Born and raised in Chicago I remember when I was in 5th grade I pretended I was sick and my mother a nurse wasn’t buying it but my dad insisted I was. As soon as she left he said to me that he knew I wasn’t sick but we’re gonna watch a movie. And we watched this movie great memory
I never faked sick. I liked school. When I was older and had a car I just skipped instead. Almost didn't graduate. They found a half credit class with an opening for me. Damn straight I went. Highschool diploma 😎 lol
I used to fake sick all the time in high school. Then one time I was actually sick, mom didn’t believe me. Went to the doctors. Had 104 fever. Insides felt like liquid. Felt like I had a grocery bag with water in me. ( that’s the best I can describe it) lol
Chicago was great before it became a war zone used to go there all the time till it became what it is now and that coming from a guy raised in southwest t Detroit now it’s safer to stay here
FUN FACT: This impression he does is one Brodrick and he used to do from their early Broadway days based on a stage director they had great affection for who used to talk that way. There's a behind the scenes featurette on the making of this where it shows them both going back and forth having a stage director-off. It's pretty great. That voice is addictive to do.
You have no idea how big this movie was in the 80's. People walking around in "Safe Ferris" shirts, it really defined the decade, along with John Hughes' other films.
This is Cameron's movie. Regarding the museum scene, John Hughes said when Cameron was staring at the painting...“I used it in this context to see---he’s looking at that little girl-which again is, a mother and a child. The closer he looks at the child, the less he sees, of course, with this style of painting. But the more he looks at it, there’s nothing there. He fears that the more you look at him (Cameron), the less you see. There isn’t anything there. That’s him.”
I love the scene of Cameron looking at the painting ... the little girl in the centre facing a different direction than everyone else, everything looks calm and peaceful, but to me the closer we get to the painting, it looks like the girl is screaming. Calm on the outside, screaming within ... that's Cameron
*One of the first movies that put in after credits scenes!* However, with no internet, you had to hear about it from someone who discovered it - and that made everyone go and see it again to find out what they missed. This movie is part of my childhood! ❤️ (Yep! I’m OLD! 🤫)
The water tower that says “Save Ferris” is one that I actually worked on in 2020. I worked with the painter/ forman who applied that lettering for the movie. The city wanted to re-apply it during the project but since they didn’t own the rights to the phrase it would have cost them so much money, so they decided against it. Later that year my 2nd son was born and we named him Ferris.
Both of my parents were doctors, so yeah, faking an illness to get out of school was not really on the table for me. The few times that they did let me stay home, I'm fairly certain that they knew I wasn't sick, but decided to take pity on me regardless and just let me have a mental health day. They were good parents, just not easily fooled.
@OctoKrool Ugh, it was like trying to beat Dark Souls 2 on max difficulty, but with the added challenge of only being allowed to touch the controller with your tongue, lol
@Sputnik2708 I don't have the greatest insight in that regard, fortunately. My family is from Canada, but we lived down in Oregon for most of my childhood. My parents ran their own clinic throughout those years, and any time I had a genuine health problem, I would obviously just go to them with it. I wasn't privy to how they handled the billing aspect of those visits, and since I moved back up to Canada for university immediately after graduating high school, I never had to navigate the US private health care system without my parents' assistance. It's probably for the best, in hindsight. My appendix ruptured when I was 24 and I had to have emergency surgery. If I had been living in the states at the time, I would not have been able to afford health insurance, and the procedure plus an overnight stay in a private room at the hospital would have cost me AT LEAST $25,000. Thankfully, because I was living in Canada, I went through that same process and, when all was said and done, I only had to pay $10 for overnight parking. That, more than any other reason, is why I will never live in the States again. Their health care system is utterly psychotic.
This is a fun movie. Though it called “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, Cameron was the true protagonist of the movie. Ferris was the “trickster”. The one who put Cameron in situations where he had to learn, adapt & grow. It’s Cameron who has truly changed by the end of the movie. The same could be said of the sister, just to a lesser degree.
"Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Fun Fact: During the parade, several of the people seen dancing (including the construction worker and the window washer) originally had nothing to do with the film. They were simply dancing to the music being played and John Hughes found it so humorous that he told the camera operators to record it. Also, Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward, who played Ferris's parents, married in real life after filming this movie, but later divorced in 1992.
The whole save Farris thing was to point out how well liked and apparently connected Farris was in that town, he makes favors happen where they are needed or wanted to happen.
Oh joy!!!! One of my favorite movies growing up! John Hughes made films for my childhood! Fun Fact: I was (kind of) in the parade scene, but was really short so I’m not in the shot. It was a Saturday and my mom needed to stop by her office in the building where the dancers are on the steps (was the First Chicago Bank at the time, but now Chase). While she was inside, my stepdad, my two little cousins and I got to be a part of the parade spectators singing Twist & Shout.
I’ve been waiting on this reaction from you two! I was born in ‘82, so I always say I am from the movie, music and television generation. My parents used to do that in the winter especially - a few days a month if I had no tests and no projects due, I'd be reported as having a case of "alpine flu" and we'd go skiing. Good times!
This is one of my all time favorite movies. My senior year I got in trouble for missing more than half of the first quarter of the school year. Cut a lot of classes. Almost got caught by my mom at the mall. She used to work for JC Penny’s . We were hanging out at the mall and she happen to be visiting the JC Penny’s at the mall. My buddy Dave happen to see her reflection in a mirror, and told us all to get down behind the clothes, racks. As soon as it was safe, we headed for the door and decide to go see a movie because we knew she wouldn’t go there. I believe it was Heavy Metal.
There's a theory that suggests that Ferris might be stuck in a time loop, ala Groundhog Day. This would explain how Ferris is able to get away with so much without getting caught or even noticed by the people that think he suppose to be sick. There's a few holes in the theory I'm sure but it's a fun thing to think about.
There’s a fairly popular theory that suggests that this entire film is a figment of Cameron’s imagination. I think it’s a fascinating alternative way of looking at it: Ferris Bueller is the person Cameron aspires to be (laid back as opposed to tightly wound, adventurous rather than paralyzed by indecision)

I could talk about my love for the film for hours all day long, and I can't wait to see your hilarious reaction & commentary! I definitely needed this tonight!
In the original script - Jeanie and Ferris had a younger brother and sister…but they were cut from the film. You can actually see all 4 children in a family photo in Mr. Buehler’s office and their “art work” on the kitchen fridge. I’m from Chicago and my classmate has a scene in the film. It would have been impossible to do all their various activities during one school day…but I’ve always loved the movie…because it’s my hometown and my high school years as well :)
I went to a private school so our report card schedule was every 9 weeks instead of 6. We were allowed 4 unexcused absences every 9 weeks, and I've often wondered if people noticed that through junior high and especially high school I was absent _the last four Fridays of every 9 weeks._ My mom would call me in sick and we'd go shopping and have lunch and see a movie or something. lol I was also in high school when the HP movies started coming out, and she pulled me out of school the day that Chamber of Secrets came out my senior year. 😂
19:36 Cameron is looking at French pointillist painter Georges Seurat's painting _A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte_ (1884-1886), which was the inspiration for American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim's musical _Sunday in the Park with George_ (1984).
I absolutely adore Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. My neighbour (also my teacher at the time) introduced me to it when I was about 13 and I have loved it ever since. The music, the quippy dialogue, the set-ups and payoffs are so brilliantly written. Will you be reacting to ‘Weird Science’? BTW, I loved your predictions about the car!
This was one of the big movies of the 80's. Maybe have inspired me to miss a few days of school. The licence plate on the Ferrari said Nervous, which was what it represented to Cameron.
The scene in the art museum was the Painting Sunday on the Isle of LeGrande Jatte. It was painted using pin point colors forcing the mind to blend them together hence Cameron staring at it.
Yes, it's a special technique called "Pointillism". He was staring looking deeper to see all of the small different points of color that made up the whole.
That scene where he was running through the gardens was actually referenced in Spider-Man Homecoming and the end credit scene was referenced in Deadpool.
