As a yarn dyer, I like to use the color wheel for inspiration. I agree with you about not getting too much inspiration from others. Sometimes looking at the work of others can block your creativity.
I get my inspiration from books, it can be books about mittens, scals, hats, sweaters. Bit and peces here and there. Now am going to found out how my sweater will end, green or pink, but it will be cabels in the bottom and grey in the top.

Yeah, you can see something that works in a beanie or mittens and then transfer that into a jumper design :)
