@0:38, it looks like the std oxy acetylene torch, not the "exothermic cutting torches".
@ 0:56 -- For those who many not be familiar with the exothermic cutting torch -- An oxygen lance / burn bar is being used to cut the girder rather than a oxy acetylene torch. The lance can be long, allowing the cutting to be at distance from the worker. This burns hot enough that the steel in the girders react with the oxygen, and work well under water, too. The lance is itself consumed as fuel. Quick, low cost, efficient and probably as safe or safer than other methods in part because the lance can be as long as it can be maneuvered and held in place. Thermite could also be used to cut. Efficient cutting depends upon high temp and minimal evolution of gas but enough to clear away the melted metal.

Here’s the problem with you comparison of this catastrophe with a car accident. The economic impact of this tragedy will effect the entire region, so the motive for a bad actor to cause such a mishap is real, whereas a random car accident simply doesn’t. Second, the redundant Safety systems onboard ships of this class make it highly unlikely that they just oopseid their way into that Pilar.

I watched a couple of excellent videos about this. One was from a tug boat guy and another was from an engineer who operates this exact kind of container ship. Tug boat guy says you can only use a tug to position a ship that large around when it's docked. The engineer guy showed all the redundant systems on the ship and how you can operate the rudder from the engine room if everything else fails. There's basically two of everything on opposite sides of the ship so if one side gets damaged the other side will still be able to operate the ship. He didn't speculate much on what might have happened only he did show how it was really low odds for something like this to have happened. I took that to mean that someone really screwed up somehow.

Before the Dali can be moved, the bridge segments have to be cut up and removed, the hazardous materials dealt with, and hull damage repaired enough to refloat the vessel. It's going to be a difficult operation. Thanks for the update.

Weighing the amount of shipping traffic and the number of years in that the bridge was standing vs this accident, I would say that the lane was safe and that there was no need to be overly cautious. This was a freak accident, nothing more.

The reason your final bridge camera video frames are missing:➡️ IP security cameras write their video to a memory buffer prior to it being transmitted as data. There is commonly several seconds of video in the memory buffer that will be lost when the power goes out. This is different than the older CCTV systems that send an analog video signal to a centralized video recorder.

I see tremendous lengths of cable and fiber to power cameras and message equipment at some pretty long distances. I see fiber runs longer than power runs mostly. My guess is these like many roadside ITS cameras are on a fiber network and that fiber network was taken down at the start of the collapse. My best guess is this is why the camera feed failed at the moment of impact.

6:40 At 4:04 you can see that the second pillar (which is actually first in the direction of travel of MS Dali) has not scratched the substantially overhanging part of the bow section.
My thinking is: First the second pillar got in contact with the overhanging bow section. For a while it withstood the forces and cut/crashed into the bow. That is the open part which has that vertical profile now. ( 4:36 ) Once more of the hull exerted pressure on the pillar (more of the lower parts coming into contact and being cut / pressed in) the more force acted on the pillar. Eventually the pillar gave in and fell. With only one pillar standing on that side of the tower (formed by two pillars of the total of four) the second tumbled and collapsed. Then the other two came down. The three remaining pillars crumbled and the bridge superstructure made it fall away from the ship. Therefore we don't see any more damage on the side of the hull. Only from fallen pieces of the girder construction.
The bow did not shear through in my view. Once enough area of the hull had contacted the pillar the force simply pushed it over. Whether that can be called shearing I am not sure. Shearing needs two surfaces. One moving, the hull, and one resting or counteracting, the air? So I think it is bending. But I may be wrong.

I've seen a lot of comments from people talking about the "sharp right turn". I think this is a perspective problem - looking at the video, the camera is not pointed straight down the channel running under the bridge. It's southWEST of pillar the MV Dali struck, so it "looks" like the ship took a sharp right turn, but it didn't.
The track from AIS shows a gradual drift to starboard, which (to me, at least), would be consistent with other forces - current (water was flowing out of the river and harbor as it was about an hour before low tide), wind (winds were very light to non-existent, from what I've read, but stacked full of containers the MV Dali would present a very large sail area, depending on where the winds were coming from) and possible (incorrect) corrective actions.
It'll be interesting to see the final report from the NTSB.

