I use the Battenkill III with 5wt 8’ fiberglass fly rod. I fish it on the Gunnison River in Colorado. It’s an excellent gold medal fishery and it’s a blast with the clickpawl battenkill. 💯

Thanks for the review, man. I was going to get a off brand reel with drag, but after seeing your review, I pulled the trigger on one. It was hard to beat since Orvis has them for 69.00 with free shipping. I have an older Battenkill large arbor that I just gave to my son. Hopefully we'll be catching fish and not just looking cool! Tight lines.

Thank you for the review, picked up a Battenkill II to pair with my Orvis Recon, can't wait to try it out.

Would this be a good choice if I’m coming for a SUPER budget Martin caddie creek fly reel?
I love the ability to control the line with my fingers and not have to rely on a disc drag system
EDIT: does this have a ON/OFF button for the clicker as well?

You really need a 70 - 90g reel to balance that rod better (ie, 2.1 - 3.1oz weigh reel, and not 4.4oz)

You quoted the weight of the Battenkill 1 DISC model. The Battenkill 1 being discussed is not the disc version and weighs 2.8 oz. @@Shawn-ts4jw