True story. So i went to high school in a Chicago suburb close to where the house used for Cameron's house actually is in real life. We had a senior ditch day. Nearly our entire senior class, like 1000, students (yes large school) ditched. It was a great day. And we all got Saturday school for it. 1000% worth it. We even had t-shirts made.
Words of wisdom. I graduated in 1985 and was rarely sick, so I was rarely absent. And, as the oldest child, I can honestly say I never noticed my younger sister and brother's school absences. As a 56 year old working person, I still rarely get sick, but I do take mental health days.
I was a teenager in the 80s. I saw this movie when it came out in the theaters. I also hold the record for missing days in school! Lots of us in the 80s did this.
Now for the secret reveal. Ferris was Camron’s imaginary friend. Ferris’ perfect parents were Camron’s idea of what parents should be. Ferris’ sister is what Camron imagined a sister would be like. Sloan is Camron’s idea of a perfect girlfriend.
*Ferris's. You still have to add an s after the apostrophe if the word ends in S- as the S at the end of the word has nothing to do with the ownership! What a Maroon!
I faked sick a lot in elementary school and middle school. When I got to high school I just ditched.....a lot. I even got my Dad to call me in sick, occasionally, and my mom never even knew it. I have no regrets. Those were the best days of my life. And yes,I still graduated with my class. LOL
Both "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Breakfast Club" are John Hughes films. But there's such a contrast in the vice principals 'in charge' of the students in these two films. Both are antagonists, but Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" gets a more sympathetic understanding and path to redemption (via the janitor) than Ed Rooney in "Ferris Bueller" (if only he had listened to the secretary). Please note: Ferris's sister is played by Jennifer Grey (daughter of Joel Grey, Tony & Oscar winner for the role of the MC in "Cabaret" on Broadway and in film). Jennifer Grey also played 'Baby' in "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze ""Nobody puts Baby in the corner." I so love you guys doing analysis on films; so much common sense and so insightful. Please, never stop! ❣
I grew up watching this I'm 51 now and still love this movie its a blast they don't make movies like this but there are a few . His sister ( Actor ) played a great part in this movie .
I watched this movie for the first time as a kid a day or two after surgery, with stitches in my lower belly. When the car enters from top of frame, with the Star Wars theme playing I laughed my ass off and it was incredibly painful but I couldn't stop.
I loved this movie when it came out. When my mother died about 12 years ago, my sister and brother-in-law who hadn't seen me in a number of years were sympathetic toward what I was going through (don't ask), and went on a walmart shopping spree, getting me things to try to make me feel better. They got me a number of movies (confession: from time to time I will _still_ fire up "Facing the Giants" when I feel like I'm losing it)... including 2 copies of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (apparently they had each picked it out w/o telling the other). I still have them.
Alan Ruck is now playing Connor on Succession. He also had a quite ironic role as an emotionally aloof, materialistic father in the Netflix remake of One Day at a Time.
There is absolutely no way that Ferris did what he did within the time frame of the movie. Thus, this entire movie occurs in Cameron's head as a fever dream.
Great reaction from you guys. Hearing you laugh so hard reminded of the first time I saw this in the theater. This movie and the first Ghostbusters are two movies from the eighties that I remember the audience laughing so hard. I've seen this movie countless times since and it's so great to watch along with people who've never seen it. Laughter is contagious. Thank you for reacting to this great film.
Somebody should do a highlight reel of Curtis’s most interesting Patreon/Subscribe threats with a bonus reel dedicated to him scamming on all our moms. 😂
One "joke" in this movie was Ferris complaining about getting a computer instead of a car... That's a call back to 'Wargames" where he was a hacker with a computer that (at the time) probably cost as much as a recent model 'economy' car.
Charlie Sheen went without sleep for 3 days so he could look like he hadn't slept for 3 days. This is a classic movie, I still see people wearing the "Save Ferris" t-shirts.
Your guy's reaction was golden As a native of Chicago, I love this movie and all it's 80's charm. One of the best movies to showcase the windy city in a upbeat comedic fashion. And not to mention the fourth wall breaks.
