How to Get Extra Slow Motion using Speed Warp - DaVinci Resolve 16 Tutorial

  • In today's tutorial we're talking about retime effects in DaVinci Resolve 16 and the incredible results you can get with Speed Warp using Optical Flow. This can allow you go get extra slow motion out of shots and can be used to get some pretty extreme shots, but it also has a lot of use in everyday situations where you need a shot to be just a bit longer to fit the edit. So something shot at 24fps could be stretched out to 48fps or more to fit your needs.
    I will note that speed warp is only available in the studio version but everything else I show can be done in the free version.

    Notes
    So it's worth noting that by conventional wisdom there's typically specific frame rates you should adjust your shots to based on your timeline frame rate. For example having 30fps footage on a 24fps timeline using the nearest frame mode would cause certain frames to drop resulting in stuttered playback, whereas if you had 48 fps footage every second frame would get removed resulting in smooth playback. This is why in the video I typically adjust to double the frame rate. However, with the use of optical flow I'm under the impression that it could result in smoother playback at different rates, but I haven't done enough testing to fully back that idea.
    Also I hope you enjoyed the beginning clip, it was fairly goofy and set up super fast so I did some heavy lifting in the color grading department to get it looking close to what I had in mind. I'm planning more dramatic intros like that cause I feel like they're a fun way to demonstrate the effect before we get into things.

    How amazing is speed warp eh? Being able to slow a shot of a human face to 12fps and playback at 24fps with minimal artifacts (basically none at higher shutter speeds). Friggin awesome.

    This works really well for smoothing out timelapses as well. I can take 120 frames and stretch them out into a 10+ second, 60fps clip that is butter smooth.
    Thanks so much for this tuturial!

    Yes!! Increase shutter speed!!! Inter Frame interpolation works best with crisp clean images.

      No worries. Can be a good thing to think about if you intend to get sharper frames for Optical flow to make new frames from.

    Very helpful video! I've used this a few times with 1080p footage which has turned out great, but I've started trying this with 4K footage and every time I try using Speed Warp it keeps giving me a GPU memory is full error... Do you know any way to remedy it? I don't mind letting it sit longer to render, but once that error pops up it the footage gets all glitchy... Thanks!

    When you said not able to play in realtime and i'm sitting here working with 4K RAW files with speedwarp playing in realtime, guess that 3090 RTX was a good investment after all, haha. Didn't know it was so hard on the computer.

    Hey, great video! What project settings in terms of framerate do you have to use to get best results with this method?

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  3 года назад

      I'd say a really fast shutter speed to minimize motion blur, then as fast a framerate as your camera can do at your desired resolution.

    Hi ! Always great and friendly tutorials ! I hace a question, what would be a good configuration do use speed warp decently on a mac / AMD GPU to retime with speedwarp ? I'm using 60fps 4K footage out of a Ninja V / GH5 but I tried to do some 50% speed speedwarp on my 2x RX580 4Go GPus and it is.... very very slowmo !!! something like 30 min to retime 10 sec of footage. With generally a crash of DVR at the end. I don't need realtime retiming but something better than what I have. On Big Sur no way to have Nvidia GPU, would a 5900 XT be enough or isd it better to go ti the new 6000 series ? When available, of course...

      Hmm great question. Honesty that's a tough one. From what I understand, AMD GPU's aren't handling resolve too great. Wish I could help more

    Why not record at 75fps @ 4K to get more out of the frames/smoother playback???

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  4 года назад +1

      Great question. I figured since quite a few cameras can do 4k 60p it would directly apply to more folks. But you're right, if you have a P4k and don't mind the wide aspect ratio that would help even more for sure.

    I wonder if speed warp will be good for mixing frame rates, like using speed warp to make a 24fps video fit in a 30fps timeline. I've tried optical flow at highest quality with artifacts, and frame blending to see a blurry mess.

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  3 года назад +1

      It depends on what you're shooting. Something moving slowly, probably gonna be fine. Fast moving action on the other hand is gonna give you troubles.

    I have the free version, when I try to use the speed warp option it gives me a watermark? is there a way to get rid of it?

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  4 года назад +1

      So speedwarp is a studio only feature. The free version lets you test it out that. Most features involving Resolve's Neural Engine require the studio version. Optical flow however does an great job, and is available in the free version.
