  • The two Underground stations that are Embankment and Charing Cross are very close to each other, and over the years have changed names numerous times. Here's an animated timeline showing how the Tube lines have grown in the area, and how the names have changed with them.

I remember as a small child in the early '60's being fascinated by the coloured coded ceiling mounted direction signs showing the paths to different platforms through the labyrinth of passenger interchange tunnels beneath the District & Circle to the Northern & Bakerloo lines when it was all called Charing Cross. I grew up in the Victoria area nearby. Always loved exploring the Underground, local red and green bus routes and travelling on BR EMU's like the Brighton Belle.

Hoorah for Strand as one of the few large enamel roundels graces my stairwell in pride of place - having been purchased for the princely sum of £20 at Uxbridge Station many many moons ago on a Sunday enthusiasts special when I was a wee nipper and my Godmother worked for LT. I recall the looks of bewilderment as a Piccadilly stock train went round the District line on part of the tour!

My dad's AA Road Guide to London from the 70s has Trafalgar tube station. My mum was using it a few years ago to plan a trip to London and she was all set to go to Trafalgar Square tube station. My dad said he didn't think there was a Trafalgar Square tube station and I agreed with him but my mother produced the map! We were very confused but this explains it!

The changing names reflect network growth, faster trains, a greater people focus for city spaces, and the growth of tourism. But Charing Cross does not reflect anything but the station name. The name for the group of stations should be Trafalgar as the north entrance (bus stops area) is literally 100 metres from the square. Waterloo and Trafalgar are a great pair of names for major stations north and south of the river.

Back in the days of the GLC and ken livingstone there would be occasional free days for children. So we spent the day going to places with the weirdest names. Places like seven sisters for instance. And of course there was nothing to look at. But we had a smug satisfaction of having reached these places, looked around and then went on to our next destination. 😁 we were bored children so don't ask why? Plus you were free to wander around aimlessly without social services getting involved or being petrified by the boogy man!
