I think ppl make this too complicated. Just take the most important criteria and you have your goat. The most important criteria are simple: nr of slams, nr of masters, nr of year end finals, total nr if tournament wins, nr of weeks at nr 1, head to head against the other goat candidates, all roundness AND specialty wins concerning underground you play on. That’s it. And i think we all know who is going to come out of it as the goat. The problem is most ppl dont like that winner since they have other favourites.

I'm a Roger fan, but I think Novak is the greatest ever. He's proven that he's the mentally toughest of the Big 3 in the biggest moments. Personally I crowned him the goat after the AO 2012 after he outlasted Rafa in 6 hours on one day fewer rest after a 5 hour semi match against Murray. Since he reached his prime in 2011, Novak vs. Rafa isn't even a discussion. Novak is clearly better. Roger vs. Novak is a bit more complicated because their primes never overlapped. But Novak proved to be tougher at the USO 2010, 2011, and 2015 and Wimbledon 2014, 2015, 2019. I think Roger is still the most skilled and most beautiful player ever, but Novak is better at winning a tennis match.

Federer squandered many opportunities between 2012-2016, which was a critical period for him. He was unwilling to change his game style and that cost him many titles. these 3 players are the best, today. the reason is fairly simple - with hard work, their skills are best adapted to the game, today. do i think they would beat laver and rosewall ? NO. do i think they would beat connors, borg and mcenroe ? NO.
do i think any of these 5 guys would beat today's 3 ? NO.
and that is not contradictory. because the game of tennis is not the same. there is no sport that i can think of, in which the equipment has changed that drastically. there is absolutely no comparison in rackets. mcenroe would not do as good today, because playing at the net has become way less important. mcenroe did not have good ground strokes. he had to win at the net. he was the absolutely best net player there ever was. today's players dont play at the net much. i saw mcenroe playing doubles on the net with top players, who were 30 years younger. mac was still the best player out there. all 5 of these players were different, but they grew up when tennis was a particular style of game. that style has changed a lot, today.
the skillset needed to win is simply different. and the athletes who had those best skillsets were the best in their time.
players talk about slams, today. they werent nearly as important back then. before the open era, professionals couldnt even play in them. and the french and australian had nowhere near the recognition that the other 2 had. and even wimbledon and the us open had nowhere near the importance that a full season had. and the end of year tournament. rosewall beat laver in the first 2 wct championships - that had way more importance than wimbledon - not even close. so even the goals are different.
yet most people want to compare the two using the yardsticks of today. like most things in life, younger people dont have enough experience to bring any sort of good rational points to the discussion. that may sound cruel, but it is also the truth.

Wow, I must say that this is the best post I have ever read about the GOAT discussion. I totally agree with you, but I could not put it down in words as good as you did. Björn Borg for example only attended the Australian Open once. It took much longer to fly to Australia at that time and the tournament was not seen as an important tournament. Even without playing in Australia, Björn Borg won 11 Grand Slams before he turned 26. If he would have had a time machine and got to know that the number of Grand Slams, Australian Open included, would be the most important number in the future and that Federer , Nadal and Djokovic won 20 times (and perhaps more) , then perhaps he would have competed in Australian Open many times and he may have continued to play more years. Maybe he also could have reached 20 Grand Slams.

Wimbledon court has slowed down over the years. Grass always used to be much faster than clay but in modern day all courts are more or less the same. That is why we don't see serve and volley players anymore. The slowness of the grass in Wimbledon has neutralised the big servers.
Sampras at his peak would be difficult to beat on the old Wimbledon grass which was much faster than what it is today.
But one fact can never be debated that across all generations Rafael Nadal is the best player on clay ever.

