    If you are going into the cold please remember that when you get into extreme cold or extreme hot like the sauna for the first 40 seconds your body exaggerates the temperature and increases your anxiety levels to make you aware that the temperature has changed. It is a type of warning system. So when you do it just remember after 40 seconds the temperature will actually level off and your body will calm down.

      This is an excellent point and is I think one of the powerful lessons of the activity is that you can have all of the alarms going off telling you danger when in fact your wiser self knows that you are safe and can reassure that panicked self that you will get through it and it will get easier and it will get easier

    • @FLGurl

      Great point! I have a sauna blanket (think of a heating pad the size of a sleeping bag). Every time that I get into it, the first minute I have to take my mind to the happy places to focus on the most happiest of memories because of the change in temperature. Doing this, sometimes I will fall asleep while in it. Thankfully, there is a timer which shuts down the heat after 30, 45 or 60 minutes (your choice). Living in Florida, I use this in the morning before the temperatures outside get too warm. I am going to be incorporating Wim's method -- I just have to juggle the timing of the cold with the heat from the sauna.

      Just like when I use to wash ice cold chains in hot sudsy water to disinfect them. My hands surprisingly functioned far better into the action than at the beginning when feeling the initial discomforts. I was a child and I was amazed that I could do this feat. It is also just like wet mits in winter that freeze - uncomfortable at first and then, voila, there is actually warmth and comfort inside those cold mits.

    @artriot4758 3 года назад +1001

    Hey Russell. I've been doing this as long as you, and this is what I've gotten so far.
    1. First, it taught me that after a brief moment of discomfort, it wasn’t that hard after all and I actually now really enjoy it. That encouraged me to take that attitude towards other things I preferred to put off. Starting that report, dealing with insurance, going to a meeting I didn’t want to. I just let myself dive in and take those first moments knowing they might be less than pleasant and get it done. It really helped me get my shlt together.
    2. Don’t think about getting in. Just get in. You thoughts aren’t making things better or easier. Why work against your own decision to do something good for you?
    3. After a week or so, I didn’t just feel invigorated, I felt like it was a personal reboot. I do it twice a day, now. It helped me start the day and helped me clear off the stuff that I don’t want to carry into the future. I felt hooked on it.
    4. After a few weeks, I realized that a lot of what I thought were my thoughts and feelings were just residue of daily experience. I just collected moods, slights, unfinished thoughts, irritations and anxieties into my body and carried them around like they were me. They’re not me. They are just crap accumulations of memories in my body. After a while, I felt like not only was I cleaning out the daily stuff, I was making progress on the long term stuff I mistakenly thought was me, my mood, my nature, my concerns. I can’t wait to see how far this goes.
    Sadhguru says the water in your body is accumulating memory and it should be washed away.
    5. My hair and skin look amazing.
    6. Hey, I know it is a privilege thing to act as if it is a big deal you were dunked in cold water for a few minutes. It’s not a big deal. Billions of people don’t get a choice. It is getting in touch your thoughts and feelings that’s a big deal and for some people this might be a way to do it. Stop being such a domesticated animal

    I've been doing the Wim Hof Method for 8 months, cold showers & breathing. I do ice baths to and I love it. My body healed all immflamation, and helped me de stress. When I do the breathing exercises, I sometimes feel a light touch on my pelvic area. I also hear static and cicadas, as well as tingling and body temperature changing. When I do my breathing exercises, I try stay still, and close my eyes. Just recently I saw a spark, it showed itself, then gone. Very quick, but clear. I've learnt that we can only gain from here, and to keep going. This has saved me...for anyone who is confused, fustrated, over thinking, to much chatter in your head, do this. I've been doing cold showers for 50 years now that I learned from Kundalini Yoga practice. It always jolts me into reality, lifts me out of pain and depression and I naturally utter Wahe Guru (the mantra raises the energy too and means I feel the guru within me and everywhere) after a minute or so. But the best benefit is that I rarely feel cold and my wardrobe pretty much consists of short sleeve shirts with an occasional sweater--even though I live in a 4 season climate in Japan. But then...people think you are weird or superhuman---which is kind of a kick too, when all it really is is the yogic lifestyle of cold showers and deep breathing (i like breath of fire a lot). Actually there are a lot of Japanese that like standing under waterfalls--there's a nice one by my house and the busiest day is the first of the year (and it is cold!)Blessings to you all and especially to anyone who has read this!

