Been a bit since this went up, but I also wanted to chime in and thank you for this. I just recently got back into the game and w/o thinking deleted my old saves/worlds to avoid any compatibility issues, as I'd not played since just after launch. At first I didn't think much of it, as I'd not really progressed far into it, but then I remembered I could have saved the world seed code to reuse. This oversite was kinda eating at me until now. While I'd not gotten far, I did have fond memories of the seed and this video helped me recover them. Cheers and thanks again!
Thanks a lot man, I got a new PC and didn't realize I had to move my save/character to the cloud. Logged into a fresh world with my character and was devastated, but this worked. Thanks again.
Thanks but it didn't help, my first time playing this game, 70 hours in 2 weeks and all my progress lost except for a small hut i built early game, ggs
Can't thank you enough for this. After the game unexpectedly crashed and dumped HUNDREDS of hours in the trash, I was ready to send my computer out the window. My backup was a bit older so I'm still missing dozens of hours of progress but knowing this will keep me from swearing off the game for good. This game really knows how to deliver unthought levels of devastation in regular play but I never expected to be sent back to day 1 with every single construct and chest full of goods to be wiped from existence. Really hope they get a handle on that.
it didnt work. whatever happened messed up that file as well somehow. I lost 803 hours of work, and it cant be recovered. I think I will quit vid games entirely. im not wasting one more min of my life on this crap.
Same thing happened to me and a friend few hours ago, after game froze we logged in and whole world was reset to day 1 just map we discovered and markers we created were still there, everything we built every item we stored into chests disapeared and we were unsucesful with restoring it, tried everything there was with the .old and shit nothing worked...
I was literally trying to copy a world (with buildings) last night and was having a hard time figuring it out. Could probably still use a little video😏
i have a dedicated server which i deleted by mistake thinking it said rename lost alot of stuff alot anways i followed them steps and the world came back except the map had a new fog of war except a small portion around the spawn point which i had my build and allthat stuff nothing was there except the small portion of the spawn area fog was missing is there any difference on how you do this with a steam dedicated server and a regular valheim world? all that stuff sure is missed lol...thanks really good video btw yous the boss of bosses
Speaking of deleted worlds. G-Portal just deleted ours. While on vacation, my card was lost. They tried to charge and it failed. They gave 5 days to recover the account before complete deletion. 3 of the 5 days were the Memorial Day weekend. You should do a video of how to backup your files from there if you are going to suggest them as a host. I will no longer use them. I have backups, but a 5 day retention policy is absurd. For those who don't know how to backup from FTP, any vacation longer than 5 days could see their servers deleted. Buyer beware!
@@Kysen unfortunately they won't. They didn't even apologize and said 5 days was "ample time". Even over the holiday.... Show your viewers how to backup the files hosted there. I would love to but I don't have the reach you have.

Both my character and worlds folders are empty except for the steam_autocloud.vdf. Hopefully everything will be back eventually.

I can't speak for GPortal on this matter but I'm sure they will do everything they can to help you if you contact them

I accidentally deleted my files and overwrote them trying to create a dedicated server. Lost hundreds of hours and cannot recover. Oh well 🤷♂

You can download the world files. If you no longer have access to the server, ask your server host to do it for you
How do you do this for Xbox? I recently got sent back to day 1 and tried to recover my old games but it keeps bringing me back to day 1.
The more interesting question: "how to restore a savegame after your SSD has died?" ;-)
