    I have looked at so many videos and articles on how to fit this problem, and this is the only fix that worked, thank you so much. Everyone else blames the problem on the print setup or window, but it ended up being a router problem. My printer is staying connected now.

    You sir, have a rare gift! Bridging the gap between techies and the rest of us by explaining things in clear relatable terms is extremely rare. I can't tell you how many tech support people I've had to suffer through and how many printers I"ve replaced trying to get this very problem resolved. No one ever suggested what you have....and it was really very simple. Thank you so much!! You're a godsend!

    Great video! This quickly fixed the printer offline issue on my network. For Mac users: after you follow the printer instructions from the video, go to "add printer" as you normally would to setup a printer, then click the "IP" tab and enter the IP address you assigned your printer. It will automatically connect and you'll be all set from there. This video worked for my Mac and Windows computers. Thank you @ MoreLinearThoughts.

    Thanks to this "How To" video I was able to fix my printer!

    Thank you for posting this video! I successfully followed the steps you outlined, and my printer has not fallen off my network since. Before setting up a static IP address I thought my printer might need to be replaced because it failed to stay connected. Thanks to this video, the problem has been resolved, AND I learned several helpful things I did not know (such as how to type the printer IP address in the address bar to access the printer set-up window). I appreciate your help very much!

    THANK YOU! I've spent the last month ironing out problems related to upgrading to Win 10, Office 2016, Endnote x7, Dragon Individual Professional... just to name a few... oh... did I mention the new router? Too many changes at once, no idea which one(s) caused the printing issues, but I've been tearing my hair out. Your explanation - by far - is the best I've found, and not least because you gave the background to the issue *first*; I'll be able to take the logic with me as I ramble around all our computers on the network. Makes me so glad I only need worry about one printer, though! Thanks again, from the left side of the pond. ;-D

    Thank you thank you thank you! I have yet to find any official "support" that talks about setting a static IP address -- which makes total sense. Of course, many computer users have likely not set up their own routers and wouldn't have a clue as to how -- which is a big hurdle. But at least a call to support or submitting a problem ticket should result in getting help to go through the process. By the way, I found that the last step -- removing the printer and adding back in was very easy, because (at least in Windows 7) the OS recognized the fact that drivers were already installed and all I had to do was accept the existing installation.

    Thank You so much for posting this video. I had been told to get rid of my router, get another printer, etc. etc. I have been so ready to throw both printers and the router out the window. Do you know how many times I have spent hours reinstalling my printers? Way too many. I could not figure out why that worked one day, then an hour later they were both offline again. Since you explained what is happening, I realized that when they go to "sleep mode" they have to hook into the network again and are "lost". Thank you for helping me understand and getting me through the process to a permanent solution. #oldpeopleproblems #idonthavetokillmyrouter #myprinterfinallyworks

    PS - might sound a bit daft, but I would add to anyone about this to remember to connect their Printer to their Router via a cable or Wirelessly etc. Up until this, I was connecting via my USB cable to my computer.

    Thanks for the video! I usually only set the static IP within the router and leave the printer on DHCP, because if the network parameters change due to router exchange the printer goes completely offline and people won't be able find or access the printer interface. So maybe this is the better way in private environments. What do you think?

    Thanks! But . . . now, even though I don't have to restart my router and printer to bring them online, I still need to restart my printers. Is there a setting I'm missing to keep the printers (which are on, with the displays illuminated) connected, without having to restart them every couple of hours? It's unbelievable HP and Epson's tech support will keep you on the phone for hours, having you move your printer closer to the modem, etc. but don not even know what a static ip address is, let alone mention anything about it.
    Thanks for the video. It was a big help.

    Many thanks! This helped me to fix the problem. However I noticed that the connection to the printer still keeps dropping. I am not sure but I think it happens when I move my Mac to another location (which I frequently do) or after the Mac or the printer go to sleep. Any ideas how to fix it? The printer is connected to a switch. Printer shows static IP on its panel. IP scan from Mac shows it on this same address. When I ping it I get a response. However I still cannot print to it?

    • @itskevscott
      @itskevscott 9 лет назад

      Marco Polo I don't have much experience on the Mac so can't help much there but it would be worth using an independent means of verifying that the Mac and the printer are where they say they are. I use "Network Analyser" on the iPhone to check that out (See www.linearthoughts.co.uk/network-analysis-app/). As you say however, this should give the same result as your IP scan and a ping is a pretty definitive test! I note that this problem appears a lot on the OS X knowledge base as well, they have info at support.apple.com/kb/PH11070 but it does all look quite generic.Sorry I cant be of more help!

    Hello , can you help me with this problem. My office printer is connected to a netgear switch along with all other PCs.When I try to add a network printer from any of the PCs it doesn't show up. Why is this?

    • @migisharomeo
      @migisharomeo 7 лет назад

      Do you know the IP address of that printer? If yes, Can you try to ping it?
      If yes, Some printers don't have autodetect feature when you are trying to add them, so you will need to add it manual.
      Control Panel/ Device and Printers/ Add a printer/ Select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" then Follow the steps.
      Hope this helps :)

    When assigning a static IP in the browser interface while logged into the printer, you forgot to assign a default gateway.

  • @johnn2326
    @johnn2326 3 года назад

    why did you not have to add the default gateway?

    • @linear-thoughts
      @linear-thoughts  3 года назад +1

      Hi John, that is a good question. My understanding was that default gateway (if not specified) defaults to the router address which in the case on my setup was the required outcome. Doing a how to video is always a trade-off between giving too much info and giving enough to allow the viewer to gain a reasonable knowledge of the issue. This video assumed that the viewer had a working network and so I chose to avoid talking about gateways as in almost all cases using the (non specified) default one will be fine.