      Always had dry skin/scalp problems and really bad dandruff. Also used to always find huge wads of hair in the drain after my showers. I'm now convinced that it was just from taking scalding hot showers because I rarely have issues anymore after switching to cold showers and also doing cold plunges. My skin and hair have never felt better and I never have to clean hair out of the drain anymore. Hot showers seemed to be literally causing my hair to fall out! How fast did it come into effect and did you experience any withdrawals or did your mind and body actually change like opiate addicts and ibogaine? May I ask the type of painkiller but you needn't answer? I could see myself doing this method... meditation etc I find utterly impossible but when you're physically doing something to your body I find it so much easier to get into a meditative state. It's like how ear acupuncture really weirdly helped heroin/Buprenorphine withdrawal. When the slight pain was there it was really nice to have it to concentrate on and quiet the mind without it wandering off onto trains of thought, holistic approaches to things are the way but psychedelics are just telling me the world is too dark a place at the minute and I should be helping but I don't know how I can so I get caught in a real life acid loop of taking valium/xanax almost to pause my thought while I come up with the solution to my problems but it never comes and the cycle repeats I could see this similar to extreme acupuncture which could make me think nah I don't need to eat six I'll take 3 and hopefully carry on from there as I've relapsed on benzos so much they refuse any more reduction plans which is fair enough. I shouldn't really say this but heroin and then methadone/subutex was a walk in the park withdrawal wise and I've stayed off opiates for a year and 7 months now. Generally woke seems to have a meaning of 'correctness' in every area of life, eg supporting diversity, limiting your carbon footprint, being a vegan. those who blame others for being "woke" seem annoyed and feel pressured to live according such high 'moral' values as well, saying it takes away their freedom to live their life as they please.

    I started to Wim Hof about 4 months ago. I have an autoimmune disease that affects my eyes and at the time I started these methods I was due my 5th eye operation where a steroid implant is put inside of my eye. I had been in a constant flare for 3 years and had tried a series of medications like steroids and immunosuppressants which suppress my symptoms (and immune system) with a range of other nasty side effects. Without these medications/operations I face sight loss so was a constant battle. ANYWAYS, long story short - since starting to have cold showers everyday my flare up of 3 years has subsided. I am fully aware that this could be related to factors outside of my control that I am not aware of but I am also 100% open to the possibility that cold showers have somehow helped me.

    I did the Wim Hoff method, along with morning pages, last year after feeling quite low with the whole Covid thing and not being able to see my kids and grandchildren. It changed my life so much. The cold shower was something I was afraid of as I hated cold water. I didn't know why until I took my first one then memories came back of bathing in front of the fire when I was younger and having to get out the bath and the awful cold as my mum put the towel around me. That's when it hit me. After the shower when I put the towel around me and how amazing it felt. I persevered and I found I got used to it. I live in Spain and where we live the sea is always freezing and last year I actually managed to get in and swim around with the few others and felt part of a special club. I was so proud of myself. I think Wim Hoff should be taught in school from teens to get them through those harder years and to give them a sense of self and self strength to carry then forward. It's natural and amazing.

We live in a hot climate so there's not really any place where we can dive in together in a lake or something. Thanks for sharing this! It's helping me spiritually, physically and physiologically.

    Thanks to Wim Hof method I use a full on garden hose shower outside with full blast attachment (in the U.K.) at least once a day and river swim when I can. In two months I have become addicted. I’m interested to see whether I keep going throughout the winter, I hope so. Yes, it wakes me up in the morning and after years of being disassociated I am finally starting to feel connected with my self and my body.

I feel extremely positive and optimistic. Even after losing my fur baby (cat) companion who was with me for 20 years, I expressed my grief, but never slipped into depression. Also, my hormones have completely balanced and I went from having hot flashes 8 x a day (prior to cold baths) to having zero hot flashes after 30 days of cold baths. Something that has interested me in the WimHof method is that I was doing something similar before I knew it had a name. Years ago I got used to the cold by simply "accepting the cold", which is what I called my method, by breathing in the cold in and holding it for a few seconds cuz I noticed that when I held my breath I didn't shiver as much, if at all, and controlling my breathing took my mind off the cold. So here, maybe a decade later I learn of this method and I'm ready to dive in

    I went to NYC to see Jordan Peterson live. The next day, upon a recommendation, I went to a Russian Banya specifically to get into the ice pool. I had listened to Wim on a podcast and was convinced that ‘he’s onto something’. 😂 Well, I got to the banya at 11 am and left at 5 pm. I alternated between sauna and ice pool. You’re right Russell, do not feel the water before you get into it--just plunge yourself into it. First plunge I think my brain stopped momentarily then I counted to 7 and got out. By the end of my day I was in the ice pool without a care in the world. Okay, I left that place and felt like my skin had been replaced. It was reptilian! I went out for dinner and was asked what I wanted to drink--I said wine and then said “No. Just…..water.” I didn’t want anything to poison my feeling. Then I walked 2 hours back to my hotel. I felt like a stick of dynamite! I slept like a newborn child. Wim Hof Method? It’s an elixir!

