Thank you!!!!! I stopped wearing weaves which was the culprit because I was putting too much stress on my hairline through bad weave techniques (I am a advocate of good weave hair techniques because I do feel they can be a great protective style if worn correctly). After I eliminated weaves I used castor oil and rosemary oil to stimulate hair growth by massaging the damaged areas three times a week. Traction alopecia can be temporary or permanent and lucky for me it was temporary :)
Oh don't be depressed!!! I am pretty sure your hair is growing but it most likely the chlorine in the water that is causing breakage. Chlorine is very drying to all textures so you may need to place leave in condition on your strands, or seal your hair after each diving session to retain length.
I love your outfit. For years, I thought that my hair wouldn't grow passed shoulder length. In the 89s, I had a jherri curl, and it grew but not to amazing lengths. In 02, I got locs and when I cut them last yr they were waist length. I say this all to say, that w/ proper care everyone' can retain length.
Thank you! Well that is definitely a old tale. Trimming or cutting hair has absolutely nothing to do with growth that stems from the root. Our hair is constantly growing whether we cut it or not. If you take care of your hair including from the inside with diet and a healthy lifestyle your really shouldn't have to cut or constantly trim your hair if you want to retain length :)
Thank you!!! Well you seem to have the norm in growth since you are only two years into your journey and you also have to take into account if you dust, trim or had any split ends or breakage over the years. It really does take much more than 2 years to figure out your predetermined length :)
Awe stop it, lol. I am sure your beauty surpasses hair. I like how you said you are now "actively" going to take control in the "health" of your hair. There are so many factors that can really produce results like a healthy diet which sometimes people push to the side, I know I was one of them years ago. This change and others such as patience and knowing the science of hair can tremendously benefit our hair.
Well, I am not here to change your mind but it is fact & not an idea. If predetermined length did not exist, we would not shed hair at all. Shedded hair is a sign that your strand has reached its predetermined length so individual strands can actually have different predetermined lengths. Every strand of hair on your body has a predetermined length. If predetermined length did not exist we would never shed hair and would be tripping over our own hair, eye lashes, arm, underarms and leg hairs.
Hey!!! Good to see you on here. Thank you so much! We really appreciate the support and we love what we do so it is really us who should be saying thank you to all of you so thank you :D
Hello Lovely :D Well I would suggest finding protective styles you love! When I wore braids when I was younger I wore all types of styles and updos. If you love wearing your hair out, I would suggest finding a happy medium, maybe you could rock your hair in braids or twists 2-3 weeks out the month and the last week or two weeks rock a braid out or twist out, almost like a reward from wearing protective styles if protective style is not your thing :D
I love when I find RUclipsrs who actually do research. That is so important for me on my channel as well. Some people just make videos to make videos. Research is so important. Thank you for putting the time in.
Sending you so much love back! We deeply appreciate the support and you have no idea how much we love sharing with all of you. We really try to individually comment back as much as possible and that comes from love so really thank you!!!! :D
great video! My curls are tiny and because of scalp eczema I manipulate my hair often. I'm glad you clarified that curly hair is more delicate. I hate that some women think that there hair doesn't grow.
Thank you so much and really glad you appreciate and put the time in yourself! It is all about sharing and showing support. You can never know enough, learning is a life journey, good to know many of you feel how we do:D
Thank you so much!!! Yes, unfortunately stereotypes hold some individuals back in gaining the knowledge they need to retain length but the good thing about stereotypes are they are just that and nothing more. Thank you again :D
Thank you so much! I had a similar experience when I was older and I had trouble with retaining length until I looked back in my youth and remembered the same hair practices my Mom used. Good to hear you are finding a regimen that works for you. We definitely will keep the videos coming. Thank you again :DDD
My pleasure and yes she has been missed! My bestie, Nikisha should be back with us on YT this week. She is still settling in but married life is wonderful. Nikisha and her husband were in town yesterday so it was great to see them :)
Great video, hon! Your Mum must be Superwoman to do TWO heads of hair and keep them so lovely whilst you were younger! Loving the hair and outfit too. Thanks for sharing! *Lola*
Yes, you are absolutely right and all the info you mentioned is actually included in the link right below this video in a article I wrote a week ago on how an unhealthy diet can effect your predetermined length :D
Hello and thank you so much! Fortunately my traction alopecia was temporary and not permanent so therefore it grew back but I massaged castor oil and rosemary oil lightly on the damaged areas every other day.
