VW Flywheels, Seals, and Cockatiels - Type-3 Fastback Repair Discussion

- Ruby, the VW Type-3 Fastback started to leak oil BADLY! This is a re-occurrence of the problem, as I have replaced the VW Flywheel Seal VW Main Seal about 3 times in the last 6 years... TOO OFTEN! I believe the VW lightened flywheel is defective so I got a suitable replacement part for it.... and to my surprise upon removing the flywheel it appears to be in worse shape than it was the last time I saw it. I believe some moisture got to the flywheel at some time previous to getting the car, and the metal on the sealing surface was compromised thus eating the seal. Anyway... IS FIXED NOW!

Enjoy your videos a lot. Keep them coming entertaining and informative.
While watching VW Darrin just now he mentioned the passing of your father. Sincere condolences from a VW Bug fan living on Long Island, NY. Thoughts and prayers for your dad and also for your mom who Darrin also said is going through a hard time. I can relate as most adult men can. Hang in there. JS
Thanks James! My Mom is fine and has been fine, nothing went on there. Not sure how that came to be lol!
Wow that was a really unique flywheel problem. But I think its a cheap aftermarket part replaced before I got to this car. Probably was always that way. Good to go now!
There’s a very good Brazilian VW mechanic that has a channel here called Marcelo Tonella and what he does is put sealant on the o ring. He first puts sealant on the groove; then embeds the o ring in it and finally runs his finger all around it.
Are you going to the topic this side of the cetury?
@@nick35770 Maybe... what's it got to do with flywheel replacement?
Good to see you back
Thank you!
Glad to see you back, sorry about your losses and the damage to your yard but it's been a shity year all round, If I lived stateside I'd come and give you a hand unfortunately I don't but all the best from your friends across the pond and all the best for the future. 👍👍👍🇬🇧
Thank you!
Holding off down here till everything settles down..... Good to see you moving forward and everything is getting back to shape!
Thanks man! I'm late to comment on this one! Haha!
Sorry for your losses 😔. Hope things are getting better for you.
Thank you!
Hi Duckman,. Glad to see you with a smile on your face, probably different from what you feel inside but good to see anyway. While I haven't had the year you've had, I've had a bad one or two in my 61yrs of life and don't let too much get to me. Like I said last comment I hope the sun starts to shine on you from here on. Thumbs up, Glenn.
Very big thank you! I appreciate it more than you know!
parrots should not be in cages all day long. The two you have are so pretty. I have Two Parrots and they can be little pains but so joyful.
Thanks for the tips! They are not my first birds, though... haha! I am well aware of their needs.
That spring trick is a new one on me. I'll try that next time I have an issue, thanks.
Thank you!
Am happy that you back and safe from everting
Thank you!
Glad that the storm didn't hit you too bad. Always hope for the best for you!!!!!
Me too! Thank you!
Good to see you working again vw brother
Thank you!
Glad your back on hope the weather is kind to you
So far since then its been good! Thank you!
Man it’s so good to see you doing vids again, welcome back!
The flywheel looks like it rusted at some point before you got it. Hopefully the spring trick and new flywheel will keep her from puking 😂
Thanks for the shoutout buddy 👍
Yeah the flywheel is quite a mangled mess... the new one seems to balance much better when I rev, less vibration. And as of this far no leaks! Thanks for the tip! It was yet another good reason to give you a proper Shout!
Glad to see you back in the saddle Glen, looking forward to your future move to your garage. Ole Ruby is in good hands!
Thanks 👍
That torque multiplier is a great tool. I got one for wheel nuts for my 1966 Red London Bus wheel nuts. Glad to see your safe...onwards & upwards on the otherside of the pond 🤙🏻.
Thanks, you too! Love my torque tool!
Welcome Back Duckman... great to see again.... continued prayers for ya
Thanks so much! More to come!
@@DuckmanCycles Patiently waitin brother
Great to see a new video. Hoping this other Hurricane doesn't do more damage
Thankfully no more hurricanes after that mess!
Glad to see you are back at it.
I appreciate it man!
Good to see you back in action mate.
