- There's a new Tube Map out for December 2019! And it's got the TfL Rail extension out west to Reading on it, as well as showing connector blobs for River Boat/Thames Clipper services.
So I headed to Reading to catch a Purple Train, and see where my day took me ...

Lady giving out the keyrings was soooo happy, it's great to see people who love their jobs
I was going to say exactly that
Yes, that was great to see, the enthusiasm is infectious!
She seemed absolutely lovely, nice to see someone enjoy their job so much
if she gets paid even half as much as a tube driver no wonder she's happy. £££
KAAPSTAD SA seem like such a lovely lady, hope she see this video and put even bigger smile on her face
I tell you one thing Geoff doesn't mind: Getting up in the mornings.
I think it’s safe to say the ‘Tube Map’ hasn’t really been a tube map for years since the inclusion of London Overground, TfL Rail and London Trams. It should be a ‘TfL Railway’ map.
All the more reason to return to "Journey planner".
Noddy Mac what about renaming it as a “tfl transport system map”
Why Why If you were to do that you’d also need to include all bus routes too. The map is already too congested and it isn’t even finished yet.
Don't forget everyones favourite driverless train, the DLR too.
@@aaronmread The DLR is staffed at all times now. It’s not the same as it used to be.
least used pier on London River Services!!!!!!
But it will be one video not a series
Probably the one that goes from the Hilton across to Canary Wharf?
least used emirates air line terminal
Matthew Blurton that gets used quite a lot
@@Mkbw50 no flipping way dude, there is only 2 terminals
That “wtf” look Geoff had when the jackhammer started up... haha
hahaha! ha!
Now I stared at that "Ivor" longer than I thought.
This video is sponsored by loud freight trains and noisy drills!
Correct, they earn our keep.
well, you know the drill by now
Sounds boreing!
@@gibbo9089 Sounds like a job for Elon Musk.
Alfie - Ahhh, at last, an original comment. Most comments are just rehashes of the same jokes! 10/10 for you my boy!
Interesting thing is that part of this line did have "Tube" service eons ago....for two years it was possible to take a joint service that ran from Windsor and Eaton Central, to Ealing Broadway, and then on the District from there most of the way....1883 to 1885. "Iver" didn't exist during that time, by the way.
Have you heard about the news for Redcar British Steel? It's now a disused station! But the South Tees Development Corporation is hoping to regenerate the steelworks site and revamp the station. They want to bring thousands of jobs to the area
Really? So it's closed now??
Iamboring ashell Like IBM, it’s technically open but no services call there
@@agent_605 so it will still be the least used station with 0 people a year
Iamboring ashell No, because no services call there. Otherwise it would’ve been IBM last time
Aww, that's kinda sad
11:50
Well she’s a treat! I hope she gets some props from her bosses for being ABSOLUTELY excited about new trains.
I already live in London in England but I still learned a lot! So thank you!
A really splendid mini epic Geoff. Who else is making unscripted documentaries with over a dozen different dramatic interludes, and a strong narrative thread? You never do bad videos but you seem to be surpassing yourself lately. Long may it continue
Agree - huge amount of love put in for a little everyday video
The fact that they were handing out free merch, and cookies really warmed my heart. That is some good PR there.
Your work is absolutely amazing. Well done. I learned so much about British transport from your videos.
"Clearly a lot of construction going on"
3 guys standing around, one on the phone
wonderfully made- I'd love to see more vlog videos by you, Geoff. looks great
Welcome to the tube Map, Reading 💛💙
I've also noticed that over the last week or two BBC London news has featured Reading a lot more than they used to. Well, a few items recently instead of nothing. Did BBC South put us up for adoption? 🤔
What about West Drayton, Iver, Langley, Slough, Burnham, Taplow, Maidenhead and Twyford
Love those new Bombardier trains. I can clearly see Bombardier improve itself after Electrostar.
@@AndrewG1989 Well I prefer Aventra to Electrostar, because Electrostar has bad aerodynamics (due to the gangway) and could create horrible pain in your ears when passing through tunnels.
