I was the headwriter for the last 3 1/2 years of Johnny. This episode brings back a lot of memories. And even some jokes I don't remember. It was a fun ride.

Fantastic talents, both of them! God they played off of one another beautifully. They don't come like that anymore. Their timing was impecable; all Ed needed to do was tap those envelopes and Johnny would give one of those great looks! So subtle, so great. I miss the real Tonight Show so very much. Great times!!!

There was a Carnac episode where he bombed so badly, he got down on his hands and knees, and crawled through that door that was behind him. I wish I could find that one. .

He was great and we won't see the likes of him again, but I bet Mr. Carson learned well from Groucho Marx on "You Bet Your Life." Groucho could wind up an audience tighter than a two dollar clock with a wilting look. Check the clips on RUclips. Some of them are priceless as are the Carson reruns.

One of the attractive things about Johnny was his deep resonate voice which was good for night time tv. No late night host today could look into the camera and get laughs like Johnny did.
I grew up watching this show, always great guests, Ed Macmahon pitching ALPO dog food. Miss those times. Carnac was hilarious. Let's not forget Carol Wayne the Matinee lady.
Although I was fairly young when Johnny was in his prime...MY “barometer” on his greatness, echos many of the same sentiments all of you have shared, & that is....NO ONE has ever been able to measure up to him, & the bar he set with his nonpareil talent. If you all recall, the only one to ever come reasonably close to him was Arsenio Hall. BUT, this occurred when Johnny’s retirement was imminent. Probably one of the most complex (& complicated) superstar entertainers to ever exist. But no one can ever question his genius. We will ALL pass away before there is even the slightest chance of anyone being able to replicate Johnny and the master that he was at his craft!
Johnny was at the top of his game the first time he hosted, and only got better until the night he retired. The Ed Ames bit with the ax? "I didn't even know you were Jewish!" (Ames is). Carson ripped great one-liner after great one-liner, cracked Ames up so much that he was almost on the floor. There will never be another Carson.
As of 09/01/20 it's 138 dislikes. They are probably young liberals who are offended by his jokes while eating Tide Pods for breakfast on Saturday mornings while trolling on RUclips and Facebook. 😂
Being from El Paso this is true on many Fridays each year. I once saw a Hispanic quarterback loft a long pass twenty yards down field about seven feet off the ground. He overthrew his receiver by five feet. On another occasion I saw an offensive lineman eating a burrito pulled from his pants during a timeout. I'm not saying short, plump Hispanic players are fat, but the football teams are hard pressed to beat the circus midgits when they come to town. Got to love the three ring act during halftime. Completely different kind of humor too- never try to downplay Conan or Letterman as they were perfect for their Late Night shows and always respected Johnny. Plus those that have followed along know that Conan was shafted big time by NBC which some old folks still refuse to understand. Dave and Conan were your college buddies with bizarre random humor that would try anything. Hilarious watching Dave crush things in a press or drop objects from fire towers, or Conan creating mascot dunking contests and a dog puppet roasting everything. Plus both were gold in their live remotes. I am old enough to have seen Johnny in the 80s and thankful for it but many of us resonate with the other kinds of late night skits that followed. Hell, it’s still hard to believe we’re already a few years past Dave’s last show.

The Carnac skits and the Mighty Carson Art Players were always funny, but Johnny was at his best when talking to guests. He was very secure in his job and didn’t insist that every guest be a cheesy celebrity. He would have regular people that won some obscure contest from around the country. I remember seeing an old fella that had the hiccups for decades. They weren’t audible anymore, but he would have a periodic break in his speach. He told of family and friends had spent years trying to scare him out of them! Another person was invited on with a bunch of random items they had found in chicken craws. After he quit, the successors never took a break from celebrities to the point, I think the country came to realize that there were way more of them than talent available.
I know I’m Late with a comment but Carson was a phenomenal quick comedian. I remember when I would watch him in daytime TV on Who Do You Trust and his rapid humor was hilarious.

It's just that, after this appearance from him on the Feb. 19, 1992 edition, that the last 3 months were probably going to be too hectic and loaded to bring out Carnac once again. If you think about it, Johnny and all the show's cast and staff were also doing one interview after another as they were preparing to conclude festivities on May 22 that year, and Johnny, Ed, and Fred De Cordova probably all agreed that Feb. 19, 1992 was the best chance to send Carnac off to his destiny forever. For the record, the interview guests for the Feb. 19, 1992 edition of TTSSJC were Jim Fowler and Dudley Moore, with musical performance guest Louie Bellson rounding things out for that night. =P

Guessing this was shortly following Johnny's announcement that he would be stepping down from his hosting duties. This was a rough one.

@@marcpower4167 No....they probably knew that this was the end of Carnac. It's just that, after this appearance from him on the Feb. 19, 1992 edition, that the last 3 months were probably going to be too hectic and loaded to bring out Carnac once again.
If you think about it, Johnny and all the show's cast and staff were also doing one interview after another as they were preparing to conclude festivities on May 22 that year, and Johnny, Ed, and Fred De Cordova probably all agreed that Feb. 19, 1992 was the best chance to send Carnac off to his destiny forever.
For the record, the interview guests for the Feb. 19, 1992 edition of TTSSJC were Jim Fowler and Dudley Moore, with musical performance guest Louie Bellson rounding things out for that night.
