That final line from Shadow is one of the most powerful lines in cinematic history. That line and the wince from Chance is heartbreaking. Powerful scene. Greatest ever Disney film. Criminally underrated. I now have a Golden Retriever because of this film.
"But I WANT you with me. I love you, Shadow." That part breaks my heart, even more so now knowing someday soon I'll have to say goodbye to Evinrude, my cat, who's been my best friend for 16 years. I don't know how I'm going to manage without him and his constant presence in my life, his silly antics, his affection. It's just going to destroy me.
Great work by the late dog Ben the dog (that portrayed shadow) and the late don ameche who did the voice of shadow. Rest in peace to both Ben and Don ameche.
When I was little I've watched this movie enough times to break the tape. And I still cry... But mostly at the part when Sassy and Chance are home and they keep calling out for Shadow, then the family gives up and then BOOM shadow comes out. ^^
I think why this scene is so sad is because throughout the whole film, shadow looks out for and protects and looks out for chance and sassy. Now its so shocking to see shadow in such a helpless state but the tears come when we realize how we didnt realize how much shadow has gained in chance who now wont give up on him in the darkest moment of all. Chance, who's leaned on shadow the whole movie, is shadows true friend through and through, at this point and the way the story shows this resonates with us all
"im so sick of nature, i could puke! after this i intend to live indoors on a velvet cushion filled with bird feathers, and be served fillet of mouse on a silver platter!" xD i remember watching this movie at school..and i cried SO much..
i'm so naming my next dog shadow. this scene is beatiful. it broke my heart as child, and it breaks my heart now. "I won't let you give up." I have tears in my eyes right now... I'm not even kidding.
This part makes me tear up but the part that really gets me is right after this when Sassy and Chance come running home and poor Peter is looking for Shadow. When he doesn't see Shadow he tries to keep from crying and then all of a sudden Shadow comes limping over the hill and ... yeah ... *bawls*. Fast Fact: Only two movies that I've ever cried in: Where the Red Fern Grows and Homeward Bound.
Oh yeah, I start crying here and don't stop till the end... I love this movie... It's the only movie I've ever seen my father cry over (though he denies it to this day, hehe)
its the bit where he says how hard it is for him to admit how hard it is (how he can't do it now he's old) that gets him going. Go on Shadow we know you can do it!
shadow : do u think its easy for me to admit i carnt do it? im too old! chance: thats not true , there's nothing you can't do! shadow: i have nothing more to give chance , and its time for you to be on ur own. chance:but i want you with me , i love you shadow. :( . shadow: you've learned everything you need. . chance , now all you have to learn is how to say goodbye. chance: (sad sigh) . . .i wont let you give up. omg thats like sooo sad!! :'( .x x x
I loved this movie when I was a little and I love it still. So strange to see this original version. Voices are pretty same but in finnish dubs Shadow is Jalo which means high-minded and Change is Hans (I don't know why) Sassy is Sissi but it's sounds pretty like Sassy. Thanks for uploading this!
Powerful scene you got us this far now I’m getting you the rest of the way even things were bad I always believed we make because you were to stubborn to quit but your not gonna quit not now not when we’re this close NOW TRY AGAIN
Portland Oregon. I've been to that train yard. Looks alot different. The entire film was filmed in Oregon. From the East Oregon to central oregon to Western Oregon.
That's where the famous Daylight steam locomotive No. 4449 and SP&S 700 were based at, but now Oregon rail Heritage Center along with OR&N 197! I been there (the city) to see the Daylight locomotive!
That Southern Pacific train yard takes place in Portland OR, 0:15 and there's Brooklyn Roundhouse, That's where the Famous Daylight steam locomotive No. 4449, and SP&S 700 is based at (now they're along with OR&N 197 based at Oregon Rail Heritage Center as the roundhouse was demolished in 2012)!
the reason why in the book the old one is chance and shadow is a lab not a golden retriever is because there is movies called Homeward Bound 1 and 2 but there is also the original movie called The incredible journey where there is a short haired himalayan cat named Tao and the dog is named something different and he is the old one and he is a bull terrier, and then the younger dog is a labrador. And thats the book you read. Also in Homeward Bound they talk and in Incredible Journey they dont.
Years, since I can recall kindergarten it has been impossible for me to watch this movie without crying, the acting, the sound chemistry of the dog whines and mannerisms. Always makes me sob
That part was the best. It really shows Chance's character development throughout the film. In the beginning he was all I hate this mushy stuff and here he realizes what love truly is. Ironically Shadow said the word to Peter and here Chance says it to him.
My oldest dog has a massive tumor in her spleen and has to be put down later this week. My youngest dog has been moping by her side. She helped me train that pup and she (the pup) learned so much from her and this is how I imagine their conversation going.
@patient451 I'm sure the dog who did the 'stunt' is not the same dog you see just before. The board was probably set to lower on one side and the dog to slide down a bit. It then cuts to a totally different shot of the wood breaking and a stuffed furry thing was thrown into the hole with it. The dust helps hide the fakeness. As for Shadow climbing, I think those bits were probably done in a studio set with a reconstructed 'pit' and the other shots filmed at the location with camera in the pit.
The frist time I saw this I thought shadow died, and then when he talked I thought he was never going to make it out...so yes I cried! I love this movie!!
"You've learned everything you need, Chance. Now all you have to learn is how to say goodbye." Dang, imagine if this was your dying parent's last words on their deathbed.
People criticize the "fake out death" cliche, especially in kids' movies, but I think this is one instance where it works. It would've been meaningful if Shadow had died here and Chance learned to live on without his mentor, but it's arguably even more meaningful to imply that Chance took on his mentor's role by "pushing him the rest of the way." Chance truly matured by becoming to Shadow what Shadow had been to him.
This scene breaks my heart because I think about the poor dog having to act the scene. You know he was down in that mud pit for a long ass time shooting different takes. And they probably hung a fat T-bone steak from a string at the top of the mud pit and taunted him with it when they were getting the shot of him trying to jump out
What Shadow was climbing up wasn't probably as high as they made out anyway. The close up of Chance going into the pit there was probably someone holding him and the wide shot he was probably trained and safe to fall that far with something off camera to catch him. They mute the entire footage (the original sound would probably have been the trainers commanding the animals) add the music, character voices and any additional animal noises would be preformed by Frank Welker and added into the mix.
@Mia Tune Where The Red Fern Grows made me cry too. Even the book made me cry! Other dog movies that made me cry are: Fluke,My Dog Skip,Benji,Marley & Me,and Homeward Bound 1 and 2.