I really want one of those key rings.
It was nice of the CEO to put in an appearance. CEO's need to do this more often. The best way to appeal to a human customer is to show them that, as a business, you too are human. Still, I can't help but wonder if the CEO really knew he was going to be answering questions from a rail-fan who knew more about his job than he did. haha
Great interview Geoff.
Love your channel, I'm always surprised how interesting I am finding trains etc...
Hi from Montreal. ❄️🍁 Nice to see someone excited about maps. Thanks, Geoff!
⭐️ Subtle differences in the the pdf Tube map on TfL’s website as with the paper map (as far as I could see from when you zoomed in on the video).
For example, in the Berkshire “mauve” zone doesn’t have the words “Oyster not valid.”
And the boat “blobs” at Westminster and Waterloo are kissing in pdf but not on your paper map.
You make the mundane interesting. Great work as always.
Another great vid Geoff! 👏
Fascinating video, beautifully made and full of unexpectedly useful information . . .
I suppose that’s the beauty of the diagram over the geographic map. One can squeeze in additions and extensions such as TfL to Reading here.
You hit the trending page! Congrats!!
Rewatching this video after a few years - I would love to see another video with this kind of style!
I'm glad they found a member of staff who was suitably excited to hand out the merch. And yes, I absolutely want one of those keyrings!
the strange thing was that geoff was not aware that would be happening !
Love it! I'm from New York and am amazed how much trains grow each time I come back. These videos help a novice like me, but the best way to learn it is to experience it yourself. But, thanks to the Pandemic, that won't be anytime soon. Keep up the great work, Geoff!
9:46 I measured as well; there’s only 1mm between them and also saw it’s the same case for Osterley and Boston Manor on the Heathrow branch of the Piccadilly Line.
7:43 LMAO! "You've got to be kidding!"
Uhhh. My mom and I call it „The wall of shame“ Cause of the smokers. 😂😉 Usually, when we’re in London, we stay there in a hotel near to Paddington Station. And my mom has to sand there, too. I’m luckily not. So she’s at the wall of shame. Next time I try to get the „challenge“ with five people on a picture done. 🙂
Finally, the Purple Line is out. Sort of. Love these videos, Jeff!😬
7:42 the workers know how the RUclips video works 😂
Secrets of the Thames Clippers?
Ha ha - I love your Iver (Ivor) bit - welcome to my world - that station is probably going to be most updated station on the network as you found out during your recording. Looking forward to getting moving again when the world returns to normal and using contactless from Iver
I thought for a moment you were going to take the boat to Tower Hill, walk up to Liverpool St and then continue on the Purple line to Shenfield.
Sweet, cool tube map, can't wait to get one of the new tube map December 2019 soon
just noticed Ivor and Iver between 7:45 and 7:57. Very sneaky Geoff!!!!!!!!
Lucky for You Geoff, is winter, so nobody uses lawnmower machines.
I travelled to London from the US for New Year’s and took the TfL Rail to Slough. I had no idea it was just a few weeks old!
I really love your videos they always put me in a good mood thanks for being such a great creator!
Your channel is addictive!
And additive
even after watching all your videos I would still get lost lol
Great video Geoff. I think you should do more videos on the great western railway.👍
@geoff Marshall I had the privilege of seeing a DLR train sitting at platform 3 at mudchute station a couple of weeks ago!! An update for your ‘ secrets of the DLR ‘ video!! And tube maps from iver, reading etc, I can’t get my head around that!!
I wish the NYC subway of has a person at all of the stations
Forget it! The MTA is looking for a massive bailout from the Feds and might not get it, so frills like customer service staff are just a dream.
Nice to see the Met line has been straightened out again
How so? It seems to have as many kinks as before.
I LOVE these videos.
