Nowadays ppl just use celebrities to draw in more sales. But people like her are hidden gems that makes the movie so much more magical and amazing it's impossible to duplicate ever again.
That voice coach (or director) whoever he is is really on his game. Speaks very professional. His advice encourages on every angle and gives amazing input while never discouraging or degrading with his words. She never takes anything personal she listens to him and delivers like a savage that they knew she was all along. Amazing to watch the team work like this to create such a childhood masterpiece that will always bring joy in peoples lives
Yeah. That voice coach is Howard Ashman. He was a charging force for Disney during the 1980s and 1990s' until he was positive for AIDS in 1989 and shared the news with Alan Menken (one of Howard's best friends) after the awards ceremony for The Little Mermaid in 1989. Sadly he passed away on March 14th, 1991. The last song he wrote was Humiliate The Boy for the film Aladdin. His last song would not make it into Aladdin but in the Broadway Adaptation years after the film's release and Howard's death.
As a clarification, Ashman wrote the lyrics and Menken the music. Disney brought them both on after _Little Shop of Horrors_ became a huge success for them off -Broadway. Their work is widely credited for the Disney Renaissance period of the early 1990's. There's a new documentary on Ashman being released soon, if not already available. The two of them were a brilliant team and Menken's working to update the material for the new _Little Mermaid._
Agreed. Especially in Ashman's last note to Benson where he instructs her to give more intensity but with less emotion. This is what creates the phrasing of probably Jodi Benson's entire origination of the song. Bring to mind the line "what would I give, if I could live, out of these waters.." The way the music is written, the notes on the words "give" and "live" are held out as well as the last syllable of "waters". While singing it that way invokes a traditionally emotional feeling, it comes across as generic and predictable. But with Howard Ashman's voice coaching here, he gently urged Jodi away from this trap by encouraging her to sing it differently than how it was written. Which was well within his right because he co-wrote the song to begin with. He encouraged her to pull back on sustaining the notes on "give" and "live" but to instead apply vocal tension. And then to release into full suspension on the word "waters". It worked. Doing this creates a feeling of tension and immediate release that is very appealing to the listening ear. And she repeats the same technique multiple times throughout this song and the remainder of the film.
Her little giggle is adorable. Seeing this shows just how on their game they were with protecting the delivery of each word! She is hands down the best singing princess!!
I've met Jodi Benson herself at the FANEXPO convention in Toronto, and it was unforgettable, I told her both she and Idina Menzel have the most beautiful voices of all the Disney princesses, I told her "what was Howard Ashman like?" and she told me he was a great men etc. and I also told her that watching this with her and Howard working in that recording session together was absolutely magical, I even got to hug her, it was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life, I will always love The Little Mermaid.
What I love is that Howard had a picture in his mind of what he wanted in the performance and was able to perfectly relay that to Jodi. He didn’t just want a performance. He wanted to hear Jodi-as-Ariel singing. He wanted her to convey a feeling and sing because she had to, because it was too much to keep inside.
Made me cry....her voice is so inbeded in my childhood memories. I was OBSESSED with thus movie...every time i was in a pool i would cross my legs and swim like a mermaid just to see the shadow on the bottom of the pool...magical Times for me ❤❤❤
Me too 😢 seeing Howard Ashman working with Jodi Benson - and knowing his legacy lives on through this movie (and others) made it even more emotional. This movie has always been magical to me.
So pure and innocent. Everything about it. And her pitch and output is miraculously wonderful. Even the greatest singers in the world don’t have it. The microphone is absolutely in love with her and drink with such a thirst every sound that she makes. What a fantastic gift she has, and that’s what made this movie, moving for all ages ❤
Perfectionist Howard Ashman goes over every syllable with Jodi Benson...His passion is infectious. Such a tragedy he was taken from us at such a young age. He never lived to see the lasting impact his work would have.
She delivered!!!! I totally get what he’s saying. Less singy and more emotional talking. And at the end beautiful and big. I used to cry when I was little when she sang “ love to explore that shore aboveeeeee.. I get that!
Incredible talent! So fun to see how they developed this song! It's a classic now... wonder if they had any clue how much of an impact it was going have on the the film and for Disney!?!?!
1:25 The irony in what she was saying whilst comprehending Howard's instruction when two decades later the Little Mermaid would make its way to Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre where the actress, Sierra Boggess, would have to do the opposite and project her voice and belt the song...
I just saw the broadway version and didn’t like it as much, and that’s why. Her cover was fine, but it was definitely lacking the sort of vulnerability in Jodi Benson’s original that Howard Ashman emphasized so much.
HB in 2023 live remake, is self-consciously "performing" to impress, which is a trait of current singers. It's all about her, and not Ariel. Jodi Benson's original portrayal is such a classic, because she sang to express, with no need to be a star. Just Ariel. That's why it is beloved, iconic, and will continue to live beyond it's 30-year-life thus far. HB's cover, like the recent ones from Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, as cool and flashy as they are with their "current" vocal tricks, are so easily forgotten. HB version is like some American Idol, The Voice contestant trying to prove that she should win a contest, or be on top of some top 40s hit song. Yes, it is contemporary, precisely because these new singers are all about vocal effects and riffs and trying to sound cool by oversinging. They're all about the external and how they appear on the surface, as if they are IG posts. Jodi represents not just the 90s, but a true classic storytelling. Singers like her convey far more truth and sincerity that transcends generations. And this is done by just respectfully following the vocal score of the composer (instead of "riffing" it off to pieces), and not having the need to be a star showoff. Just the purity and simplicity of a heart-felt storytelling. That's why the original versions of Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, do not sound outdated, after more than 30 years. That's why they have become the classics. HB's version, like the "modern" version of Arianna and John Legend of Beauty and the Beast, or "A Whole New World" by whoever modern singers sang it, become so easily dated. Their singing is based off of flashy, trendy vocal and music fads that come and then quickly get forgotten. JB's recording of Part of Your World has lived on and is guaranteed to be the only voice of Ariel.JB's recording of Part of Your World has lived on and is guaranteed to be the only voice of Ariel.JB's recording of Part of Your World has lived on and is guaranteed to be the only voice of Ariel.
Homage to the OG Ariel! I will never forget her angelic voice as I have sang along with it for the past 30 some odd years every time I watched the little mermaid or sang this song karaoke. She is now passing the torch to the new generation Ariel, Halle Bailey, who (in my opinion) deserves this honor. Giving us the heart of Ariel again for the new generation and the ones to come. 💙
Her voice sounded too offpitch, intense, and stiff whereas Olivia Newton John can get it nailed naturally without going through intensive pressure that Jodi Benson went through.
I'm guessing this video is recorded from outside the recording booth, so they're playing the backing track out loud outside the booth, but only in her headphones inside the booth
Who’s the one coaching? I was listening to this song today with my kids and was really picking up on the phrasing that Jodie sings in that song, and it’s funny to see the intention, that guys great.
If you can, try checking out the demo versions of some of the songs. You can find them on Spotify under the restored TLM soundtrack. Howard does the singing and he really acts out each number! It's really wonderful to hear the process. The actors truly captured the vision he laid out.
Howard Ashman. He sadly passed away on March 14th, 1991 when 2 films he was working on were in production those being Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. Aladdin only kept 3 songs Howard made Friend Like Me, Prince Ali, and Arabian Nights.

