  • A mini-tutorial on how to sub-target ship modules and use this to your advantage in combat in the sci-fi space flight sim game, Elite:Dangerous.
Enemy ships can be destroyed by whittling their hull values down to 0%. But did you know there's a way to destroy ships WITHOUT having to reduce their hulls to zero?
By using sub-targeting you can select individual ship modules on which to focus your weapons fire. If you reduce an enemy's Power Plant to 0%, every subsequent hit has a random chance of detonating the engine. Doing so destroys the entire ship; even if its hull is still intact!
This technique can also be used by pirates to disable a target craft. Sub-targeting the mark's Drives and reducing them to 0% will set it adrift in space, rendering it unable to jump and incapable of maneuvering. It can then be looted at the pirate's leisure.
You will find your sub-targeting keybinds at:

To note, this works best with high ROF weapons as you want as many strikes as possible such as (as demonstrated) rapid fire pulse lasers, burst lasers (rapid if you want best odds) and frag cannons (as each pellet can roll for a crit) notably the Pacifiers as you get much more of the shot on the plant, double shot if you really hate them. This is a minor use case for multi servos, but you’ll still probably be better off with oversized as crit chance increases the more damage you do.

Always surprised by the depth of this, should save me time trying to whittle down hull! Thanks commander o7

for some reason it doesn't work and the NPC Ai (wanted in missions or in Nav Beacon) they can still move even the power core is at 0%
did i do something wrong? should i aim at Drive instead? i thought damage their module till 0% means they can't move at all. seems like they can :/

The effect of reducing a module's integrity to 0% has changed over time. It _used_ to be the case that reducing the Power Plant to 0% caused the targeted ship to lose all power, including to thrusters. That is no longer the case; ships can still fly at full speed even with a 0% PP.
The goal of targeting the PP is to cause it to detonate, destroying the ship (even if its hull is still intact). However, the chance to cause this explosion is small. I have no source for confirmation, but I read a long time ago the chance is 4% per shot that breaches to the PP _after_ it has reached 0%.
Thus the goal is overwhelming volume of fire in the hope that one of the shots will "roll" somewhere within that magic 4% trigger. That is why the ship in the video is equipped with Pulse Lasers with the Rapid Fire engineering modification to achieve as many hits on the Power Plant as possible within a short time frame to hopefully trigger the explosion.