I work for LUL and they started to appear from Wednesday at TCR where I work; quite glad to see they are out
I can't wait to see the new map
This must’ve been a nightmare to edit. The audio gods really weren’t on your side
I love your vids and always will
Issuing a new tube map without getting Geoff to have a look at it ... good luck with that
Well she was just a delight!
Geoff: "Let's see what TfL are doing to add PurpleTrain Branding to these stations."
TfL: "NO! Let's *hear* what TfL are doing."
Awesome vlog
Drilling down to the detail, good cutaway😂😂😂😂
I travel to from the U.S. to London on business a few times a year. Just went again this past week. I usually go from LHR to Hounslow Central to stay the night. I picked up a tube map, to have the newest one. I haven't had time to look at it closely. Little did I know it had so many changes to it.
"Five Get Taken to A&E for Chronic Emphysema"
The new tube & rail map now shows Reading as well as Luton (and with it East Midlands Railway) and Welwyn, whilst the Network Railcard map now shows everywhere from Norwich to Exeter and Dover to the outskirts of Birmingham.
I think that if there is any more additions to the map after Purple Train and Northern Line extension, the tube map is going to have to get bigger
yes it will have to grow.
@Ender Gamer 👍😂
One more fold would give two extra panels. Perhaps enough to have the station list on the reverse side with the map on the front. That would give room to expand the map sideways. Doesn't do anything for north and south expansions. Maybe another 1cm in height. Just my thought on a possible solution.
@@roboftherock The map wouldn't be able to be wider horizontally due to these maps not fitting in the racks. Chances are the map would have to increase a few centimetres vertically like you said.
Just think what it would be like if it was still geographical and not diagrammatic.
I been on the first TfL rail from paddington to reading. I have to get off at hayes and harlington because contatless on the 2nd January is contactless beyond west drayton. If you are travelling beyond west drayton before 2md January, you must use a paper ticket. The London and rail tube map also extended to luton airport parkway and welwyn gc but no swr to reading and it said towards Staines on GWR. Found a goof. Oh and at hayes and harlington I took a gwr towards didcot 😟. I say that Langley station has the most purple
I recognise that slip road at the start from the start of the train chase scene in Paddington 2
Yes I want that hi-vis keychain!!! Must have 😁😁
I was thinking, in Chicago we call them Water Taxis, so maybe Water Cabs?
I really enjoy Geoff's videos. It's not always about really interesting stuff (to me) but he does it in such an enthusiastic style you just want to watch. I wonder if he'll get spotted by a TV company? He'd be great on documentaries of industrial history related subjects.
Trick to go to slough with oyster:
Take the 81 bus
I live near that route
The hi-viz key rings have been around for a while. I got one on the TFL Rail train to Heathrow T4 back in Feb this year... just a couple of passenger service agents walking down the train and stopping and talking to random people and handing them out.
Hope you get a train set for christmas Geoff. A tube set would be so cool.
So with the new map a new video is comming :) ... Least use pier of the clippers
A man could walk from Surrey Quays to Iceland to Green Land without getting his feet wet.
How about a series of “All the Loos” ... every station with functional public toilets. Cottaging stats optional.
I keed, I keed.
Mostly.
All passengers use lifts as loos :-)
@@AndrzejLondyn So, just like the Los Angeles MTA subway system. :(
lohphat “cottaging stats” hilarious 😂😂
Geoff: Ivor the Engine joke,
Freight Train Driver: Heckles,
Jackhammer Pile Driver Operator: Hold my beer!
The cover to me suggested that the central line that goes from east to west now meets and possibly crosses the Elizabeth line that also goes from east to west. Further east to further west. Because from what I've seen they will have some stations in common in central london like london liverpool street when they complete the Elizabeth line .
Oh also the jubilee line that's also goes east to west (nw) haha
Considering that Pinewood Film Studios is just up the road from Iver station, I'm slightly disappointed that we've missed out on some James Bond one-liners and the chance to interview Howard Smith whilst wearing a dinner jacket.
take me back to these halcyon days please!
OMG I work for the Thames Clippers and I was at Westminster yesturday!
