  • This Old Mill boat ride was built in 1929 at Playland Park in Rye, NY. It opened during the second season of the park's existence and has been a favorite at the park ever since. The ride was re-themed in 1988 as the Playland Waterworks and now features gnomes and evil trolls. This video was recorded by Bill Cherkasky on August 2nd, 2023.

Greetings! May I use this footage in a video I'm making about bizarre dark rides? I will give your channel full credit.

That is fine, as long as you credit the channel.

From this ride’s front entranceway design, it looked like the Golden Nugget (Wildwood ) / Old Mill (Kennywood)
Even the operator’s tall wooden levers look similar.
I wonder if it was designed by the same ride manufacturer
Thanks for posting these and running the channel / website !

Yeah...I love the old wooden band brakes. It's neat to see them still in operation on an old ride.

When I think old mill I think trolls and dance lights

Well...remember that Journey Into the Center of the Earth was an old mill and that had plenty of trolls.

I liked the ride, what there was of it. But I thought there were too many yards of empty, blank corridor with no theming at all. Even if they did not want to spend the money on more animatronics, they could have made the walls look like rock and caverns to go along with the theme. Even maintenance door were not disguised but were right out in the open. Way too much empty space. I really liked the idea of going from the mine to the troll and dragon caverns, but it needed more theming.

Originally it would be completely dark in there so there would be the suspense of the unexpected. In response to a boy getting out of his boat and drowning in 2005, they added lots of lights to the tunnels whiich changed the spookiness of the ride.

It's the design of the ride. Ye Old Mill style rides are like this, when it was refurbished. The tunnels were dark, but then after an incident they lit the tunnels up for safety
