Groucho was born in October 1890, so he was 78 (just short of 79) when this interview was filmed, and the man clearly hadn't lost a single comedic beat despite being retired. He passed away in 1977. That New York Jewish accent is so iconic with him - do any real people speak like that anymore?
What accent? I'm not hearing one
Groucho was about 79 in this interview. Youthful man!
wow! he looked great for 79!!!
Close. I wiki'd it -- he was 78, three months short of 79. Still, for a guy in his late-70's, he still had perfect comedic timing! These old funny-men from the Golden Age of Cinema (many were Jewish) make comedy look easy but it really isn't. Timing is critical in every single thing you do. Groucho understood this. His thick New York City accent certainly helped.
@@Soufriere84 i heard he was even tryin to be funny on his death bed
@@Soufriere84 That's why I said, "about" 79. Coulda' used "circa" as well. ;) And you're right -- in comedy, timing is everything.
I'm hear cause of Gilbert godfried
1972, my friend bought me tickets to see An Evening with Groucho at Carnegie Hall, emceed by Dick Cavette. NYC traffic was worse than expected, so my buddy drove his black VW Beetle on the shoulder. It felt liks a scene out of a Marx Brother's movie. We made it on time.
Groucho was 82 years old; a bit slower, but in some ways even funnier. He sang, told stories and jokes. And the audience adored him for who he still was and what he gave us - himself.
Groucho still influences comedians, even indirectly from the older, influential commedians who admired and learned from Groucho. He's a National Treasure.
He's the embodiment of talent I fear we'll never see the likes of ever again.
Don't be afraid.
This was lovely. I didn’t think I’d ever see Groucho in color film and the story was delightful.
This song I learned to heart because it made me so happy and calm singing it. Born in ‘96 and this guy will forever be one of my favorites.
i was born in 67 so i was a kid when he died. i have the same birthday as groucho though
marry me. I'll be dead in twenty years or so you can have all my stuff and my money. It's not much, but you can say that you took a dead old man for his money so you can entertain your boyfriends in style.
i was born in 84
@@juliasharon5337 happy early bday 5 days ahead!
@@AceripXF thank you
I’m 54 and I’ve been the biggest Groucho fan since I was a kid. 2 years I dressed up as Groucho for Halloween. I wish I could tell him thank you for all the laughs he has given me.
im 37/f i just did that this past Halloween but dressed as capt spaulding
I'm 70 & laugh even though I know what's coming with the jokes
I'm a big fan to, I used to do the Groucho walk but my knees hurt if I do it to long now.
Love this song my dad taught me this song, after he called a girl at my church with lots of tattoos Lydia.
That's a cool ass dad 😂
Amazing man, and family. When the world gets me down, a Marx Bros. movie takes me away on a lighthearted escape .
Lovely! The Marx Bros still make me laugh to this day. Groucho is my idol!
His generation was one of true talent. The golden age of cinema.
No special effects. Plot and talent were necessary to succeed for movies, actors and actresses, comedians etc.
Here in the UK there’s a shabby station called Channel 4 which when I was a kid put on Marx Brothers’ movies late at night every year between Xmas and NYE. I got addicted to their genius then and always dust one off during the Season to this day. Here’s to you all, you absolute gems.
😱💕
i just got into them this yr
I like that idea, Michael James! I just may start a new holiday tradition 'cause I've grown weary of "King Kong" (that's my family's holiday choice). What's your favorite Marx Bros for Xmas/NYE?
@@TheJcfclark ya i like that idea too!
Wow! Awesome, right? (I've been lucky, watching those films since 1958!)@@AceripXF
Classic .... The Marx Brothers were the best ... honored to know Harpo’s son ...
One of my favorites ever. The one and only Groucho Marx!
I freaking love Groucho. Love how he referred to Jolson.
I watched this interview live back in 1969. Have never forgotten it. Wonderful Groucho.
Groucho my hero
Absolutely brilliant.
the serious look on grouchos face cos they knew wut song he was gonna sing is just so priceless LMAOO!!
Groucho sings! Pure charm...
Groucho is a comedy genius.
CLASSIC!
now there's an entertainer act sing and a really comedian love them
I watched this at 16. Groucho..God bless. You are missed.
Same age as me 😂
Greatest of them all!!!!
The House Band sounds Brilliant at the end
I dig that he enjoyed the hip performers of the day.
I love Groucho!
Groucho the Legend. There are no "stars" in Hollywood these days. Bring back James Cagney et al. Hollywood is dead.
...I memorized that song over 50 years ago and still, at 74, sang it along with Groucho...
So wonderful! 💚💙
❤️
They sure don't make them like Groucho anymore!! Always remember this song from A Day At The Circus I watched as a kid in the 60's on TV... 😂🤭🥰
My favorite love song
i sang this in a pullman car
audience: cheers n claps
G-why are u u applauding a pullman car
OMG IM ROARING! 😂😂😂
Such great actors, he and his brothers😂🤣👍👍
totally awesome. first heard in the Muppet Show, when Kermit sung it, but this performance is a masterpiece. Love it
this vid makes me happy ^_^
Groucho sang a piece of this song once on his game show, YOU BET YOUR LIFE. His deadpan vocal delivery with its peculiar twang was always wonderful to listen to, no matter what he sang… 3:10
loved it... exellent.
He was around 80 in this too...
Groucho is King
That never fails to make me smile.
Dick Cavett was such an underrated interviewer. In the film "At the Circus",Chico plays the piano while Groucho sings. I believe that was the only time that happened.
I'm not sure it's this song if that's the case. Because I just watched the scene where he sings this song and don't recall seeing Chico even on screen at that time, much less being shown playing piano. So it might've been a different scene/song or possibly even a different film.
@@dildonius That scene with Chico playing the piano was in a movie called "At the Circus". This particular clip was from the old Dick Cavett talk show. Try googling "Lydia the Tattooed Lady-At the Circus" and you should be fine.
@@garykass114 That's literally what I did. Reread my comment. Chico wasn't in the scene.
@@dildonius My apologies. Chico is definitely there at the beginning of the clip.
The greatest
What a gift he was, geez.
Amazing
This is a delight to watch!
Groucho LIVES!!
46 years ago today...
😞~RIP Groucho Marx~😞
One of the best performers 😊
Groucho was the greatest!
A timeless Arlen-Harburg song....the same team that brought you Over the Rainbow!
💜💜💜
That's real comedy. Today's so-called comedians can't hold a candle to Groucho and the brothers. Great number, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
He was more amusing in later life here than in his prime
My name is Lydia!!
Are you the tattooed lady? Lol.
I knew a young woman named Lydia - I used to sing her this song sometimes as a joke. She was always puzzled and a bit annoyed because she didn't know of the song and its clever lyrics. 'She has eyes that men adore so -- and a torso, even more so. . .'
Impossible to listen to this without grinning like a goon. Irresistible.
Walks, stands, talks 👄 ...even sings ...funny ..."Isn't thatttt speciallll" - Church Lady
My granddad sang this song to GMA. Lydia her middle name . Have you heard that song being played in the breaking bad finale?
Yep! I wonder how many other people caught that! It’s the ringtone Todd had on his phone for Lydia, which enables Walter to know who is calling when the phone rings in Todd’s pocket.