Flywheel and oils seal issues: Been there! Also had trouble with a crappy flywheel eating seal after seal! Very annoying!
Yes I'm subbed to Jawbreaker. Good guy.
😁👍🦆💩
Good to c another video up , brother . U seem to be in a better place , which is great . Sorry that u have had to deal with so much this year , but it has defenetly made u stronger in one way or another . Hope it's all turned around for the better know , and I wish u great success in the years to come . 👍👌✌
Thank you my friend!
Nice to see you back. Nice update on the projects
Thank you! More to come! :-D
Good to go
Yes sir! Thank you!
glad to see your back and filming again. great how to video. I watched that same video that Gary did on the fly wheel seal.
VWJawbreaker Gary is awesome!
Glad to see you back, and started back on the tools. Great channel with lots of content
Thank you my friend! I was glad to be back!
Hey Glenn, good to see you on the end of a wrench again. Take care of yourself, you have a bigger family to take car of now.
Thank you my friend!
Good to hear you chuckle 👍!
Thank you!
If your o-ring in the flywheel is bad it will also allow oil to get to the cluch. To much endplay will beat up your seal.
Both correct indeed!
I've had the seals replaced in the past on mine.. Not by myself.. And it still leaked.. I'm going to do it myself this time though. I used to have a Cockatial as a kid, birds are messy as hell but I enjoyed having one. Used to let it fly around my room... Even though it crapped everywhere lol.
Been down that road too.... still leaked... usually at that point its the O-ring however, at least in my experience. Krash flies around the house more, and craps more (AND BIGGER) than any cockatiel. I hope she learns to stay on her blankets!
Hey man just started working on it and the things I’ve learned is that changing spark plugs are a pain in the but
Hmmm, air cooled VW spark plugs aren't too bad, unless you have dual carburetors or something. Some people cut a hole under their fender to get in there easier.
DuckmanCycles and VW Garage ok will remember thx u so much
Love the tee shirt brother. Hey that flywheel was straight up LUMPY. LOL. Great to see you man. Peace.
Haha thanks man! Gotta look out for them lumpy flywheels!
You are now the birdman
Kind of always was lol
G'day Duckman,
Kevin here from Australia.
Glad to see you back on the screen. Your dad's bike what a ripper . Bringing that back to its former glory would make for a great series and when finished i can see Eleanor towing her to shows on the purpose built trailer you've built her.
(Just a dream i had)
Q. When you where installed your pressure plate did you re use the old bolts.
Anyhoo you and Boomer stay safe and keep well .
✌ Peace.
Thanks man! Just remember! No Eleanor Mustang videos on my channel! :)
This has been one hell of a bad year glad when it's gone
I'm thankful for what I got to keep this year.
What happens over time is that the crankshaft shims cut their way through the crankshaft into the dowel holes, this is where the oil leaks out. It’s not always the rear crankshaft oil seal.
That would be a pretty severe situation, it would also be obvious when you move the washers around. Not so in my case. Thanks for the suggestion!
I think some “bungee cords” 4-6 might hold the blue tarps down better than wood blocks and a rake handle. Just say n. 🧐
Great idea! Since you're offering, send some to the address on my website! ▶ duckshit.net
I REMEMBER AND MISSED MY TYPE3 , SAME WITH YOU, A FASTBACK, BUT ITS LIGHTENED FLYWHEEL AND A DUAL CARB,AND DUAL PORT, IT RUNS UP TO 170KPH HERE AT MANILA XPRESSWAY LAST ,80,S, ,TRY TO BRING YOURS AT MACHINE SHOP ,ITS PROVEN AND SURE IT,LL RUNS GREAT
Wow you must be really excited! That was a lot of yelling! LoL!
Mr 🦆 man where have you been we are missing you 🥺
Right here! Hehe!
My Dads male cockatiel used to sit on his shoulder and eat Oatmeal with him, when we lost Dad my Mom used to do the same thing with the bird.
Awwww, my parrots and cockatiels used to share breakfast and tea with me just the same. The ducks later did exactly that. Thanks for sharing!
