I know people will call me crazy, but tI have to say two things: #1...The keepers DO communicate with the Gorillas... However, if it has been proven, and it has, that we can teach them advanced communication skills with picture boards and the like...isn't there an ethical mandate to educate them accordingly to the highest level possible? Just like we have an ethical mandate to educate our own children to the highest level possible? #2....The younger (and older) Gorillas have an enrichment plan. Shouldn't that enrichment plan go as far as to teach them as much as possible with picture books, appropriate toys and lots of videos? If they can learn about what the world outside the Zoo looks like, how humans behave within the human environment...maybe slowly over generations we can integrate them into our world safely? They will always need protection of course!! They are so smart and if we could only help them to communicate then we would know what then want, need, dream about having and all their desires. So many ethical questions in my mind..... I just want them to have as much autonomy and control in their own lives as "humanly" possible... To me their world seems small and so confined. The idea that their lives are on display...yeah it's really cool for us! But how would they want to live their lives if they could tell us? I think we need to know what they WANT and how they want to live their lives and simply honor that.

I’ve seen different styles applied to baby gorilla rearing depending on Moms and their styles (ie highly protective with the baby-a la Genki and Kintaro in Kyoto or a more “free range” Approach - if any viewers are familiar with Tayari and Jabali in Taipei Tayari’s mothering style is more “free range” and independent with son Jabali ) and it all seems to work and the children develop beautifully and healthily. Gorilla and orangutan Moms are incredible!!! I’m in awe of them. 🦍♥️
@@larrysanimalsafari it does indeed seem to cause some delays in some cases. Kintaro for example wasn’t put down on the ground by Genki until he was about 8 months old or so. He was very spindly for a while but once he got active he caught right up with other gorilla babies his age and is today as active and physically developed as any other normal and healthy 5-year-old gorilla. Genki has some neuroses though and is VERY (overly) protective of her baby. Kintaro does fine now though despite the initial setbacks of somewhat delayed physical development as he wasn’t using his supporting muscles until about eight months old. Jabali on the other hand was very sturdy by around 4 months of age (or so) because of Tayari’s “free range” mothering approach Time seems to be the great equalizer in these instances. 🦍♥️

They’re one of the best behaved and I see Kebi watching alpha female Freddy and learning so much from her. I’m so glad they really liked each other and bonded themselves before they were introduced to Mokolo. Thanks for all the great content Larry and forgive me going on and on. Freddie is a wonderful mom for Jameela! Warms my heart to see them together. Kayembe is so funny to watch. Typical two year old. He desperately wants a playmate. Watching these amazing animals makes me smile! 😊 Thanks Larry!
Quick question. So kyembe is not Freddie’s bio son correct? Has she ever had her own children ? She had wonderful motherly instincts for sure and its wonderful to see she will Accept these babies
I’ve heard of 4 from zoo leadership, although an unofficial gorilla stud book lists a 5th baby that survived about 10 months. but I don’t have any other supporting material at this time. So… let’s say 4 for now (✅)
Has anyone noticed that Jameela kind of looks like Freedie? It's a miracle isn't it that fate sometimes knows that they should be together and realizes that they resemble one another as if they truly were mother and daughter! Food for thought huh?
Uhohhh! Kayembe is apoplectic in the beginning! Was that a rock he threw? Poor guy. The Nneka is having none of him at the end. It hurts my heart for him. P.S. the “rock” was the Fred Flintstone Football.
Kaye mbe is putting out the “ but I’m the baby “ vibe! lol. My oldest daughter was the same way when I brought her little sister home rofl ! It’s so eerie to me how much both humans and gorillas are similar in almost all their behavior. Sometimes I even wonder who should be on the “ other” side of the glass.
Awwww - baby girl is already eyeing off that solid food with interest❣️😋 She’s so alert and active. I love how Kayembe plops himself down right next to her at 5:40 - he really just wants to be close to her and she seems perfectly comfortable with it - even gives him a bop on the head! ❤😂 I think Jameela is going to be a tough, outgoing little cookie as she grows up - Kayembe better watch out. 😂😂 Kayembe chillin’ in his donut with his football just cracked me up❣️😂
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video and for showing the outside exhibit area. Boy that Kayembe is a funny boy! He looked so cute in his inner tube, just sitting and thinking …. what can I get into now or who can I bother. LOL 😂 Mokolo was like scratching his head like ….. hope my boy doesn’t want to play right now as I want a nap! 😅 I can’t say enough about Freddie bonding with lil Jameela! It’s so wonderful to see. I hope we can see Jameela nursing her sometime. Do you know how often babies nurse? I LOVE how protective she is of Jameela when Kayembe comes bouncing/ tumbling in around Jameela. She’s stern but tender. ❤❤❤❤
Awwww...Jameela Is Coming Along Just Beautifully. Freddie Is A Great Mother, And Kayembe Is Being A Typical 2 year old. Such A Wonderful Union. I Have A Question, I never see them Eating Fruit, Is Fruit A Part Of Their Regular Diet?? Thanks Larry ❤❤❤❤
Hi❣️Fruit is like sweets or cake for gorillas - something that should only be enjoyed occasionally and in small quantities. It’s not a huge part of their diet in the wild - they mainly eat leaves, grasses, bark, roots, etc. Their stomachs are specially adapted to process tough plant matter like that. Fruit is full of sugar and carbohydrates and can contribute to weight gain and heart disease, which is a major killer of captive gorillas, especially males. 😢
If I can tag along, this week I learned that while gorillas sometimes eat bananas, the bananas we have delivered to Ohio are much different than the bananas in Africa (sugar content for example)
@@larrysanimalsafari That was my next question, Bananas...Why have Gorillas been long associated with Bananas? Which ones are sweeter? In watching other videos, I've never seen a Gorilla eat Bananas In The Wild
I do not think they will do that. Let Jameela think Freddie was her mom. What if Jameela had lots of questions? We have no gorilla psychologists to help we help her work things out, right? 🤣 funny but true. (Seriously though, once she is ready to reproduce the team on the gorilla SSP decides where she will live out her life.)
While we have many similarities, gorillas develop faster especially when it comes to strength and reproductive age (age 8 is common for females, males can “help” reproduce at age 10)
Sorry for all that writing before. It made me think of another question. How are Kunda and Kay related? I guess they’re not related at all to Jameela so would it be unreasonable for the three of them to make their own troop and the future? Probably there will be more babies though, and it might be difficult to separate them from the other kids in the future. Anyway, I guess I’m getting ahead of myself. Have a lovely day. ❤
@@vjc2270 got it. Because I’m just learning about this troop. It wasn’t clear to me if Kay’s biological mom was pregnant when she got there. Everything I’ve seen of her so far seems to be away from the troop. It could be because I see her during breakfast only but she’s always sitting in the same place by herself. Anyway, thanks for your answer.
I am a bit concerned that they found a mother for Jameela who is 50 already. I know 50 is the high end of life expectancy. How long do infants need their mothers considering Freddie’s age?
Are the zookeepers going to wean Jameela off the bottle? I'm pretty confident that Freddie can produce enough milk for Jameela and that Jameela is a good nurser and has the ability to drink as much milk from Freddie as she needs.
They have trained Freddie to bring Jameela to the mesh for bottle feedings, so they don't intend to stop. It was the same for Kayembe when he was Jameela's age.
Thanks bhowl - also they will offer multiple bottles daily to Jameela ( just like they did with Kayembe) and allow Jameela to decline bottles when she wants to. She will likely wean herself off the bottles - as she changes her eating habits to the greens and browse like the older gorillas eat.
Btw, do you know if the kids received a gift from gorilla life? Possibly a ball with holes in it or did they already have that ball? The guy who runs gorilla live channel mentioned something about it, but I wasn’t sure if he was saying he was sending a gift, or if he was saying that somebody else did and it was the same kind of ball that he got for his gorilla friends. I’m just not sure what he meant and I was curious.
I suppose it was a silly question anyway. I guess I thought it would be neat. I know the guy from GL was thinking a lot about Jameela. The mother of the troop he films would be a good mother to her. Of course, traveling to Japan would be extremely stressful and if things didn’t work out, it would be a big problem. Still, I think his viewers would like to see her be a mom to a baby again. It’s clear now that Freddie was the perfect choice.
There are no mountain gorillas in North American zoos. They are all Western Lowland. Mountain gorillas are found in cooler temperatures than Western L.