    Then early this year, I started again. Breathwork after meditation in the morning and then 5 minute cold showers. This was all in preparation for my first ice plunge, on my 60th birthday, in our pond. I walked through snow to get to it, and friends recorded a video for me. I felt absolute Zen and peace, unlike anything I'd experienced recently. I continue to this day, although our pond isn't ice cold any longer. I've been doing Wim Hoff breathing for around 260 days, typically 4-5 rounds. In watching this I realized that I somehow had the idea that you hold your in-breath as long as possible, just as you do the out breath, but Russell said the in-breath is just for 15 sec. Well, I'll probably keep doing it the same way as I like how it feels.
    I do the cold immersion separately (just after the breathing) and not always ... too long an explanation, but it isn't practical at home (other than short cold showers), but I live in Chicago right next to Lake Michigan, and I do cold immersion in the lake year-round (this eliminates at least four months when it's cool, but not quite cold enough).
    I've found myself craving the cold immersion, so much so that (I bite my proverbial tongue while admitting) I wish for the winter months to come sooner so I can get that awesome relief every day. I deal with low-grade chronic pain, and also have struggled with anxiety and frequent low moods (especially in the morning). I can't say enough good about how this cold immersion helps, like hitting a reset button every morning. It also definitely helps to ease my pain, at least a little. The breathing also is a sort of reset button, and I do it lying down with bolsters under my knees and upper body, which feels awesome. I consider these practices a daily part of my mental & physical self-care, along with gentle yoga, consuming turmeric shots (mixed with other healthy stuff like apple cider vinegar), eating reasonably healthy in general, a moderate amount of more vigorous exercise and things like positive self-talk and participation in SMART Recovery. All of these things have helped me manage my emotions and stay sober, and give me ways to stay healthy and feel well when I do not have the income or access to health insurance.

      @Darren I'm happy that Christianity provides you with peace and comfort. That is not the case for everyone. And I would (from a place of kindness) encourage you to really think about what you're saying when you claim you are in sole possession of the truth, and that everyone who doesn't believe what you do is wrong. Believing that your way of thinking and your religion is the only truth is a means of using religion to serve your ego. In that way, religion is creating a sense of superiority and conflict. There are many religions and there are many healthy and true ways to live one's life.

    • @HollyMcLaughlinArt
      @HollyMcLaughlinArt 3 года назад +5

      @Ben Höflinger Yes, I agree that physical discipline can lead to spiritual growth. Discipline and struggle are ways of evolving the consciousness and transcending the ego. I respectfully do not agree that the journey needs to result in being a born again Christian. But I am happy that way of life has given you peace and purpose.

    • @HollyMcLaughlinArt
      @HollyMcLaughlinArt 3 года назад +6

      @Ben Höflinger I do understand your point...or what I think is the point you are making. Are you saying that it would feel more purposeful if we know there is one true source of spirituality...one true religion?...rather than the feeling that we're all sort of just making up what works for us as we go? If that's what you are saying, I hear your view in that...I really do. From my perspective, a religion (such as Christianity, just because that's what I am most familiar with) can't even agree amongst themselves. So it certainly doesn't make me, who doesn't find the Christian narrative appealing to begin with, believe that Christians have found the one truth. Again, I'm not trying to pick on Christians...it's just the religion of which I am most knowledgeable. I also view religious beliefs as filtered through human thought, which I don't trust. I know my own thoughts often aren't true, so I'm not keen on trusting another's thoughts on what is the right lifestyle for me. Would it be easier if we all followed the same religion because we all knew for a fact that was the one true thing? Maybe. But I don't see that as ever being a possibility. What I do see a possibility is people following whatever lifestyle is most compelling for them and allows for them to achieve the most self-growth while not harming others. I also feel a kind of peace in being okay with the unknown and with not knowing...being okay with uncertainty (as far as "is there a god? is there an afterlife?" type thoughts). You are right that there is a lot to ponder. I am okay with others coming up with different answers than me, and just want that same consideration in return. Thank you for your respectful conversation. I appreciate it, and I in no way mean to disrespect your religion or lifestyle when I disagree with it or don't find it compelling for living my own life that way.

