Hey, It finally surfaced. Before I've only seen pictures of Donna & Lou together. What a treat!! They sound great together. Both had wonderful, deep and soulful voices. True talent. Thank you! RIP
...I did a mural of photos featuring Donna in the 90's and had a B&W clipping of this performance, and could NOT find any tracing of visual footage on the internet! ...and "Midnight Special" was just...SITTING on this! ...a VERY rare treat for Donna fans....
*YES!* I've waited 47 years to see and hear this duet again! I've search periodically for it for about 23 years and never found a thing until now. *Thank you!*
Donna did record some "gospel flavored" songs, or songs with "religious lyrics" in them over the years, but the best gospel vocal performances she has recorded has only been a handful of songs. She sang in a choir for German artist Veit Marvos (a keyboardist and producer, of Red Point Orchestra fame). He edited the 1972/1973 track in 1987 and removed about everyone else in the choir to bring Donna's vocals to the front as if she sang lead on the song. The reason why this song went undiscovered for years is because Donna went through a weird period where she went by the name "Gayn Pierre" and that is the name used in these sessions. She also used that alias when she recorded the 1972 "GODSPELL" broadway show soundtrack. The song was a cover of the 70's soul band- Eric Burdon & WAR song called "They Can't Take Away Our Music". Another female singer is heard at the intro, but not sure who she is. Listen closely as to how Donna belts it out as if she is in church- ruclips.net/video/rMqe2Vz8q5o/видео.html Then in 1975, after releasing her debut solo album in Germany called LADY OF THE NIGHT (which didn't produce any big hits), Giorgio Moroder/Pete Bellotte and Donna released a 7" 45 single in the Netherlands, called "Virgin Mary". Listen to how she once again sings as if she is in church, towards end of the song- ruclips.net/video/HwR2pVa71P8/видео.html Once she left Casablanca, her new record company Geffen Records allowed her to include one "religious" song on each album, which she did- Her 1980 album, THE WANDERER had "I Believe In Jesus", and each album after that contained a "religious" toned song on them. The closest she got to recording an actual gospel album was 1994's "CHRISTMAS SPIRIT".
Amazing talents! I also noticed Donna’s outfit. She reinterprets this silhouette decades later. I’m thinking about her Night Of The Proms performance era.
...what on EARTH is "Midnight Special" DOING!???? ....this is INCREDIBLE and VERY RARE footage!! ...Donna actually went on Tour with Lou in 1977 (she opened for him), and she (allegedly) got canned, because her Show was upstaging Lou's!! ...swing low, INDEED!!
"Until I saw Donna Summer a year ago on a Midnight Special with Lou Rawls, I’d viewed her music simply as brilliantly packaged aural sex, nothing too meaty, and, in spite of its implied intimacies, nothing too personal. But when she joined Rawls on the dais dressed like a Bloomingdale’s Cleopatra, she sang probably the most affectingly full-blooded version of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” I’d ever heard. This wasn’t the cooing voice she used on records." ~Mikal Gilmore - "Is There Life After Disco?" - Rolling Stone magazine, March 23rd, 1978~

That was beautiful
This Is How TO SING.💕🙌
Wish Donna had recorded more gospel songs. "I Believe In Jesus" (1982) is one of my favorites. Great seeing Lou and Donna singing together.
That song could have been a hit. Love it.
1980. It was nominated for a Grammy.
I wish Me. Donna had recorded more gospel songs as well. Whenever she sang gospel, her God-given annointing for song seemed to be "heightened"!

Why didn't she do a Gospel album.
Don't think I'm reforming the band but not bad.
Sad in a way that they both died from lung cancer.