I missed a lot of high school. My mom knew I was faking it; she knew... but she also knew the real reason I felt "sick", and I would miss an entire week sometimes. (the reason: my highschool had 400 students; I had 399 bullies threatening, belittling, and at times physically assaulting me. Death threats in my locker. Half a dozen welts on my head after a day's worth of 'biffing'... I learned to walk with my eyes on the floor ahead of me to avoid the eye contact that would most likely result in belittlement or assault) Ferris Bueller was my hero the instant I saw him.
So happy I'm an 80s kid!!! We all had a Ferris in our class, and we loved them! The director, John Hughes, was the master of 80s teenagers. His movies were great and true to 80s kids. (RIP John Hughes - we miss you and how you represented us when we were teens in the 80s. TY!)
I think it's NOT just that Ferris faked sick to have a good time. Ferris faked sick to give Cameron a good day. He points out how Cameron will be alone the next year. I've seen people get mad at Ferris cause he "get's away with things" but Ferris is charming and you can see at his school that everybody loved him across many cliques. This is one of several 80s teen comedy movies that have this underlying narrative of parents, abuse, parents that don't love them. Ally Sheedy's character in Breakfast Club (same director: John Hughes) is similar to Cameron in that her parents don't care about her. These are children. I'd love to be a hard ass but you can't with kids. It may sound soft but kids need parental love.
You definitely need to check the Hangover Trilogy, those movies y'all are gonna freaking love lol one of the most legendary comedy's I've seen period .
Pretty in Pink should be the next one. It came out the same year as this and has a great soundtrack. Matthew Broderick’s one great movie - except for the time he played Simba
This movie is relatable through any of the main characters - Ferris, Cameron, Sloane or Jeannie - to anyone who went to high school. Even Mr. Rooney is relatable to anyone who is a school administrator (or teacher) who has to deal with a kid like Ferris who underminds his/her authority while trying to run the school or classroom. That said, for me, Grace steals the movie. She's on top of everything, she knows all about everyone, and she tries to keep Rooney from wasting time chasing Ferris, rather than doing his job of maintaining order for the entire student body. Her matter-of-fact delivery of each of her lines is hilarious, ie. "He makes you look like an ass is what he does" kills me every single time I hear it.

I could talk about my love for the film for hours all day long, and I can't wait to see your hilarious reaction & commentary! I definitely needed this tonight!
Y’all’s intros are so unhinged it cracks me up
Great reaction 👍
Appreciate that man :)
We were allowed 4 unexcused absences every 9 weeks, and I've often wondered if people noticed that through junior high and especially high school I was absent _the last four Fridays of every 9 weeks._ My mom would call me in sick and we'd go shopping and have lunch and see a movie or something. lol
I was also in high school when the HP movies started coming out, and she pulled me out of school the day that Chamber of Secrets came out my senior year. 😂
The actor who played Cameron was also in Speed. He was one of the passengers on the bus.
This is one my favorite comedy movies of all time. I can remember so many moments like the back of my hand.
I always forget how much I love these movies until I watch someone watching them for the first time
Fun fact. The city was doing the parade and in the middle of it, they asked to join and film
@@AnnaB22 Saw how this was done in the Broadway musical Sunday in the Park With George.
How could you cut out the infamous roll call bueller bueller bueller...
I still use the " Bueller, Bueller" chant when know one acknowledges me after I ask a question.
LOL. 😂
@MrParkerman6 you might want to try that one more time...
@@MrParkerman6 The Spelling Police disagree.
Cameron's line
"I'm dying."
Is one of my favorite deliveries ever.
Jennifer Grey also played 'Baby' in "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze ""Nobody puts Baby in the corner."
I so love you guys doing analysis on films; so much common sense and so insightful.
Please, never stop!
❣
I was 15 when this came out. I think we pretty much only spoke in quotes from this movie through the rest of high school.
I love how excited these guys get over food in movies
PIZZZAAAAA!!!!!
Food is life, pizza is love
I grew up watching this I'm 51 now and still love this movie its a blast they don't make movies like this but there are a few . His sister ( Actor ) played a great part in this movie .
This movie was probably one of the first movies to have an after credits scene.
