Secure & Organize Your EDC Tools with DIY Custom Elastics: Perfect For Mini Pouches & Pocket Racks™

- Using the right elastics for securing and organizing your EDC tools can be a game changer for those of us that carry gear every day. This is the second video in what is turning out to be a series about using elastics for EDC. In the first video • After A Year Of Testin... I covered what I've learned after a year of testing different types of bands with Pouches and pocket Racks . In this video I drill down into some very specific designs that are inexpensive and easily make. Elastics for your everyday carry gear are going to be a key component of just about every EDC kit you can put together. They are used in large and mini EDC pouches, tins and pocket organizers. It surprises me that there is little EDC related info on this topic. Hopefully these two videos will help to fill that void.

It took me a while to get these from half a world away (China), but they are a marvel. I'm beyond impressed that you found these. Figuring out how to describe/name them would have been beyond me.The new elastics are a revelation. Thanks for your hard work on this project.
@coreygimbel1314 - Thank you for your post. I'm so glad the new design for the bands is working out for you. I'd love to see how you set it up with your EDC. Thank you again for taking the time to post.
It’s a delight to see the refinements in each iteration.
@PhilippeDoyleGray - On occasion I go back to that first Pocket Rack RUclips video, just to remind me of how far this project has evolved over the past year. ruclips.net/video/bvm2ivZTILs/видео.html . It's been a pretty dramatic evolution, but the underlying concept is still holding up well. Thanks for posting !
Phil, your using my application of elastic shock cordage, using it per location versus as I've used it continuously throughout a rack without availability of the beads. Optionally, you can tie a knot or heat seal the ends together with match or over a stove. I've got to get the beads - good idea for the sliding/center placement bead.
You can also add multiple beads to each band you make, allowing you to tighten the shock cord in multiple locations on a single tool. Can you do a short video on how to heat seal the shock cord? I've been trying too figure that out and can't find anything online. Many thanks for the info and for posting..
Interesting system thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback.
I need to get some of those beads. I have been using a couple pocket racks to organize my belt pouches and love em
So glad that your are enjoying the racks. The beads are really nice and also give you something to hold onto when you want to adjust the bands. Thanks for posting
Ive been using Goody hair ties for many years. I've been playing around with shock cord. Thanks for the info.
You are very welcome. I'm curious to hear what you think on the shack cord after you've tried it out. Enjoy!
Look up local laser or waterjet companies and make the plates out of 304 stainless steel or 6061 Alu in 1mm thickness or so. I would be surprised if it was even cheaper than the 3D printed version.
@micgalovic - Thanks for the post. We've had viewers make them from wood and aluminum. Checkout the photos on the community page for this channel. See: www.youtube.com/@EarthlingEDC/community
Aún estoy impresionado por su genial invento del Pocket Rack. Me encanta. ❤
@willyfermin - Muchas gracias, agradezco sinceramente su apoyo.
new design is cool. I am still a big fan of the silicon rings but I will give this a try!
@TheSac1122 Thanks for posting. The O-rings work just fine, but keep an eye on them for cracks and splits where the silicon might be tearing from friction where the card is coming in contact with the O-Ring. The new elastics have a nylon cover that reduces that friction issue. Enjoy!
@@EarthlingEDC thank you
Great job! Sorry that so many people complain.
@wpherigo1 - Many thanks for your concern. I recognize that everyone watching these video has different perspectives on what I'm doing as well as suggestions and requests. This feedback then allows me to adjust my content and make this channel appealing to more EDC enthusiasts. It's a win win :-)
I'm not for having all that extra bulk on my phone case, but I did think of another idea utilizing the pocket rack that I'd love for you to explore in a future video, should you feel so inclined. My idea is to put two pocket racks together, back to back. You can put whatever you want on the outside faces using your existing band system. But you'd connect the two racks with a hinged opening, either using additional elastics / shock cord or by crossing the tool-holding elastic from one pocket rack to the other. You'll want to "hinge" the entire bottom and probably halfway up the side, and this can be done either horizontally or vertically. The purpose would be to store flat items inside, like cash, a credit card, a "survival" card, a hand warmer, band-aids, a few feet of duct tape, or anything relatively flat. I'm assuming you'd need a closure on the top so things wouldn't fall out. You could even add a hook and loop field inside using sticky backed velcro, for attaching anything that way (or maybe this could form the closure - or you could use small magnets). Anyway, it's just an idea and I don't have time to fiddle with it right now and get it perfect, so you're welcome to take on that project if you like the idea. Many thanks for all the videos and continuing to evolve this concept!
@elisebrown5157 - thanks for taking the time to post your idea. I actually tried something like this in an attempt to make a pocket rack wallet. I may have included it in an earlier video. Might be worth exploring again. I think the issue was that the two 2mm racks were a bit bulky when strapped together with elastics. I might try making a 1mm card and attach them.....Interesting . Thanks again.
@@EarthlingEDC I should have figured you'd already thought of that. I'd still love to see you try some variations, maybe with the different thicknesses of pocket rack (1mm, 1.5mm) to see if there's a sweet spot between too thick and too fragile. I think it would be a great way to carry some EDC that doesn't lend itself well to being strapped in with the bands.
Or cut it from Titanium or aluminum :-)
I don’t wanna have to buy a 3-D printer to make pocket racks for myself
@robertbiddle449 - I don't own one either. Go to bit.ly/EDCELASTICS2 for details on getting one printed for you..
Several of the PCB printing stores also run cheap 3d printing services. Send them the file and a cc number and it'll show up a week later, sourced off a local participating print farm.
It's definitely fun and worth it. I design my own swiss army knife scales and accessories.
Nice!!
I hope you will start selling these soon. I don't have a 3D printer to make any.
Never mind, I bought a 3D printer, lol.
I'll have to keep my eye open for when these launch so I can review one :)
Joe - Thanks for posting. Pocket Racks are an open source 3D printed community driven project. Unlike a single product that is sold by a company, this one keeps evolving as new ideas are introduced by EDC enthusiasts who are contributing to the project. I'm not sure it will ever be done, but I'd encourage you to make one for yourself . You can find instructions here for accessing the free print file and getting one printed: bit.ly/EDCELASTICS2
Thats awesomeness 👌
@bobbymills4476 - Thank you. I sincerely appreciate your feedback !
I'll have to check to see if I have some small guage copper wire to use to pull the bead onto the shock cord. If not, perhaps I could pull it through with dental floss.
@Castleknight Multi strand electrical wire is where I got the piece that I used in the video. If you've got an old extension cord in your junk drawer, it's probably copper multi strand. Fishing line also works well. I don't think that dental floss will work because it's not rigid enough to push through the bead. Thanks for asking.
So in other words... the first method is pointless since I can get literally the same result with less time, effort and money with the second method. Great job 👍
@larshoneytoast722 Thanks for posting - The first method with the white elastic shock cords gives you the ability make custom bands that are specifically designed for the individual EDC tool that you want to mount on a rack. That's actually a big deal. It gives you a MUCH more secure binding for your tools that the one size fits all that you get if you use hair ties alone. Try both :-)
I am not very techie so it may just be me but I don’t see the silicone beads as to where you ordered them from

