If you have sometching your neighbour would snitch you to authority. Its baggage that hunt us, and its now what Russians call years of liberation. But Poland was not on map 123 years, its patriotic spirit that made it possible for nation to endure, so when someone from outside complain usually there is swift and hard reaction. Glad to help...

About those complains like “Why Poland? There’s nothing to do here” - it’s our national trait 😅 I used to work with people from Dubai and they once said to me “You Poles are weird. You work hard, got a great but often edgy sense of humor, and you’re absolute world champions in complaining”. Maybe they said it because each time they asked “how was your weekend” we used to reply with “as always too short” 😉

Many people are surprised to heard what I'm about to say: Poland was most diverse and tolerant country in the world during middleages. It was one of big trade routes between west and east, so both cultures was mixed with polish culture, there was many jews and arabs in Polands back in those days. It wasn't strange to see catholic church, mosque and synagogue on 1 square or street in medieval polish city. Some of older people I know still have paintings of jews hanging on wall with text under is, something like "bringing jew to the home brings luck" or something like that. So hospitality to other cultures is rooted very deeply in polish culture, too bad years of wars and communism tried to destroy it.

Yes I’m Polish and the reason for Poland today becoming a homogeneous nation of one ethnicity is because our ethnic minorities have been used as a pretext for other nations to invade us. For example before WW2, Poland was home to millions of Germans spread across all of the country but Germany used that as a casus Belli to invade us. Before that, in the 1700s Poland was home to millions of Ruthenians (Belarusians and Ukrainians) but Russia used that as a pretext to invade us. Therefore Poles are now wary of ethnic minorities.

I remember when emperor Akihito and his wife visited Kraków back in 2002 and the whole place went mental. There were almost a million people in the Kraków market square to see and welcome them. It was pretty ridiculous, looking back on it now. There is also a Japanese museum and a cultural centre in Kraków which, I am led to believe, is the only one in the region. I think there is a very strong appreciation for Japanese culture in Kraków for sure.
Interestingly, the craziest reaction to my nationality I ever got was in a cafe in Maibara (we had 2 hours to kill before changing for the Tokaido Shinkansen). There was this old lady running a cafe and an older local man just chilling there. We started a small conversation (in my very sad and pathetic Japanese) and both the lady and the man made me sing a Polish song, tell them about my local football club, food etc. etc. They knew tons about Poland, strangely. I was speechless for a while tbh, and I still remember the whole experience with a big smile.

    1. We're one of the safest country in the world. Most of the crimes that are committed in Poland involve alcohol (car crashes, fights etc.), and something like murder is so rare that when it happends it's a big news and every TV station are talking about it.
    2. We care about animals more then people, I find it natural cos they're weaker then us so it's our responsibility to help them. When it comes to homeless people they're sometimes really nice and friendly when u just give them 2zł. If you're helping them from time to time then sometimes they're going to help you and they will even call you "boss" or "manager" (in pl "szef", "kierownik").
    3. Prices are low for foreigner cos they're making more money. Something like a gas/petrol costs 6,60zł for 1L, for Pole it's really high price but for American it's only $1,50. But what if Americans had to pay $6,60 for 1L of gas? It wouldn't be that cheap. Think about prices from Poles perspective.
4.Idk like others but as a man Im only hugging girls for greeting and as for man I give them handshake or high five.
    5. Japan have great influence over young people in Poland, half of my friends are watching anime or reading mangas. I grew up watching anime so I find it fun to watch. I tried to learn Japanese but learning alphabet was too hard for me. At least speaking part is easy cos pronunciations are similar.

"something like murder is so rare that when it happends it's a big news and every TV station are talking about it" this is a straight up lie. you can find out about many murders on many local magazines or news and it's not big news but common ones. not to mention suicide rates.