Yes, I have an identical twin & she usually wears her hair 50% up and 50% down (but her strands are thicker or coarser then mine). Well, your hair continues to grow but what happens is after two years you will shed those strands that have reached their predetermined length. Once the hair has shed then the new strand replaces the old. Our strands are different lengths, if they were all the same when it would come to the shedding phase or telegon phase we would lose all of our hair at once.
Yes, I will! Traction alopecia can be temporary or permanent, luckily mine was temporary but I did massage the damage areas with castor oil and rosemary oil which helps stimulate growth. Sounds like your hair is recovering from previous damage. I would definitely continue using water but be careful when manipulating your hair while wet since it seems you may have high porosity strands. I also do not use protein treatments but I do seal my ends every week.
Your welcome & so glad you found the info useful! I do not use protein treatments but I do use coconut oil which contains protein. I used castor and rosemary oil when I use to have traction alopecia but now use them as well as extra virgin coconut oil & extra virgin olive oil. Protein treatments can work but too much protein can cause dryness which can lead to breakage. I would need to know about your regimen, night time routine, how you usually style your hair, product usage, porosity, & diet.
Thank you so much and yes, how we take care of our hair really determines how much length we can actually retain. I love the styles of the 30's so that is a great compliment :DD
Hair grows in cycles of various phases: anagen is the growth phase; catagen is the involuting or regressing phase; and telogen, the resting or quiescent phase. Although you may have a genetic tendancy to have a growth span of 2 years, there are ways to increase the anagen phase. Diet and exercise to name a few. Will increase your anagen phase also....
Thank you so much and your welcome. Glad you found the info useful and excited that you are seeing results. Our hair is simply amazing when we know how to care for it :D
Hi, your hair is awesome!! I am a natural with 3b hair and have been for 10 years. I have so much damage to my hair from heat, gel, ponytail holders, and being rough with my hair. My goal lenth is waist length and with predetermined length I want to know since i have been natural for 10 years and at this point my hair is shoulder length can i grow my hair out to my waist or do I have to wait till most of is shed to get my goal length?
My pleasure!!! Well, fortunately my traction alopecia was temporary and not permanent so therefore it grew back but I massaged castor oil and rosemary oil lightly on the damaged areas every other day.
Thank you so much and yes, that is a common misconception that are hair does not grow when it is actually not retaining length because of how we are treating our strands including diet!
Thank you and yes a big shoutout! I definitely have no qualms with Mothers who were not knowledgeable or who weren't shown the way, especially since there is so much more that Mothers have to deal with but I do feel blessed to have had that extra care regarding hair. Thank you and it seems we have very similar stories! I definitely feel very lucky to had a positive self image in my Mother's eyes of my hair :D
Thank you for this education. After being 3yrs, 3 months natural, I believe I am experiencing more growth now than I have when I first bc'd. ...it could be that I'm taking care of my hair better and that I'm not concentrating on growth as much as I did when I first started out. :)
That last pic is so beautiful & classic! Thank you for this informative video =) I am seeing my hair reach its potentials now and it's pretty cool. I can't wait to see where I end up.
Nice video, and as always I just love your hair. You were very lucky to have a mom who did the right things to your hair as a child, even if it was by accident. Most of us were not that lucky and that was by accident too. Back in the day a lot of people just didn't know.
Well being black does not equate to thin hair but really quite the opposite. I would definitely need you to share your hair regimen in detail and your diet as well.
Thank you so much! We are going be posting every week starting this week and Nikisha will be back this week as well :D You are too sweet! Taren's event was really awesome and such a good energy with all the guests. I had a really great time! I will definitely check out the video now and thank you again! :D
Thank you so much!!! Well know one knows their predetermined length until they have truly taken extraordinary care with their hair and certain parts of your hair could have different predetermined lengths. Also remember diet can play a part as well and if you are not eating healthy then you could actually stunt growth and shed hair before its time. I included the link to an article I wrote about diet and predetermined length in the description box. Hope this helps :)
Good morning or afternoon here :DDD Yes, you are absolutely right! Even when I use to wear a weave I still had to care for my natural hair underneath! Glad you are sharing the wealth of education, they are lucky to have your advice :D
Thank you so much! I appreciate the love and so many of us do not factor in trimming when trying to assess our growth for the year so that is a very good point! Thank you again :D
I was using that Jheri Curl stiff daily and it was suoper mositurized and I believe th eperm dried it out and it di dnot need to be down every day. So then I started wearing the back uo and roling my front in curl sina picking oy out with my hands every three days and it flourished. On the other hand I had a young cousin who was bi-racila and bu the time she was eight her Mom who was white said" her hair just doesn't grow and till she was 14 it was always short but beautiful shiny hair that
My pleasure and I definitely think that is it! When I first bc'd my main focus was on length and not health and I could not retain length to save my life!!!!
