at first I thought "I beg your pardon?" However, it's Mr. Anka's interpretation of this song. Soundgarden makes it rock, Paul Anka makes it swing. Thank God there is room in this world for both versions to exist.
and now Postmodern Jukebox's version. Honestly I don't know which version i like better, this one is more laid back, but that one has Haley's vocals and violins.
"Thank God there is room (space) in this world for both versions " Hmmm, it seems that room or space is always within a mind or soul allowing it ! Possibly you have this room or space(iousness) !? Well , Paul can ("still") sing .... and I like his mellow rendition ..... or am not with the swing !! (it seems to jumpy or "uppity" in contrast to the lyrical content !)
"The idea that Black Hole Sun, for example, can be this international hit single... Have you ever read the words to it? It's amazing to me. It's not anthemic, it's extremely dark, it's very esoteric, it's stream-of-consciousness lyrics that I don't know what they mean. Um, I don't know what Paul Anka thinks it means, but he sings the shit out of it." - Chris Cornell
One thing I am impressed with Anka on. He takes these songs, and actually makes them sound like they came from that era. I don't know how he did it. If your not paying attention, you might not even know and just think it was from way back when.
You have to give it to Anka. How can you turn, one of the anthem of dark grunge, into, indeed, a smooth finger snapping swing! With the same lyrics!!! It really works... I think the trick is simply because grunge is melancholia. Just like bitter/sweet smooth swing. Id love to hear Soundgarden do Puppy Love! It would work too!
@@michelelaraia7358 I've just heard a few of the songs from that album, thanks to your comment. I'm going for a lie down now, and don't think I'll ever be the same again!
I sooooo wish I could have been a fly on the wall the day the guys of Soundgarden heard this. You gotta love that Paul has a way of making this STILL sound badass!!!

Who so well deservedly belongs to be there... It's just so not fair as he obviously continues to be as relevant as he ever was... Shame on you Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... We fans know the real deal...*
This is actually brilliant on Anka's part. Younger people can get turned on to the novelty of his different, jazzy take on (at least relatively) contemporary songs, and then they might want to buy in to his earlier, original stuff. (Sorry, that might be a "no crap Sherlock" statement, but I'm just sayin')
Holy shit, that's where I heard it too! My sister and I were sitting there waiting for food and we were like "isn't that..." We laughed our asses off! Olive Garden must have a good sense of humor.
I first heard this (my first inkling of the Rock Swings album) at a Borders Books back in the day, and my first thought was "didn't Pat Boone already do this?"
This song is one of the best covers that I´ve heared. Mr. Anka knows how to take an awesome song ang give us a beautiful musical piece. Thank you Mr. Anka. You did it again.
As a fan of both Paul Anka and The original version, I think this song really has as much emotion as the original. Music like this just shows it in a different way, but it's still emotional.
Yeah. If the arrangement had stayed in that ballad, torch song mode, it would have been beautiful. Missed opportunity. It could have been trippy/dreamy "Wee Small Hours" type of song. If an orchestra got all dense, with strings, and swirling harmonies, more in keeping with the Soundgarden version, it would have been amazing. I love the sweet, kind of weariness or the first verse. When the swingin', rat pack deal kicks in, the song becomes just prop for that gimmicky vibe.
Another marvellous proof, that Chris Cornell was a genius in songwriting. It takes genius to write a song so rich and full, with beauty, truth, and make it substance so indistructible, that every version brings out new, unheard properties of twhat makes a song truely beautiful. In my opinion, a brilliant cover of a world-famous song shows the true qualities of both, the writer/composer and the interpreting artist, because the task is as simple as it is difficult: Understand AND appreciatie the song - the essence of it, and keep it whole, pay your respects truly. When you ad to it properly, you exceed that goal - and that does not happen very often.
Our wedding DJ flabbergasted us with it at dinner, he watched for our reactions. The parent contingent were just mildly puzzled they'd never heard this Anka tune before.