  • @alexandertkeith3541
    @alexandertkeith3541 3 года назад +7

It's definitely a combination of factors. I would be wary of going by head to heads though, as sometimes you can have a magnificent player whose game just happens not to match up very well with a rival of equal or lesser ability - like a boogeyman type thing. Surfaces also makes a huge difference. Federer and Djokovic don't stand a chance against Nadal on clay, Nadal doesn't stand a chance against Federer on indoor hard court and often not on grass either, and Djokovic always beats them both on grass. Each has their favourite tournaments too - Nadal dominates the French, Djokovic dominates the Australian Open and Federer Wimbledon. I agree with Andy Roddick that you have to look at a player's overall domination of everybody else on the tour over 10, 15, 20 years when asking who the GOAT is. What makes Federer, Nadal and Djokovic stand out is that they've won (almost) every significant tournament.
Federer - all 4 slams, tour finals, 8/10 Masters, Davis Cup (missing the Olympic Gold)
Nadal - all 4 slams, 7/10 Masters, Davis Cup, Olympic Gold (missing the Tour Finals)
Djokovic - all 4 slams, 9/10 Masters, Davis Cup, Tour Finals (missing the Olympic Gold)
When you have 3 guys who are close to a 'clean sweep' of the big tournaments, then they all deserve to be in the conversation. You can make a case for any of them. Rafa has won the joint most slams but also played in the least grand slam tournaments of the 3, which begs the question, how many WOULD HE have won without injuries? Federer has spent the most weeks at no.1, won the join most slams and is arguably the most versatile when it comes to surfaces (he's got the most even distribution of wins across the slams and is easily the second best clay court player of all time, he just always met Nadal in the French Open Final and always lost). Djokovic has a positive head to head against both Federer and Nadal and has won 17 slams with two other 'goats' to contend with - while Rafa and Roger won lots of slams before the emergence of the big 3 era. Djokovic's run from 2011-2016 arguably surpasses Federer's from 2004-2009 and Nadal's from 2008-2013.
It's basically very close. I think all 3 are well capable of winning more slams - unless Thiem can somehow hold them off by himself (he won't). Of course, if one soars ahead in terms of slams won (likely Rafa), that makes a big difference in the debate. But one thing's for sure - all 3 would be capable of hitting 35-40 grand slams had they not met each other in the same era - because nobody else on the tour has stood much of a chance. As fans, we're spoilt rotten just being able to watch them and tennis will never be the same again when they're no longer playing.

This one became simple for me: Tennis is played on clay, slow hardcourts, fast hardcourts, grass and indoor carpet. So the Greatest Player will obv have more success if his best surface has more major tournaments on it:
Rafa is clearly the best ever on clay, tho it's great when Novak challenges him on it.
Roger is the best ever on grass and fast surfaces, tho Novak has really challenged him on it.
Novak is clearly the best ever on the mid speed courts, while having some epic matches there with Roger and Rafa.
At the moment, more of the tennis year is played on Novak's surfaces. If that balance would've changed in favor of Roger's or Rafa's surfaces, they would've benefited (with extra confidence a huge factor too).
So well done to each of them for being the best ever at his own "speed of tennis" - while providing brilliant competition on all.
(The players from other eras don't compare, since they never pushed each other to as great heights as these 3 do. Roger with a wooden racquet would even has beaten the old Laver by being as skilled, but superiority in size helping him out on all shots)

Novak is my favorite: such brilliant returning has brought much life into a game usually dominated by service holds...

I really hope he could steal one more Wimbledon from Djoker.
They're all 3 really great people, great leaders for the wellbeing of tennis, and Rafa's forehand and Novak's backhand have been from another planet.
Novak will surely have the best stats by the end, if nothing drastic happens. And Rafa and Roger will gracefully appreciate him surpassing them: they were his on-court teachers 2003-10 after all.