what program do you use to make your wonderful pdfs?
@TheUnofficialMaker - It's just Google docs. If you have a Google email address, you should also have free access to Google docs as well.
is the STL file for the small pocket rack available now?
@jasper5945 - Thanks for posting. Not yet.
How do I get them online?
@robertbiddle449 - Thank you for your post. See: bit.ly/EDCELASTICS2 for details on where to source the items that appeared in this video.. Enjoy!
Why aren’t you selling the pocket racks?
That is a question that I get often. There are thousands of companies that will 3D print the free STL file for you. Pocket Racks™ come in different versions and are an open source 3D print design, so anyone can print one or customize the design. The only major restriction is that you can't sell them. There is a utility patent pending.
To make one for yourself, go to: www.thingiverse.com/search?q=Pocket+Rack+EDC&page=1 and download any of the six versions that you would like to print. You can then go to a website like printathing.com , or a local 3D printing service in your area and have them make one or more of them for you.
This PDF has more details on sourcing the elastics that are used with them. See: bit.ly/EDCELASTICS2 and the video you just watched shows how to make the elastics bands that are used on the Racks.
You don't need to buy a printer. I don't even own one. I have a friend who prints them for me. I've been looking into printing them for viewers, but I know what it takes to fulfill online orders and support customers who purchase your products. I don't want to get into that unless I can do it well and right now, my spare time is limited to creating these videos. Many thanks for asking..
Thank you for sharing this and continuing to refine it! I’m super excited to see the final form(s) this takes! An awesome idea that you are perfecting, bit by bit!
Thanks ! It's great to be a part of this project and to see how the community is helping it to evolve.
I see that the hairbands are 2mm thick. How long are they? Did I miss something? Is there a standard size?
There is a downloadable PDF in the description for this video. It contains links to all of the items mentioned in the video. Click on the link for the hairbands and it will take you to a page with all of the details about the hairbands. Thanks for asking.
I looked at that and didn’t see how long the bands were.
142mm in diameter. But it does vary a bit between bands.
Why not sell the racks
@benterwellen - Thank you for your post. Right now, I'm enjoying doing these videos. I've done online retail previously and it takes time. For the time being, I'd rather put that time into making these videos. That may change in the future, but that's where I am right now. Many thanks for asking.
What are the dimensions of the pocket rack?
@TeamC4dotcom Thank you for your post - For the Rack featured in this video, the dimensions are 111.8mm X 71.8mm X 2mm You can also just download the 3D STL file from Thingyverse.com . Just do a search for "Pocket Rack EDC" on Thingyverse. There are also other designs there that have been created by the community. Enjoy!
@@EarthlingEDC thank you, sir. I'm going to try and design it for my laser since my 3D printer is in machinery heaven.
How did it come out? Very curious :-)
@@EarthlingEDC I I'm glad you asked because I had forgot to try it. Hadn't been able to get to my laser due to a motorcycle/helicopter/parachute accident. I will try to make time for it today.
I cut it. I guess we can't post photos on here. I'll try to upload it and post the link
These are very well and good. But I have no way to make these nore. do I have the money to get a 3D printer. Why are you not making these for sell the people like us that have no way to make these. Its a very cool idea but if making them is the only way to get one. Then I will never get to have one.
Luckily I have a friend that has a 3D printer and I sent him the PDF instructions that Phil posted online and my friend made me several pocket racks.

Hair bands are great and you can color code with them. They just have a limited strength and lifespan.
That's true and I've found that the elastic shock cord just seems to be stronger and hold tighter.