Woohoo you didn't resist 😁😁😁
I saw Princess Anne on that little access road into Paddington once.
I hope you offered a helping hand to get her on her feet again.
Not really tube map related but I noticed at my local station there was a new version of the "London and South East" rail map and London Connections map (it's dated 15th December 2019) and it now shows request stop stations with a hand symbol next to them. Seems only to be those that are always a request stops rather than those that are request stops only by some TOCs. Anyway thought you might be interested. Also the map now just seems to be titled "Rail Network Maps" and I it also extends to all of the Greater Anglia network (e.g. Great Yarmouth/Lowestoft) which I think might be new and back down to Exeter (which sometimes seems to be on and sometimes off this map)
When you approached Howard, the seat backs looked like a row of towels that might be by the beach.
6:56 @Geoff you've got to show the freight train next time! US viewers like myself are interested to see what the UK's freight network is like. Thanks! Love content!
Lack of USB sockets/power sockets is ridiculous... A bit outdated.
Interestingly, as a possessor of a London Freedom Pass, you can go all the way to reading for free. One of the ticket office
staff at Paddington told me when I tried to pay the extra from West Drayton, the previous limit on this line. This is because it is a TFL run service naturally. The barriers at Reading failed to open on December 15th however, and a lady porter had to open the barrier for me.
You could make this clear Geoff, when commenting that Oyster is not valid past West Drayton as there are continual announcements to that effect.
As usual, an interesting video.
When can we go to Abbey Wood?
Cant wait for Crossrail... Eventually 🇬🇧
Putney Bridge and the pier is probably shown the way it is because: a) it's slightly longer than the min walk at 0.4 miles; b) it's on the opposite side of the Thames from the station!
8.30 All the purple bins
I just went to London today, and oh what a cufuffle I had. I went to watch wicked and had a train ticket to Newport from Paddington at 18:17 and the show finished at 17:15. I jumped on the tube at Victoria on the circle and District line and I got on a Wimbledon train and realised if i don’t get off before Earl’s Court I would’ve missed my train so I got off at South Kensington to change to the circle line but there were no circle trains so I went to the Piccadilly line to go to Oxford Circus and change to bakerloo but it was rammed cause of winter wonderland so I was faffing around upstairs (at this rate I’ve been stuck at South Kensington for 15mins). Luckily a circle train finally came so I made the train home 😂😂😂
yes, never depend on the circle. Correct route- Victoria to Oxford Circus, Oxford Circus to Lancaster Gate then walk. ( or bakerloo). Or with Winter Wonderland Victoria-Embankment-Paddington ( should be easier to get on a Bakerloo that way).
Maidenhead, where I grew up is finally on the map! Probably in zone 48 😂
It's not even in a zone 😂
@@gavinstanley3883 harsh but fair!! 😂
'It's very hard not to change Iver, I-V-E-R, to Ivor'
*changes it to Ivor for a few seconds*
I was in London last week. I missed the new tube map. I have the older ones, but not this one.
Geoff - perhaps you should do a background track of a version of Prince
“Purple Train”
XD
6:14 I see what you did with Iver, sneaky
Look closely at 6:45 😂
I used to be a huge Ivor the Engine fan when I was a kid. I had actually forgotten all about it for decades until Geoff sneeked in a clip.
@@flaggnerd
Actually, between 6:47 and 6:48 (for a few frames).
And at 7:05, when the color changes, presumably a change in the daylight.
r00ters
Not so sneaky, really. He drew our attention to it at 6:04.
*Ivor :P
Since I get off at Twyford, I'm delighted we're on the map! Maybe one day the Oyster card will be usable everywhere.
Wouldn't that be nifty?
Been watching your vids for years, thr day I don't get a train is the day you're at my local station (Iver not Ivor)
You should do a video on the new Avanti West Coast trains and review them👍
There is a small town in SE Virginia called Ivor and it is spelled properly. 🙂
all the piers!
I love Ivor the engine
