I really like Ah Duo, although she barely appears in this first season. And really, someone with such a cool characterization can't be just any character.
This is a detail only really mentioned in the books, but the pavilion colors are associated with the pavilion itself and not the specific concubine living in it- so the next concubine who occupies the Garnet Pavilion will also wear black/dark colors.
This may or may not be a spoiler, but Ah-Duo went into labor the same time as the then-Empress (current Emperor's mother). I forgot why, but they essentially switched the two babies at birth, hence why Jinshi was raised as the current Emperor's brother (his actual brother dying from the honey). With regards to Lishu (the child concubine), it was actually because of Ah-Duo and the current Emperor that nothing happened to her. This is why Lishu feels a very strong attachment to Ah-Duo. As to why Jinshi is where he is... RAFO
The episodes already went over everything you mentioned, so no worries about potentially spoilers, I knew all that information :) To add further explanation, though, I’m not confused at all about the babies being switched. Me wondering about Jinshi is specifically in regards to why he seems to not make appearances, and even seems to be hiding his relation to the royal family entirely (don’t want that answered yet though, as THAT would indeed would a spoiler 😆). Also, the Lishu part is already elaborated on in this set of episodes as well ☺️
These were some of my favorite episodes in the show. It really made the show feel less like an anime and more like a Chinese historical drama that happened to be animated. It also does a good job of laying the groundwork for future mysteries. I won't spoil anything I hadn't thought of as I was watching the episodes themselves, but now that we have established Jinshi's alleged backstory, all I wanted to know was what Maomao's whole deal was. So her father was a doctor in the palace, he was castrated and exiled, and now he continues to practice medicine while teaching her like one would an apprentice. So that means, unless she was conceived before his exile, he's not her biological father. So now my question was who her parents are. My theory was that her mother worked in the brothel, which would explain why the other women treated her like a little sister and why they gave her the big sendoff like she was a worker getting her contract bought out by a client and was leaving to be his wife or mistress. And Jinshi's response was honestly kinda adorable. Like Maomao thought he was being jealous, but the man clearly remembered her saying she didn't like being ogled at, hence the freckles, and was just trying in his own way to help. He even gets her a present that fits in her niche interests so he clearly cares enough to pay attention and I love the way their bond develops.
It's a little understated, but Jinshi is kind of smitten with MaoMao and it seems that it's because she doesn't fawn all over him. She doesn't want to gain favor with him, or use him at all.
@@fullmetaanalysis 😂 True. It's not completely understated. You are headed towards some of my favorite episodes when all that fantastic foreshadowing falls into place.

I don't think it's even deeper than him wanting to mess with Maomao as much as possible so he keeps upping the stakes until we hit peak creepy.
He's creepy behaviour is deeper than seems

Haha, I agree that he’s smitten, and I completely agree with what you described, though I mighttttt disagree that it’s understated 😄