Djokovic I think is right when pointing out that those records are not by themselves good criteria to determine the goat thing. Something I'm not really sure about is saying Federer belongs to the same generation as Rafa and Nole based on the fact that they have shared the court for many years. As known, Federer and Agassi played plenty of times since 1998 until 2005, but surely no one would say they are from the same generation (not even back-to-back generations). Generations I think are meant to be considered in terms of age of the player and year when turned pro. Federer is a late 90s' player, 5 years older than Nadal and 6 years older than Djokovic. No wonder why since the last part of 2012 until Murray in 2016, only Djokovic and Nadal held #1. Federer's age makes him be a 2000s' player, but both Nadal and Djokovic are 2010s' players (regardless their achievements in the previous decade). I mean: obviously it is not the same having a 20 y/o Nole facing a 26 y/o Roger, and then a 28 y/o Nole facing a 34 y/o Roger (with Nadal and Djokovic obviously we can say they absolutely are from the very same generation); I do think that despite some ups and downs in level for injuries, motivation, mental issues, sickness, etc., in general and in the long run, they have all become better players with time (even they usually claim to have become better players due to facing each other so many times). however, in order to display the best tennis you need, not only technique, mind-set and experience, but also physicality in general. Once I heard an Argentinian former football player saying something I think synthesizes that (not literal, but something like): It is a shame that, very commonly, in sports the moment of your career when you are your best version as a player does not coincide with the moment you have your best physical form.

@@thedoctor8 so as per your logic age is the factor. But then I didn't see Roger dominating the world tennis from the age of 31-34 the way novak has done in the past 3 years. Roger was also 31 to 34 yrs old at some point of time right? I didn't see him winning at least 2 grand slams a year the way novak is doing right now. Because when Roger was in his 30s, it was novak's decade. Roger had 17 titles till 2012 and Novak had 4. Now they have 20 and 19 respectively. Novak just ate up second half of Roger's prime. Even though we have to give Roger credit for his last 3 titles, they were impressive. But the truth is age had nothing to do with head to head. In fact it's just hypothetical thinking since there is no proof. On straight facts, without being biased, Novak is the GOAT. I am not saying you have to believe that, you can say Roger is the goat it's upto you
But saying Roger would have a better h2h if he was younger makes no sense
Since he was not doing the thing at 34 yrs age what novak is doing at 34

I absolutely love all three players but some of the comments from Fed fans about Novak beating Fed mainly outside of Federer’s prime years... are you forgetting Nadal completely obliterated Fed on the first half of their careers and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that Fed was able to beat Nadal more often? Fed, to me, actually got better in his 30s. You can’t have it both ways.

Dude, novak is the goat because he dominated the most competitive era in tennis, thats simple, stop complicating. That argument about nadal beating fed in his prime makes no sense, there is something called a bad matchup, only because player A beats player C and Player B beats Player A doesnt mean Player B would beat player C, thats literally elementary school math logic.

To that extent, it is an incident that arose from this people, who did not pay attention to the difficulties, to the problems, which are always present in front of every person.
No, he found and paved the way, his anthological and epic story, by honestly soaking thousands and thousands of liters of sweat.
The incident is because he started, from the smallest, without privileges, without support, without relief, without any possibility to bypass and skip something.
No, no privileges, life, from the conditions in which we all lived, including him, the bombing, and all the difficult situation in the country, after that, to sports, right at the beginning of his professional career, the best tennis player in the world Federer was waiting for him, and the one who pleads for that place Nadal.
      Right in your head!
He did not bend, he did not avoid, he faced from his early youth with all the life circumstances, which stretched him, to receive blows and absorb them today. To be better every day, not a stubborn Balkan man, full of money, he does not work is, progressing.
He is not an arrogant simpleton, but a family man.
He is not a stupid gedza, but an eloquent and educated gentleman.
He is not a greedy and arrogant, insensitive rich man, but. is dedicated to man and rejoices when he helps, humane in his essence.