Yes, and braids definitely can cause traction alopecia, any style that causes too much stress on the hairline is creating grounds for permanent or temporary traction alopecia, Wow, unless someone requests sitting in front of the window, then there is no reason someone should be put in that position if they feel uncomfortable.
Thank you so much and yes I was definitely lucky. I completely understand many women did not experience this and to no fault of their own or their Mothers. Shoot my Mother didn't know, it was purely by accident. If it wasn't for her Mother or my Grandmother I would not have had this hair childhood experience. I think it is important for many women to know that their hair can grow but the cycle of tradition has to be broken and we have to re-learn how to truly take care of natural hair :)
There is really no way to tell but if your mother takes really good care of her hair and doesn't cut or trim her hair constantly you can sometimes get a great assessment this way :D
Yes, they are almost one in the same. If your Mother is properly taking care of her hair, then yes, she could be a big indicator of what your predetermined length is :)
Thank you for this video. You are right we do have a predetermined length and I think I've reached mine. I needed to hear that so I could stop stressing over why after 50 years I still do not have shoulder length hair. Now i can relax and cut it into a flattering style!!1
Cip, I love your vlogs! I'm so happy you addressed this. Someone was asking me how can you tell what your anagen growth phase is between the 2-6 and I had no clue? Knowing that genetics plays a factor does help and knowing that if you do a great job retaining you can atleast hit 12 helps! My first year I hit 6 the second year I hit about 4 and I know it was because of all the trimming I was doing. So, If you factor in trims I guess you'd have to avg about 4 a year? Idk..Great Video!
Thank you so much and if you want to really start a YT page remember you have one life so you should go for it!!!! Have a great weekend as well and glad you found us :D
Terminal length is the term I'm familiar with, but same idea. I'm at 8.5 - 10 inches now and I'm hoping to reach 16 - 18 inches at least. My mom's hair has grown well past the point my hair is at now so I hope that's an indicator that it will be possible for me. :3
Your awesome!!!! Thank you so much and really glad you found the info useful :D The reconstructed jean collar is from Urban Outfitters. They are unfortunately no longer in stock but luckily it is very easy to imitate with a cheap old jean jacket from a thrift store ;)
Thank you so much and she was and still is, lol. I was fortunate to have such a woman like that in my life. Hair is actually the last thing that comes to mind when thinking of her but it sure taught me patience which she instilled through our hair, lol.
Where did you get this information from? I'd like to read more about it! It would be awesome if you guys would put the links of where you get your info from in the description box. Great Video BTW!
Thanks for the info!! Cant wait to see what my predetermined length is! In all my life I've never reached even half of it I'm sure. Did your nose piercing hurt? I really want one.
you are sooooo right! I'm 2 1/2 natural, and my length is collar bone :/ I do put dye (to cover gray strands) and the last time permanent dye. all these things will has slowed down my growth I'm sure.
Thank you for explaining what I knew to be true!!!! I love my sisters with both long and short natural hair. However, to my LH sisters writing books and blogs on how to get their length is probably not possible for too many. Thanks
Thank you for the information! very useful. I remember my hair growing in long and thick when I was younger because my Mom knew how to manipulate it and protective styling (even though she had no idea that that was the term) was what we wore all the time. You mentioned that castor oil and rosemary helped you with your problem areas but you don't use protein? I'm wondering if that will help with some areas in the middle where my hair is drier, more brittle, and breaks faster than the rest...
