I don't find it insulting. I think it's great when jazz singers and crooners cover rock - it's a compliment to the composition and lyrics that they can be taken on in a swing style like this and still be fun to listen to.
I'll admit it l, when I came here to watch this video I wanted to hate it but I ended up loving it! He knocked it out of the park! I think Kurt would have loved this!
When I saw the title, I thought this would be a joke. Paul Anka sings Nirvana? But 5 seconds of listening to that swinging big band changed my mind. And Paul does an amazing vocal. The musicianship is great. The arrangement is great. What a pleasant surprise! Now I want to hear Kurt sing "Put Your Head On My Sjoulde"r lol.
The fact that I'm not a giant Paul Anka fan, but as I've grown to appreciate jazz crooners in general I appreciate them that much more when they reinterpret rock. There's nothing insulting about it. It's a testament to the songwriting that it's worth reinterpretation. And remember, whoever owns the rights to the song had to agree to a published cover (and for courtesy, any musician who isn't a jerk would get the OK of the writers too, in cases where the writers don't own the rights).
My father just reminded me that he used to play this cover in the car when I was a kid... I distinctly remember that he also played the original-that's how I learned about Nirvana in the first place-and I don't think I ever realized it was the same song.
I think this is a BRILLIANT version - heard it last weekend at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and had to ask everyone until finally the sound man (of course) and when he told me it was Paul Anka I almost fell over. I love Kurt Cobain, and I love Nirvana - but there is some genius too in this arrangement - and a lot of surprise. Kurt might not have appreciated it - but that is also part of it's genius.
Great Swing version to a great grunge song. Being older, I like swing now more, and this song allows my ears to enjoy the mellow cool jazz tune, with Corbain's powerful lyrics. And remenice my youth.
Heard this at the Monoprix near the train station in Arles, France, the other day. Not kidding. I was singing and dancing in the aisles. Freaked the Frenchies out, it sure did.
First time I've understood the lyrics. I love it when people take a song and really change it up and make it totally new and fresh. Paul Anka does a wonderful job. I will say I like Nirvana's original a lot, of course.
Some of Cobain's biggest inspirations were from the Beatles, Elvis, and swing music like Sinatra and Bennet. Do you think that alternative and grunge just shit right out of his skull?
Oh my gosh... it WORKS! I clicked on the link for a chuckle. Figured it would be like Shatner singing (well, "singing") Lucy in the Sky. But Anka actually sells it. Love this version!

Finally! A sensible way to turn my senior citizen friends onto grudge rock staples!
+Robert White I love jokes that start with "Finally!"
Finally! Geoff Nelson became aware that it was all for him!
grunge*
😂
For classy people that like Nirvana. I approve.
I don't find it insulting. I think it's great when jazz singers and crooners cover rock - it's a compliment to the composition and lyrics that they can be taken on in a swing style like this and still be fun to listen to.
huge nirvana fan here. this is an amazing cover, great work Paul Anka
Paul Anka wrote the song originally.
Nirvana "sampled" this song.
Shaun Fisher So the band got the vinyl and sample this song? You got the wrong term down vato.
@@danbrown67 as if he did
I'll admit it l, when I came here to watch this video I wanted to hate it but I ended up loving it! He knocked it out of the park! I think Kurt would have loved this!
I just imagine Kurt with his hair slicked back singing this with a bow tie and tuxedo in an alternate universe. LOL!
You mean like how he was in the IN BLOOM music video...LOL
Check out Mike Patton's "Mondo Cane" and you've pretty much got it
Ronnie Roland search up the nirvana rolling stones cover or the With The Lights Out album cover
I can imagine this playing if he had met a man who is rumored to be his grandfather-in-law: Marlon Brando.
Maybe at the old-timey bar in The Overlook Hotel from The Shining.
A truly good song can be played in any genre.
+brandon mcgaw except disco!!!!
+News watcher Good point. = )
+brandon mcgaw This isn't a dig at the song at all mind you but Swing can turn even a shit song into gold.
+Enoch Thompson

This was originally sang by Frank Sinatra wayyyyyyy before Nirvana
@@kyleemoul9977 No this wasn’t, this (along with the rest of this album) are swing versions of real songs
@@kyleemoul9977 wrong, Nirvana original
Anka wrote “My Way,” and there are some strong rock and punk covers of that - including a shocking, brilliant take by the Sex Pistols (right?)
@@Brad4Ellis Anka only put lyrics to it. It was an existing French song.
I'm a huge Nirvana fan and I wasn't sure how I would feel about this. I absolutely love this!
This only proves that music is truly universal!
Too many people go to Olive Garden. Seriously I was just roaming and stumbled upon this song. Olive Garden? what the hell people

Oh my God, this songs is just SO jazz/bigband/don'tknow!! Great cover, especially by such a legend as Paul Anka! :D
My father just reminded me that he used to play this cover in the car when I was a kid... I distinctly remember that he also played the original-that's how I learned about Nirvana in the first place-and I don't think I ever realized it was the same song.

This would work well as an intro to a cyberpunk-esk 1920’s spy thriller
Great original band arrangement. 🎺

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
Excellent cover :)
Totally worth it.
