I've been to Hammersmith tube station three times. All three times to see The Frantic Four, also known as Status Quo. Legendary!
4 or 5 if you include Andy Bown saw them at Middlesbrough Town Hall a few years ago just as good rocking through the years. Pity about Rick RIP

To avoid confusion, they should rename one of the stations Shepherd's Boosh.
The signs on the central line platforms at Liverpool Street have Shepherd’s Bush green marked on them even though the station was never called that
All the signs on the Westbound platforms at Gants Hill say Shepherds Bush Green too
They appeared when the station closed for rebuilding in 2008, around the time the H&C station was renamed. They must have planned to rename them both, then realised how unnecessary it was.
Yes, a number of line diagrams at various stations on the Central Line refer to "Shepherd's Bush Green," made up during the period when that renaming was considered. I suppose they thought it would be easy enough to cover up the word "Green" with masking tape if the name change didn't go ahead (which of course it didn't), but it seems they just left them there as they were.
@@ianmcclavin In the case of Gants Hill they managed to cover over the Epping to Ongar Branch so I imagine that covering the 'Green' was an oversight?

One of my favorite things to do after these videos is to spot the old alignments on Google Earth. I'm amazed how clear it is over 100 years later considering all the redevelopment in that area.
I've got a lot of shopping to do. I have to go to Wood Lane, then Wood Lane, then White City and White City and then Shepherd's Bush followed by Shepherd's Bush and finally Shepherd's Bush.
I only knew approx 1/2 of what was shared here - amazing historic recollections you are preserving for the future Geoff - splendid! Fascinating to see the remnants that (in decades) are still just sitting there.

Wow. I knew a lot of that. But I didn't realize that the lawn down to Richmond was once a railway line but I did know that up until 2010 South West trains did run down the district line between Putney and Wimbledon

I'm glad they renamed one, as the H&C and Central Line Shepherd's Bush stations are quite a distance apart, further than the two Edgware Road stations!
Yes, I'm surprised that they haven't renamed one of the Edgware Road stations by now. I would have thought when they did the major refurbishment of the Bakerloo platforms and the first time round lift renewal in the 80's (necessitating the station's closure for a few months) would have been the ideal opportunity. Instead, they were considering renaming the other station "Chapel Street" at the time, which came to nothing. The Bakerloo station did get renamed temporarily whilst the lifts were being replaced a second time in the 2000's....vinyls appeared on all the platform side roundels proclaiming "Station Closed!!" for the duration..
Always interesting to see these videos showing the development of railways in a certain area.

White City station closes due to fire in 1959, but one of the signs somehow has the TFL website? I'm guessing it was a new sign put up since then and the burned sign is a remnant of the 1950's?

That’s really good explanation for background of all the lines in Shepherd’s Bush and curve causing terrible noise on the Central line
There was also a link between the West London line and the Central line north of White City as part of the Ealing & Shepherds Bush Railway (which is also the reason the CLR tracks swap to right-hand-running)

Glossed over the bit where the Central line's Wood Lane station was built in the depot and had one platform when it opened in 1908 and then got two more when the extension to Ealing opened. And that there was an approved plan in 1920 to extend the Central line from Shepherd's Bush to Richmond via Hammersmith Grove Road and Turnham Green.
I know the recent renovations upgraded travel experience but I do miss the character of the old station.

Interesting point at 2:55-Freston Road itself goes below the viaduct just as the remnant of the Latimer Road curve starts to branch off, and it is allegedly this arch that Rick Astley is dancing under in the Never Gonna Give You Up video (it does, at least, look more or less the same).
So that is what relates rickrolling to the fact that the Circle Line now goes to Hammersmith (and not Olympia, which would be more consistent with the Middle Circle precedent).
I have been watching for at least 8 years
I lived in a block of flats ('The Grampians') that was built on the trackbed of the former LSW line, in fact it connected to a squash club that's in the bridge taking Shepherd's Bush Rd over the line.
The track bed of the LSW route is easily identifiable from Shepherd's Bush Road to what is now Olympia station.
Although the line closed in 1916 it was not until 1933 that 'The Grampians' was built. The original scheme was to build similar blocks all the way along the alignment, but in the end only the one was built.
I've been told that the original conveyance for the site mentions London Transport, which suggests that the trackbed was transferred to LT when it was formed.
There was, for many years, a folk myth among railway enthusiasts that the basement flats had been built to accommodate the railway loading gauge should the line have ever been reinstated. As a former occupant of the block I can state unambiguously that this is not the case!
I worked on the modern builds as project manager. Under the bus stop and the LU station control room are huge shafts built for access for all schemes. The bus stop one was back filled with ballast and the bus stop placed on top! What a waste! It was de-scoped. After it was built!
I don't think any of the station signs carry the apostrophe in "Shepherd's Bush" any more now. They always used to in the 70's, at both the Central and Met.(now H&C) stations.
The apostrophes have all migrated onto the greengrocers' price boards (tomato's, apple's, pear's, potato's ...).

I'm glad I don't live in London. Too many stations appearing and disappearing all the time! When I've visited I've found walking has been easiest for navigation and finding train back to Scotland.

The platforms of Shepherd's Bush [Orange Line] overlap with the location of Uxbridge Road's platforms. Therefore, it is not inaccurate to say that Shepherd's Bush Overground was built on the site of Uxbridge Road.
The tracks of the two Hammersmith stations should be joined together. The 100 metre separation is sufficient to cover any track height difference.

You know what's interesting? The Franco-British exhibition. I knew that white city was the location and that BBC TV centre was built there but that was about it.
Add it happens the site was bigger than just the TV centre site and looking at old maps you can see that it went all the way up past the A40, which didn't exist at the time.
The name White City comes from the exhibition whose buildings where white and the former white city stadium was built for the 1908 Olympics which were held at the same time as the exhibition

I think he mentioned a few years ago that it was the Piccadilly Line because of all the abandoned stations on it.
I've got a love-hate relationship with the bakerloo line. I hope to see new bakerloo trains in the near future though.

With virtually all maps, the convention is that unless otherwise marked, the top is north, so it's not really necessary here.
