I have actually done that very same thing some time back. Unfortunately they didn't tell me a workaround, but once he explained to me that it was picking up the HTML I ended up doing the same exact thing that you did. I dropped it into a word document and copied it back over. This will probably be very informative to many people. Thanks for all the great content.
Super interesting RR. I did not know that either. I have copied text and descriptions from websites in most of my 600+ listings and haven’t had a problem. BUT what I do differently is when I paste the text into the description I right-click and select “paste as plain text”. I started doing that because I wanted the text to look similar to the title box. Little did I know I was killing two birds with one stone. This will save the step of copying to Word. Looking forward to your next one!
I wonder if you could just Paste & Match Style when you paste the text. Then it picks up the formatting that already exists in your description field. That's how it would work in other scenarios. Of course, eBay could just make it impossible to paste HTML, since it's against the rules, but that would make too much sense!

I sold on ebay back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s and remember having to actually use html in my descriptions!