Why Rafael is the GOAT ????
Considering the fact that majority of major tennis events are played on courts unfavorable to Rafael and very favorable to Djoko n FED, Rafael is indisputably the GOAT. See stats: last 15 to 16 years
    [ ] SLAMS (1 CLAY, 2 HARD, 1 GRASS each year)
Favorable court Rafa 15 nos. In 15 yrs
Favorable court Djoko 45 in 15 years
Favorable court FED 45 in 15 years
Observation : If slams were 2 Clay each year, imagine Rafael count of Slam wins.
    [ ] ATP FINALS (last 16 years)
    1 HARD INDOORS
Favorable court Rafa 0 of 16 attempts
Favorable court Djoko 16 of 16 attempts
Favorable court FED 16 of 16 attempts
Observation: if alternated between Clay and Hard every year, meaning 8 on Clay and 8 on Harcourt in last 16 years, then Rafa would win atleast 6 out of the 8 Clay events here given his history on Clay. The other would be shared equally by FED and Djoko at 4 each
    [ ] ATP 1000
    3 CLAY
    5 HARD
    1 HARD INDOOR
    Opportunities:
Favorable courts Rafa 45 nos. In 15 yrs
Favorable courts Djoko 90 in 15 years
Favorable courts FED 90 in 15 years
Observation: FED and Djoko play double the number of ATP events on favorable courts each year. if 5 ATP 1000 Clay events were held each year, Rafael wins many many more MASTERS but now.
[ ] ATP 500 (total 13 nos. Out of which only 3 are clay)
    3 CLAY
    5 HARD
    3 HARD INDOOR
    2 GRASS
Observation: Obvious to see the huge disadvantage to Rafael. Only 3 out of 13 each year on his favored court's while FED and Djoko get get 11 opportunities each year on their Favorable court's.
Final word: so despite playing 1/4th times on Favorable court's, Rafael still has 20 slams while FED and Djoko playing on 3/4 times each on Favorable court's, they have 20 and 18 respectively.
ATP FINALS : Zero opportunities to Rafael since held on Hard and that too indoors. If half events on Clay, Rafael wins 6 to 8 nos easily.
ATP MASTERS: Huge disadvantage to Rafa again with only 3 of 9 on Clay and 6 of 9 Favorable to Djoko and FED.
RAFA is the GOAT unquestionably and indisputably.

Look folks , Tennis is the toughest sport to pick the undisputed / all around GOAT . All 3 players have won all 4 Major Slams , have all won 3 of the 4 Slams multiple times , and have been Number One player for weeks at a time . How do you pick one GOAT player from these 3 players really ?
Rodger is the GOAT of Grass
Rafa is the GOAT of Clay
Novak is the GOAT of Hard Courts
I mean Rodger has a case overall , but he has struggled against Rafa and Novak on Clay and Hard Courts Head To Head over the last decade .
Rafa has a case dominating the French Open 13 times over the last 16 years . That means only 3 other players have won that event . Federer / Wawrinka / Djokovich . Otherwise Rafa is 13 - 0 in that event , which is unheard of .
Djokovic has won the Head to head matches against Rodger and Rafa . Novak is the only player ever to hold all 4 Slams . 2 Slams in the end of one year and 2 Slams in the beginning of the next year simultaneously . He is the only player to have won 3 of the 4 Slams multiple times in separate years .
I just feel Djokovic will be the All Time overall GOAT of Tennis history . He is only 34 . He will get at least 2 to 3 Slams a year for the next 7 years if he plays that long . So when he retires he could have 30 - 35 Slams . Novak is a year younger than Rafa , so the odds for Novak to outlast Rafa overall are good . Rafa could play another 5 years at best , and maybe get about 10 more slams mostly on Clay if his body holds up . Novak is peaking at the right time right now , where as Rodger is 40 yrs old , and wont last much longer . Rodger may peak at about 22 Slams All Time if he's lucky . But realistically there is a chance Rafa and Novak get to 30 Slams a piece when they retire .

For me it's more easy, djokovic is the greatest hard court player no doubt, he's definitely the 2nd or 3rd best clay courter depending on Borg's ranking of all time and he's top 3 on grass. he'll overtake Sampras there and some may even argue he's a better grass courter than Federer due to his unbeaten record Vs him in the finals although I disagree. So him being top 3 on all surfaces, winning every grand slam 2x and being the only player to beat Nadal twice at RG is enough to make him goat and he'll also have the most GS by the end. All he needs is an Olympic gold and he's basically completed tennis lmao.

No the 3 best don't play now. But among the 6,7,8 best, the 3 play now. It is not correct to compare slams when comparing other eras. In other eras speed of court and obligatory amounts of tournaments you had to play, and format of semis and finals etc would make it completely different to compete for slams.
