Above Barriers - Fly Fishing for Brook Trout off the Beaten Path

- Steelhead fishing on the north shore of Minnesota can be shoulder to shoulder. So we head above the barrier water falls to fly fish for native brook trout.

Excellent video. As a Minnesotan, I also appreciate the fact that you didn't gaslight the location! Large Brookies are a treasured resource that should only be available to those willing to put the work in to find them.
Thanks for watching. In regards to folks asking when and where to go ... In a sense, I understand it ... We live in an age of infinite and accessible knowledge: It’s one click away. But that often robs us from experiencing the pursuit of knowledge.
First time I heard someone say I caught a walleye and sound disappointed 😂
Wonderfully produced video, thank you. I've spent decades haunting the North Shore (along with the UP and my native northern WI) for brookies and the one thing I regret is not paddling back to remote water inaccessible by foot. I appreciate you keeping that dream alive.
Terrific clip! I have a brother who calls the brook trout our family fish. I caught my first one over 60 years ago and then taught my three younger brothers to love and appreciate all that this great fish means/signifies-both their beauty and the purity of the environment they demand. Stalking them along a pristine creek/river far from the thundering crowds is a special, wonder-filled experience. Several years ago a brother and I hiked back into a very remote BWCA brook trout lake and caught at least 25-30 magnificent 15-20 inch specimens. We were the only ones on the lake-for the two days we were there...these were clearly stocked fish but they had to be at least 3 years old. This summer my brother-from Alabama and me-from Kansas will meet in the UP to revisit some of our greatest fishing memories...it is kinda emotional just thinking about it.
I love this song - there's a great video of Charlie playing this in Lutsen. He's great, what a gem.
Parr does make some great tunes.
Incredible vibe and production quality! … literally been smiling the whole time
My dad took me to the Brule River and a creek up there years ago. I got my first brook trout up there on old flies. One, a parachute fly with a tiny slice of cork on the post and a Herters balloon streamer, on a 5’3” Fenwick glass 5 weight. I still remember it like it was yesterday! Great video thanks for sharing!
What a great piece. Well done!
Incredible, well done y’all 👍
Amazing video!
Great video guys👍🏻
Loved the video. I am new to fly fishing, but not Mn or fishing in general. Live in St Cloud and looking forward to coming up country to catch some brown trout. Always wanted to learn to fly but just starting at 60. Love wild MN. Thanks for loving Gods creation and sharing it here.
Awesome film, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Great looking fisherie.
beautiful video love the brooks, get some!
Maith sibh!☘ Good on ye from the west coast of Ireland
Thanks for watching!
Haha I love the explination of the epic journey to get to the waterfall during the introduction only for y'all to be at the one two blocks from the Lester Parking Lot in the video lol. Rest of the video does show a fun little adventure
Thanks for watching. That waterfall wasn’t the destination but an example of a barrier fall that folks typically don’t venture beyond.
The deeps!
Hey, y’all!! Awesome video and trip!! Fellow northern mn fly fisherman here. Not seeking or needing any location info or tips, just curious as to what the flows were/are at when u run this section of river? We do a lot of river float fishing trips like this in the driftless and over on the Wisco brule, but never in my wildest dreams did I think this was a reality along the north shore until my brother showed me this video and I was beyond stoked!! Would it be doable in a canoe and/or kayaks? I’ve been packrafting before, just don’t own one myself (yet). I also know how variable the north shore streams are and how treacherous they can be - making portaging heavy boats tough. Did y’all just show up and send it or did you get some much needed advice from local sources in grand marais? Nonetheless, freaking awesome!!
Great video. I'd pay to do a guided trip there for the serenity. :)
I know where there are plenty of 15-21" brookies. Check my thumbnail pic. Its all i chase.
@@eduffy4937 very impressive buddy! Blessed to have such a place to fish for one of the most exotic trout species.