Lydia The Tattooed Lady
is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Art Carney or Jackie Gleason? How about any Honeymooners actors that were a part of the main cast?
why are u applauding a pullman car LMAOO😂
Because they are all gone and there are no more sad how things change
It's 2022 and I'm Lydia the tattooed lady and I'm also the encyclopedia! (aka Goggle)...
Harburg was a genius. The Lydia/Encyclopedia rhyme has not been topped. The same year, 1939, he wrote "The Wizard of Oz".

Groucho was amazing singing Lydia The Tattooed Lady, and apparently from his memory because I didn’t see him reading from cue cards. But he did skip a stanza, right after the stanza with the Godiva line, the following penultimate stanza was skipped:
Here is Grover Whalen unveilin' the Trylon
Over on the west coast we have Treasure Islan'
Here's Nijinsky a doin' the Rhumba
Here's her Social Security numba
La la la La la la La la la La la la
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Cut out for timing on the show
@@johnboys4697 yeah, I guess 20sec is really going to disrupt the shows schedule.
vaudeville smooth ... they just dont make entertainers like they used to
🤣🤣🤣🤣😘😘😘🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
Even Groucho got the name of the movie wrong: it's "At the Circus", not "A Day at the Circus".
Son of a bitch. I must have watched that movie a hundred times when I was a kid and I never noticed the change in height. Also, it's hilarious that they had a midget in the suit when the actual midget character in the movie was played by a 10 year old kid.
He isn't too bad considering his 83 years. You gotta figure that he has one of the distinctive voices that people like. They like his personality very much. Thus even when he goes slightly off-key? We aren't bothered. And maybe part of it is that since we mostly know him as a comedian? We can't take him seriously. And this covers up lots of funky pitch mistakes.
He was 78 when this was taped.
Awesome talent!!
Pure comic genius. He was great friends with Alice Cooper. Can you imagine a more unlikely pair? 😂

If talent was a thermometer then it was on the hundred mark, today Kim Kardashian, etc has it plummeting to almost zero, where did it go wrong, and why ? Are todays viewers so stupid they expect nothing more , what has happened?
英語がわからないけど、グラウチョの胡散臭さは伝わる。年とっても、そこはさすが。
Sorry... Kermit did a way better job. 🤭
Gilbert Gottfried brought me here.
Ain’t he dead ?