Seasoned Pole here (also a personal opinion so dont treat it like Holy Poland Statement or something):
I appreciate your video about my country! It warms my heart you feel good and relaxed in Poland! :-)
    1. Peaceful cities? Yes. It has improved vastly over the years and its definitely a good thing and I appreciate you feel safe in Poland! If you dont go into weird places its quite peaceful, even during a night.
    2. About pigeons in Poland - Unless its some form of breeding (some people breed pigeons), most of these flying rats are pooping all over the city. We generally try not to feed them but some people apparently like stained cities and windows in their homes. So while pigeons is a nice sight and kids do kind of see them as an attraction, its generally a bad thing we have them around.
    3. Prices? Low!? Not for long, our government sucks and now we can top it off with war in our neighbor and aftermath of corona/production crisis. While we may be cheap country, our prices steadily rise and our salary increase cant match them, at least for now. But from someone coming to Poland - yes, its really cheap country to visit!
Travel is cheap - true. But we are Poles so we use more expansive cars to go around xD
    4. Hugging is cool. Girls like to hug a lot, guys depends on relationship and context. Funny thing that hugging started to be popular just recently, like 15-10 years ago. If you feel uncomfortable with hugging then its fine if you just handshake or nod with your head and say "cześć!" ;) It may turn out awkward but we respect personal space.
    5. Double true. We like Japanese people, viewing you as good mannered, honorable and we are generally curious about you people :P

I think one of the things I love most about Poland is Polish honesty. They are very open with their thoughts, even when they do not like something. They easily express or complain about something. If they feel good and like something and want to praise it they say that too. They are not rude (most of the time) but always honest, so you can get to know a person easier and have lots of interesting conversations.
Perhaps people say other countries are more interesting, because they became so familiar with local wonders they do not seem interesting to these people anymore XD But Polish people love their country and culture, they are simply not blind to it's faults and, again, very honest about them.

Polish people have strong national identity, but they consider their country uninteresting and poorly managed. Unfortunately, there is some truth in this that it differs from European countries on different levels (like bad earnings, faulty health care, education system, law that makes it difficult, for example, to run a business...) Very nice videos, at a high quality I hope your channel will continue to grow.

I didn't expect to see my town Zamość on your list haha
Anyways, I many people who visit Poland say the prices are low and Polish people just say they're high. They're high for us, they keep getting higher but our salary doesn't. A lot of people can't afford basic things.
Another thing - we say we hate our country because of out government, mainly this is the reason why people seem so rude, sad etc. People in general are kind, open minded and helpful. If someone doesn't want to talk to a foreigner is propably because they are too shy to speak English. Everyone knows that Polish people know English pretty well but are afraid to make a mistake. Our schools don't encourage us to speak like other schools do. It's common for an eng teacher to say to a student to say nothing if they're not perfect. And it stays with you in your adult life.
Anime is veeeeeery common here. Even though there are people who hate it just because, but the same people around 20-35 yo watched Naruto or Dragon Ball when they were kids.

I grew up in a small town in Poland in the 90s without any foreigners. I remember visiting Gdansk one time, sitting in McDonald's and there was this Japanese girl sitting close to us. She was writing something in a notebook in Japanese and my friends and I were mesmerised by how beautiful the characters she was writing were. She noticed we were curious and we struck up a conversation, my first with a non European.
Also in the 90s and early 2000s, many of my friends were obsessed with the Japanese culture, manga, anime, the language, food... To this day I hold the Japanese in high esteem and I wish to visit Japan one day

A Pole here :) I am glad I listened to your video. The points you made were so refreshing and really inspiring. I think today more and more young people do not appreciate their own country growing up in Poland. But I think it's often because of how they complain about the government. And they do not see Poland as something much more beyond that. I think Poland deserves more love from its own people especially 🥰

  • @anulkaaw

Nice to listen to someone saying nice things about my own country. Yes, I think that despite the stereotypes, Polish people are pretty open-minded and accepting of others. Although there will be exceptions as there always are. And I do hear all the time how people from Asia praise how peaceful it is here, even in the cities, so if that's the vibe you're looking for, please come and visit. And I do recommend visiting our mountains, the lake district and national parks like Białowieża, if you enjoy the nature.

It also makes me very relieved to hear that you experience little to no racism. I know a lot of people here, especially those with worse education or from smaller towns, can be vicious and bigoted, so I'm glad at least some foreigners have a nice experience. But then again, I would say Poles look up to and respect Japanese people a lot, so that may be the reason.