@@MountainStateAngler yeah they really do capture my heart year round. whenever season is open im out somewhere chasing them except for my annual 2week "vacation" to wyoming for backcountry golden trout. Those fish really bring you to a whole new area than im used to. No trees, little if any vegitation, brutal cold nights, sunburnt days, and an innability to sleep at high elevation. It gets harder for me physically every year as i near 40 years old but ill do it as long as my meat suit allows me to.
Lol - everyone asking or hinting at what river...there's enough clues here to figure it out in the video and comments; I can point to 4 specific things that get me to 99% on the location. Great video by the way and truly remarkable brook trout!
Looks like a fun trip! Great editing! Are you upstream on the river you started at?
How do you go about rafting like this? Do you set up camp upstream and float your way down to a take out then walk the raft back up to camp?
Seems like paddling upstream would be a little tricky here
Loved the video! Hopefully one day I can explore the north shore a little bit. For now it’s a treat just getting up to the Brule….. what techniques were you guys/girl utilizing?
Thank you!
Lots of good old wooly bugger action, with bead head to get down a bit. Can’t speak for the whole crew but I was dead drifting through runs and stripping back up seams. Fun trip.
@@blueforestfilms What Rod/Line setup do you like using for this?
Great video, love your edits and would like to see more. Who is the musician in this?
The musician is Charlie Parr :)
I have been planning a trip up there for this spring and this video got me even more excited. I know you won't share the location but I was wondering what time of year was this?
Late May or early June. Can’t recall with precision. Enjoy your trip!
@@blueforestfilms Thanks so much! I can't wait
@@isaacbell7502 when bugs suffocate youn its time to chase 20" brookies
I heard you have a longer version of this video is that true
We did have a longer version I believe during the editing process but cut it down quite a bit.
How necessary are the rafts? Do
You guys bushwhack your way up stream, set up camp and blow the rafts up and just float down to a spot each day?
They aren't necessary but sure make life easier. Being able to float a significant stretch of river is a bit easier than popping in here and there through the bush.
@@blueforestfilms Cool thanks for the info. How hard is it
To paddle against the current above the barriers? I think I’m gonna try this m!
What you want to do is establish a spot to put in and take out so you’re not paddling upstream, but rather floating downstream. Those rafts are nice because you can put your feet down in the middle and walk the raft downstream as you fish.
what river?? Awesome video
Thank you, Ted. This was a north shore tributary in Minnesota. Lots of brookie water to explore here.
What was the biggest brookie caught there’s some big ones in the video
I can’t recall exactly but the biggest trout were around 16-18 I believe.
Great video. How many days/miles was the float?
It was 2 nights and I believe 20ish miles if I recall. Would have to double check maps. Thanks for watching.
@@blueforestfilms Absolutely. I moved to MN from AK 2 years ago and I'm on the hunt for some overnight river trips for trout that don't require me to be away from my kids for too long. Your video encourages me that this actually exists in MN...now how to get the location out of you...I'll buy the beer?
@@michaelforbes5886 try the upper cloquet river, and the upper brule or beaver. Hint: further you get from people/roads, the fish get bigger. Im holding a nice 20.5" in my thumbnail pic
@@eduffy4937hey man! Seeing this video for the first time.. incredible stuff. I do stuff like this often but just haven’t on the north shore didn’t know it was possible. Fly fished most of the river up there, but not the this one. When u mean the upper, do u mean the north or south branch? Planning this trip and I’m having a hard time deciding the starting point… thanks ahead of time!! Tight lines.
@@brydenurie5485 upper river meaning the first third of the Riverwalk. All are great in most places. Access can be rough but solitude is garaunteed.
Where is this, where is the campground, is this a National or State park???……….Great video just need details, thanks…….
never ask that again. i can tell you don't seriously fish.
Can you give a location of this place??? Where is this place??
NE Minnesota. Lots of great water to explore. Enjoy!
what type of rafts?
Water Master rafts! They’re great.
@@blueforestfilms awesome thank you! awesome videos