Exactly actually voice actors aren't used in animated films anymore just tv animation
Truer words have never been spoken
Yup. And if they can’t sing or hit certain notes? Just SLATHER it in auto tune. Who cares how weird and robotic it starts sounding? 🙄
@@galleryofrogues Well thankfully Halle can hit the notes even higher,

She was perfect for the part.

That guy had a vision and knew how to direct her. Bravo to him for making an amazing performer deliver something so perfect.
Howard Ashman had a great vision for writing and directing songs.
This is basically the scene that cemented the movie as a timeless classic.

The late Howard Ashman. Surprising what I read in the book on how he coached Jodi Benson.
Her little giggle is adorable. Seeing this shows just how on their game they were with protecting the delivery of each word! She is hands down the best singing princess!!
Naw...Lea Solonga is still the best princess singer. She says Mulan (Mulan) and Jasmine (Aladdin)
@@808G8GT she’s awesome but Judy Kuhn gotta get recognition too for voicing Pocahontas
She truly has an amazing voice, just like what Eric said.
I don't give a hoot how old I get, Ariel will always be my favorite princess. Jodi Benson is amazing. I love her

Watching Howard Ashman work is insane. The man was a genius.
He left us to soon.

He’s every bit an artist as she is.

She has the perfect Disney voice, absolutely flawless and iconic! ❤
Her initial audition was solely her voice; no wonder she got it! She was perfect.
Howard is just amazing... Such a talent that we will probably never see again...
I still cry at this song......decades later.
Even in this behind the scenes footage, Jodi sings like an angel!
Yo I just got goosebumps just now. Going to be euphoria hearing her vocalize in person.
She sings so beautiful
Wow Jodi Benson is good at singing 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
Such a beautiful voice!
Absolutely.
She was and is "Ariel" 😘 My favorite Disney princess!
Power play of his that the first take ‘just wasn’t there’ and to ‘really feel it next time.’ She’s AMAZING. ❤
Good lord, is her voice beautiful. And she STILL has that voice today!
"Not there yet" - uh what you talking about, sounded damn great to me 😅
would love to see poor unfortunate souls :).
I forgot that back then the singers had to deliver such solid takes each time because they couldn't mix the way they can now.
OMG :""") EVERYTIME I SEE MY CHILDHOOD SINGER/CHARACTER UGH I STILL HAVE MY VHS TAPES :""""")
me too
I love her voice and how she personifies Ariel
What a voice ! So beautiful and natural ❤
So childlike God Bless her Soul Happy Days she brought to us all ❤
Her voice is magical, maybe it's nostalgia but not many singers nowadays don't move me like she does
It’s so amazing how this one song changed so many peoples lives.

I would like to see the recording of hee vocals. The scene when ariel gives her voice to ursula, that would awesome!
She’s an angel
This song saved Disney Animation.
The little laugh at 1:41, should be the one included in the final track. It really captured Ariel in that tiny moment.
Dang and she still has that voice today
