture by pushing down the ring and select your aperture like 8.
Then you no longer push down the ring and turn it back to f/2.8 It will then stay at f/2.8 and you have a bright view in the viewfinder.
If you then push the shutter button on the original camera, it will press on the back of the lense and switch the aperture back to the value you set (f/8) and then make the photo.
After the photo, you again turn the aperture ring to f/2.8 and you have a bright viewfinder again. Press the shutter, the camera pushes into the back of the Lense and the Aperture goes back to f/8 (or whatever you set it).
This feature doesn work using an adapter because you are lacking the feature of the camera that pushes in the back of the lense. For that reason, the M42 Adapter you use always pushes that pin for you so you always have the aperture you set.
If you set it to f/8 and try to wind up, it doesnt work because the M42 constantly pushes the switch.
Remove the M42 Adapter from the Lense, set the aperture to f/8, then wind it up to f/2.8 (it will stay at f/2.8) and manually push the "thing" on the back of the lense and be suprised.

I will recommend you another vintage lens but this time russia. It is actually a series of lences - helios 44 (гелиос for the pure russian versions). It is 58mm 2.0 and it is 1:1 copy of some carl zeiss lens :D It is cheaper and a lot better. Much more bokeh and fairly sharp wide open. I live in Bulgaria and here many people are selling them so the prices go down to 20 us dollars i think. The best versions are helios 44-2 and 44m because they have this swirly bokeh. 44m-4 and 44m-6 are good too. :)

You both did a great job!! What you went through is 90% of photography: stealing great locations, dealing with the equipment, coming away with the shots!
I am a professional - and I too just ordered this lens - and focusing well IS HARD it takes a lot of work to get it right. It sounds easy but it’s surprisingly hard. But you stuck with it!!!
    Keep going! Keep growing!!
    Brava!! To you!!

Nice video girls. Probably the reason this lens works different than normal, is this one was designed to go on a Exakta camera, I think. Exakta is one of the most beautiful cameras out there, especially the 50s versions. And this camera is weird on all kinds of points. But.... beautiful. 👍🏻

I've got the carl zeiss jenna ddr 50mm lens on my retro East German Praktica LTL, it's the black and silver one (zebra striped version)
I like the images, it doesn't have that quirky aperture ring yours has.
    I enjoyed watching your video.👍

Ouch, I own the same one and getting the focus right is a pain in the butt. Pro tip: Shoot a series of photos while turning the focus ring just to be sure that at least one picture is sharp.

Well, I wouldnt really use a manual focus lense on a dSLR unless the camera has a focus peak option.
But I found it joyfull to use manual lenses on my Fuji mirrorless, really fast to use with the peak.

the tessar loves color.. extreeme.. in the store you should try first to do a white balance to compensate for the neon lighting.. and your takes on golden hour, your model shouldnt be hiding on the shade but shooting at her with the sun at one side or behind the camera.. showering with golden (sorry for the pun) all her smooth young skin.. its just keep on practicing and you will get it...
btw.. that looks more like a industar 29 than a carl zeiss tessar!

As a beginner you’ve done an amazing job with a vintage lens. The aperture is very strange to get used to. I have a 1958-1961 build model which is currently stripped to a rebuild . Great lens