I watched this movie for the first time as a kid a day or two after surgery, with stitches in my lower belly. When the car enters from top of frame, with the Star Wars theme playing I laughed my ass off and it was incredibly painful but I couldn't stop.
It’s bizarre irony that Rooney is such a creep in this movie and the actor that played him got busted for being a creep.
I have drunkenly introduced myself to strangers as Abe Froman. I was living in Chicago at the time, amusingly, but nobody ever picked up on anything.
And he was also on the late-90s sitcom Spin City
There is absolutely no way that Ferris did what he did within the time frame of the movie.
Thus, this entire movie occurs in Cameron's head as a fever dream.
This movie is an absolute classic and filled with great lines and quotes. It’s a must see movie and I’m so glad you both enjoyed it.
The final scene has also done by Deadpool in his movie debut.
Deadpool - "Chica chicaaaaaa!!!!"
Man, the most iconic scene in this movie was that run home trying to beat his parents home, lol. Family guy even redid it.
This is such a popular classic, I always enjoy watching it no matter how many times.
Good movie and reaction. I find it interesting how the 80s has so many teen movies compared to now.
Another absolutely perfect movie with the best reactors on RUclips!
They should watch "16 candles." Another great teen movie from the 80s.
Somebody should do a highlight reel of Curtis’s most interesting Patreon/Subscribe threats with a bonus reel dedicated to him scamming on all our moms. 😂
Did you recognize the sister was in Dirty Dancing? "Nobody puts Baby in the corner."
When he picks up his girlfriend and what he's wearing.....Hey it's Inspector Gadget lol
There is a theory that Cameron is actually the main character, and Ferris is a figment of his imagination. It's fun to think of that when watching it.
So, would Ferris be sort of like Cameron’s Tyler Durden? Not to quite that extreme, but, you know.
@@0okamino essentially, yes.
One "joke" in this movie was Ferris complaining about getting a computer instead of a car...
That's a call back to 'Wargames" where he was a hacker with a computer that (at the time) probably cost as much as a recent model 'economy' car.
Thanks guys! Another good 80's movie with Broderick is his first big role in "WarGames" (1984). Ed Helms has a podcast about it: "SNAFU".
Cool reaction and I really like how you guys explained a lot of what the film was about at the end. I wish I enjoyed things more back in those days
Cameron / Alan Ruck is currently in HBO’s Succession
Charlie Sheen went without sleep for 3 days so he could look like he hadn't slept for 3 days.
This is a classic movie, I still see people wearing the "Save Ferris" t-shirts.
Your guy's reaction was golden
As a native of Chicago, I love this movie and all it's 80's charm.
I learned to walk with my eyes on the floor ahead of me to avoid the eye contact that would most likely result in belittlement or assault)
Ferris Bueller was my hero the instant I saw him.
Laugh all you want, but driving backwards was a way to reduce the odometer in older cars. Not all of them unfortunately.
The lesson here is that skipping school is harmless.
This song is tasty.
It's The English Beat - March of the Swivelheads. John Hughes chose great songs for all his movies.
I think it’s also worth noting that the bands General Public and Fine Young Cannibals came out of The English Beat splitting up.
Y’all have a great contagious laugh
Love the reactions to these classics
You definitely need to check the Hangover Trilogy, those movies y'all are gonna freaking love lol one of the most legendary comedy's I've seen period .
I love their reaction to a beloved movie from my teenage years.
I’ve never been this early for a video! I’m gonna enjoy this one and it’s one of my favorite movies.
I just thought of a similarity between Ferris and the Fonz. They both played the cool kid and grew up to play primarily nerds.
The after credits scene was parodied by Deadpool lol
Pretty in Pink should be the next one. It came out the same year as this and has a great soundtrack. Matthew Broderick’s one great movie - except for the time he played Simba
It’s just one of those movies that when you watch it, it never disappoints 😎
Back in the 80s, in some schools, you could only miss a certain number of days and pass. I knew the exact number lol.
This movie is just good vibes all around.
One of my favorite movies of all time. So much nostalgia!! You guys freakn rock!! ❤ Great reaction as always octokrol