*Hi dude.... U r crazy like me... LOL ... Watching u from Brazil...*
Hello there! Thanks for joining us! Hehe!
He’s back!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
OMG! Haha! Thanks!
I use that seal trick on motorcycle fork seals. Especially when the tubes show a little wear.
Good call! Thank you!
Ready for the bug jam dude?
Oh man... is it actually gonna happen this year?
Hey i was wondering where to get fastback parts? I just got a 68 n it needs signal lights and seals for the windows at least. Its pretty humid inside im hopin it doesn’t need floors
Depending what it is I can find them at most auto parts stores, or swapmeets, car shows, and places like thesamba.
Hey Duckman. Was the 12lbs flywheel a good choice for a street car and stock 1600? Considering it for myself
You saw me put one on here! It runs great!
👍
😂😂😂😂😂
What’s needed to convert a 69 fastback auto to manual and what trans is good to get
Hi there! A whole lot of stuff is needed. List: transmission, shifter, clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, matching CV joints and axles, mounts, shift coupler, shift rod, shifter mount, shift bushing, shifter, new pedal cluster, clutch cable tube, clutch cable, all the nuts and bolts, some welding experience, and the ability to know how. Or replace all that with some money and have someone else do it! 😀 I may have left a few things out, but its very possible though! Thanks for the question!
Miss your videos. I like them as it is like being in a class with a good teacher. The German flywheel seal used, where can i get it for my bug??
Thanks
Give a try to CIP1.com and tell them the Duckman sent you
In some of your videos you talk about the trolls and I can tell they bother you.
I don't understand why so many RUclipsrs let these adolescent dweebs get to them. They're here watching your videos because they're trying to learn how to do something...., so it's pretty hysterical when they act like they know more than you. ------ If you take the time to go to their channels you'll most-often see they have no videos and just a handful of subscribers. ----- The issue with these fools is: you are do something (making videos) that they don't have the balls to do. That makes them cowardly losers and losers like to drag winners down to their pathetic levels. (It's what they do - so don't let them succeed).
Trolls don't bother me, I've made that clear multiple times. They are what fuels my success. I get to defeat them every time. That wasn't even the subject of this video, however, so technically a post hijack is a form of trolling, too, right? LoL!
Duckman, I have a 1987 vw sedan, badly damaged by rust. I would like if you can return it to the life of the roads, just tell me if it is possible and we can agree. El Vocho is in Mexico.
Everything is possible! Look here! duckshit.net/eleanore
@@DuckmanCycles Very well, when you tell me I will send you the image of the vocho and you can see its deterioration condition.
Send it!
@@DuckmanCycles I already sent him the image by Gmail.
@@francpm5416 Sent who?
Considering it was a new flywheel it would work properly with a new seal as it came from the factory, don't forget the groove issue on flywheels. Also did you check your endplay?
Yes and thank you! I kick myself for not recording the end play portion in video.... its been answered A LOT here in the comments.
@@DuckmanCycles thank god !! I see people replacing flywheels like it’s an ordinary engine and a part of me dies when thinking that a good engine might be messed up .
😁👍🦆💩
Monday morning quarter backing here.....but check your end play if this doesn’t fix the problem.
If you have a walking crank it will waste that seal quick.
And a bunch of other “fun” stuff will happen as well.
The Mexican seal is missing the spring....never saw a main seal without a spring. Stranger things have happened though ha ha ha
And
It’s just my opinion....but that German seal?
Yeah....designed by eggheads with slide rules. There is no way I would do ANYTHING to that seal other than install it.
I failed to mention the end play in the video when I measured it, I razzed myself when editing the video later on that night. Its something that should be checked any time you swap a flywheel!
@@DuckmanCycles not trying to flog you...just trying to help figure out the problem....great video 😀😀
😁👍🦆💩
Wondered where you where hiding. Pity most of your hard work got some rust. Seen the same issue you have with the fly wheel.
Under a rock mostly! Hopefully will have a roof over all my vehicles soon to protect from the rust!
where have you been brother. you were missed.
Under a rock, hiding! :-D
Hi dog is crazy .duckman how are you hope to see more on RUclips.