I remember having medium thick ponytails as a kid of 5. Then a neighbor Jeanie cut my top pony tail off and one bottom one. And I noticed after that the front never grew long again and it seemd medium thin till braifs came along, The first time after I took th ebraids out I cut it even got a oern and it was almost to the elbows and slowly broke off to shorter that it was before I brided it. I realize many year slater that my hair needed moisture. Because with wet and wavy hair for braiding
Lol, thank you so much and the collar I purchased from Urban Outfitters for 5.00 dollars (which is out of stock) but you can easily reconstruct this same look with a cheap old thrifted jean jacket :D
Your welcome but it is definitely possible and of the norm for many women of color to reach growth phases that extend way beyond 2 years as well as over 6 years :)
Your question makes absolute sense. Predetermined length is determined by genetics so yes, birth. Also you can reach your predetermined length more than once unless you have a predetermined length of 95-100 years, lol. Hope this helps :D
Very informative. I have a question. How do you feel about an old tale I have been told about cutting your hair. "If you keep cutting your hair it will stunt the growth and not grow as long as it used to?"
Thank you so much and sometimes I am in awe at myself, lol. Unfortunately there really is no set way to discover your predetermined length. Many times you can get an estimate through females in your family if they are taking extraordinary good care of their hair but even then sometimes it can be different regarding your own :)
glad u guys are back! still in awe of your hair and what it takes to care for it. you talking about your childhood and hair takes me back to a school pic w/ a jackson 5 fro and days of having a curl. i remember having to go to a specialist in s. dakota to get my 1st curl...my mom wasn't an accidental hair guru. is there anyway to gauge your growth potential? or just looking at a meas. tape and saying well my hair is past 12" at 1/2" a month so my rate of growth is over 2yrs is the best 1 can do?
Thank you!!!!! I stopped wearing weaves which was the culprit because I was putting too much stress on my hairline through bad weave techniques (I am a advocate of good weave hair techniques because I do feel they can be a great protective style if worn correctly). I have been natural for 6 years. I big chopped 6 years ago which left me with an inch of hair in length.
Thank you!!! Well you seem to have the norm in growth since you are only two years into your journey and you also have to take into account if you dust, trim or had any split ends or breakage over the years. It really does take much more than 2 years to figure out your predetermined length :)

Thanks for the education, girl, I didn't actually believe the thing about potential length before! I love your whole style, you are gorg~
Hello Lovely :D Well I would suggest finding protective styles you love! When I wore braids when I was younger I wore all types of styles and updos. Thank you for this video. You are right we do have a predetermined length and I think I've reached mine. I needed to hear that so I could stop stressing over why after 50 years I still do not have shoulder length hair. Now i can relax and cut it into a flattering style!!1
Your welcome but really my pleasure:D So true!!!! A shorter growth cycle does not mean "short" hair in length by any means. :D

Oh your welcome!!! A healthy diet improves all aspects of our body including hair
Glad to be back!!! Thank you :D
Thank you for this realistic video. Everyone's hair is unique.
you are sooooo right!
Thanks
Yes, I actually just shot a video interview with her that will be up soon :D
Thank you so much. I created it on a whim while detangling. Which is when I create most of my hairstyles, lol :D
I love your calm energy, you're so soothing to listen to. And you're stunning as well
I remember having medium thick ponytails as a kid of 5.
Thank you so much and the collar is a reconstructed piece from Urban Outfitters :D
Good for you :DDD You definitely have an early start and thank you so much! We are deeply flattered
Love the vid :) when I was a kid, my hair was always shoulder length and it grew soo much. It grew to waist length. I'm glad my mom oiled it too:)
Great video.... thanks for sharing. Keep posting and we'll keep watching!
Knowledge is power in every aspect of life.
Oh goodness gracious!!! Then bless your heart!!! Thank you and my pleasure to share :D
Thank you, so glad you are finding the info useful!!! Love and greetings right back from New York, New York :D
My pleasure :D No, not at all! I honestly did not feel a thing!
I loved the knowledge you gave in this video. You ladies are always very helpful, both in your videos and on your website. Thank you for the info:-).
Very informative. I have a question. How do you feel about an old tale I have been told about cutting your hair. "If you keep cutting your hair it will stunt the growth and not grow as long as it used to?"
You are absolutely right!!! We can never learn enough, never! :D
I'm so glad I found your RUclips channel, it's very inspirational and informative, much liove from me back in England
See this is what i like, being educated, going deeper..yes, yes, YES!!!
Your welcome and glad you found the info useful :D
You always have me kah-rackin' up! The part about ppl braiding the hair on their legs? OMGoodness. Lol.
Nice video Cipriana and excellent information.