    LOVE the cold baths! It’s been over 2 weeks now and I’ve been progressively adding more ice cubes. It totally changes my day. Wakes me up like a triple espresso, I’m able to sit in the cold longer (12mins now) and my energy is solid throughout the day. Also small pains here and there that I’ve been having have either gone or reduced massively. Probably the greatest perk is the ability to stick to my other goals better - cold teaches you being ok with being uncomfortable! So it’s easier to stick to eg. not eating sugar. I dry brush my body while the bath is filling up and the jump in! LOVE THE COLD!!!! 😃

    I started April 1st this year with cold showers(no tub available), and have swam in natural cold water a few times. I have done the breathe work on and off for the last 2 years. Strangely, I have not yet combined the two. The cold, In the morning for me, brings right now into focus. I enjoy the cold showers. It is interesting, since not long ago I could not bring myself to bathe daily, and at one point did so only maybe 3 times a month. Heavy dark place to be, alone. I also feel this will be a life long addition to my daily routine. I am also confident I will combine the breathe work and cold water exposure together, with more benefits to my mental and physical self.

    Yep! This is part of my daily formula. Yup to 3 and a half mins breath hold and 2 plus min freezing cold shower. Totally game changer. I want to help the world feel this good.!!

      @Darren kundalini & breathwork defintely clears my mind and energises me. I don't approach it so much as a spiritual practice, & def not religious. It makes my mind& body feel healthier. Oxygen is good!

      @Darren as an atheist who doesn't even believe that there is such a thing as a spirit i've found wim hof's practices to be very physically beneficial which has the knock on effect of being mentally beneficial. so with all due respect, your personal beliefs are kind of irrelevant. just as mine are to anyone who has a different set of beliefs. all russell is doing is sharing a positive experience that's been beneficial. i don't get the need to tear him down?

      @@davidcunningham9282 What Daren was trying to say in a much easier way is the power that you get from this stems from the one who is the author of making oneself like god. Satan. Yes you get results and will for a time but a day will come where he cashes in so to speak. Nothing wrong with understanding your body and mind but dont blindly get into something, some things unseen require payment in the end.

    The first time I tried Wim Hofs breathing meditation, I did it with two good friends of mine & about halfway through I started feeling very primal like I was tapping into a time before civilised behaviour; my monkey-self. The sort of rapid breathing, to me in that state, related to how animals act just before getting into a fight but because we ARE accustomed to civilised behaviour I had the awareness to observe, from a wild state, my friends around me & I couldn't help but notice that this was how early human beings felt as tribes were originally formed. I felt an incredibly strong sense of community.
    I highly recommend doing this on a regular basis, it'll make you a more humble/friendlier human being in the world.

    It is absolutely one of my favorite things to do. It helps with my mental and physical well being. Anxiety and depression as well as inflammation has been improved by leaps just with one ice swim. I honestly can’t believe how good it feels. I know I sound like a commercial but I am quite serious. I will definitely do this for the rest of my life.

    I had excruciating back pain from a muscle injury. I took a Wim Hof certified instructor led workshop and did the breathing followed by ice plunges. I did 2 ice plunges - 2 minutes and 5 minutes.
    Of course Ice has an immediate effect on pain and swelling- but the amazing thing was that my symptoms were gone for the following 72 hours. 5 minutes of Ice for 3 days of no pills, side effects and just great living! That is healing treatment.

    I heard about this and thought there is no way I could do this. But I’m going to give it a try. I also do yoga and breathing exercises but this is at a whole new level. I’m going to look into doing a 30 day challenge and I’ll see if my husband would be inclined to do it with me. Thank you Russell for sharing. I enjoy your videos and your perspective.

    Win The Morning Win The Day is a growing movement. It involves an early meet up (6am) walk, talk,moment of reflection, then a cold dip. I have joined the Laleham group on the Thames. Cold water swimming has changed my life. Everything said in video resonates with me. I try to swim at least twice a week in the river with no wetsuit. ITS AMAZING . Thanks for sharing

    I’ve tried starting everyday with cold exposure and it really gives your first several hours of the day a different level of energy and alertness. Although I really don’t feel like doing it every morning, I know I won’t feel nearly as good if I skip it.