    • @thehark6247

no it wont be interesting because the ntsb is gonna read whatevr script theyve been handed. The video showing the sharp turn onto the target had nothing to do with the lights, or Autopilot or wind or currants proves The HUMAN FINGERPRINT is all over this deliberate turn into the Bridge. Heavy smoke from the engine funnel is caused by a sudden increase in fuel to the engine that provided strong water pushed onto the now hard-turned-to Starboard rudder? • @facts_over_feelings
      @facts_over_feelings Месяц назад +1

RUclipsr, Luke McFadden, had a good explanation of why the ship started to veer starboard right before the point of impact. When the power came back on before the ship lost power for the second time, the captain probably put it in full reverse. With the size of the massive propellers on the ship turning counter-clockwise, the stern of the ship starts to "walk" to the left and with the continued forward motion of the ship, it starts to drift right. That's probably why you see the massive smoke cloud coming from the engines, because of the full reverse.

    • @themadoneplays7842

@@thehark6247 No there was not, and the black smoke was from the attempted restart of the ship's engines, not some evil plot by the government/Ukraine/China or whatever flavor of asinine conspiracy theory you may subscribe to.
You want to know why I think the crash was not intentional? Look at all the video footage after the ship crashed, the ship almost missed the bridge entirely and only hit the support beam, due to the ship's overhang.
Again, the main video we see of the crash makes it look like the crash was intentional due to the camera's angle.
As for the smoke, again this was from the attempt to restart the ship's engines.
The Dali uses a diesel powered engine and as such when it restarts it needs to clean the engine out from build up.
This isn't like the internal combustion engine in your car, if you ever wondered why a semi truck sometimes sits idling on the side of the road and now and then you see smoke come out of it, this is why.
In any case there are many other signs this was likely an accident such as:
The crew being able to radio warning that the ship could potentially hit the ship.
The crew attempting to restore power in the short amount of time they had and the time all this happened.
If this was some kind of plot why the hell do it at 1:00AM when there's minimal traffic, if the goal was to kill as many people as possible they sure as hell did a bad job.
Now maybe if the goal was to cause economic problems then maybe you would have a point but still all this will do is cause inconveniences that while have some impact on our economy, but it's not going to cause markets to crash.
Maybe a little economic downturn, but it's very recoverable.
In any case this all looks like an accident to me given all the information I have on the matter.
Not by "the liberal left wing communist media" but by videos like this that have no political biases.

These are traffic cameras, not real time action cameras. Most likely they record and buffer the data, so it's not exactly real time, so if it loses power you can lose what was recorded but not yet compressed and sent out.
For their intended purpose, seeing how bad the traffic is, delays of minute or two don't really matter.

@dannelliawoodley8239 there's nothing fishy about it. What people don't seem to get is that anything with that much weight moving can't be stopped on a dime like a small vehicle. Especially in the water. The ship lost power and drifted. Current, tide and wind can all be factors. Planes train ship all have to plan ahead to maneuver according to conditions. Losing power will affect many things. We won't know what happened for a while yet. It's usually a chain of events that go wrong.

Jeffoffstoff, if you look again I believe that those dolphins were for the telecommunication towers that are parallel to the bridge. Likely why they were so small. Comm towers had bumpers/concrete barriers but the bridge didnt. Priorities in 1970 I guess.

What a treat to listen to a rationalist instead of fools with zero evidence. Thanks Jeff

I can tell you facts. This accident would not have happened if those tugs would have stayed with the ship till they got past any important structures and out to open seas.

$2 billion accident caused by complacency. Sure wouldn't have hurt.

This has got to be orchestrated. Im not surprised the government is footing the bill and i wonder which construction company gets the no-bid contract. I would like to know which politician the CEO or owner of that company has ties with. Its not a conspiracy. This happens a lot in govenment. They term "payola" exists for a reason.

Bless you Jeff for being one of our modern Dragnet Sgt Joe Friday's "Just the facts" guys along with so many others like Neil de Grasse Tyson. The more we have, the more we quash the 'disinformation mafia'! Keep it up! 👍

I live right by the bridge. I took it twice a day for 14 years. I went to see the wreckage and it's like visiting a graveyard. To know that there's guys trapped underneath all of that just breaks my heart. I hope they retrieve their bodies ASAP so their families can have some closure.

I dont understand why the DPW crew didn’t have a radio for safety purposes so they could have been warned. They had about 4 minutes that the officer was going to go warn them after another car came to relieve him. This was totally avoidable. Im praying for all the families involved

Most of the electronics on Dali would be Chinese & they have many reasons for checking how much damage they can do - just ask Kristin Noem