From what I have seen (just a few zoos) the outside seems good. The inside is just Okay. Columbus Ohio, which has had 54 baby gorillas, and has 14 or 15 gorillas seems smaller on the inside. But they have had good success.
She experienced hormonal changes while caring for Kayembe. (She became his surrogate mom because his birth mom, Nneka, did not care for the baby Kayembe. ). That resulted in her beginning to lactate to allow the nursing.
wondering if jameela is cutting teeth as she was trying to chew on moms hand. I don't think she was after the lettuce . I feel a little sorry for Kayembe ... he wants mom and now mom busy with new little one.
So, gut gegessen, jetzt wird Mittagsschlaf gemacht. 😉😴 Kayembe sagt bestimmt:" Mama, schläfst du schon, Mama schläfst du schon, Mama schläfst du schon.......???" 🤣🥰❤❤❤
so wheres freddies children at and so the silverback and her has never matted then and so did freddie nurse the little boy or did his mommy and so he does know thats his birth mom or what
Freddie’s children are spread out in other zoos. Four of the have survived to adulthood. Freddie began lactating when she was caring for Kayembe. She never stopped lactating and then Jameela showed up. Her natural instincts kicked in and she felt compelled to care for the new infant that just “showed up”.

Freddie is a wonderful mom for Jameela! Warms my heart to see them together. Kayembe is so funny to watch. Typical two year old. He desperately wants a playmate. Watching these amazing animals makes me smile! 😊 Thanks Larry!
You are welcome, thanks for sharing a comment today.
Larry thank you for the video, they are all amazing.

Thanks! Larry I forgot to add it to my original comment, which I do quite often nowadays. That’s okay and I know you understand my situation.
No problem. Glad you following along! 👋😁
Thank you Larry for these video's it is awesome to see everyone progressing.

You are welcome, and thanks for following along, you’ve been with me for quite a while. 👍😁
Hear, hear! 👏👏👏
Thanks!
Thank you Shawna for the extra support. Sorry this is so late. I was on vacation across the country (Grand Canyon). Thanks for following along
Thank you Larry, for the update
👍😁
Quick question. So kyembe is not Freddie’s bio son correct? Has she ever had her own children ? She had wonderful motherly instincts for sure and its wonderful to see she will
Accept these babies
I believe Freddie has raised 5 of her own babies. Larry can correct me if I'm mistaken.
I’ve heard of 4 from zoo leadership, although an unofficial gorilla stud book lists a 5th baby that survived about 10 months. but I don’t have any other supporting material at this time. So… let’s say 4 for now (✅)
SO SWEET, LARRY. YOU'RE THE BEST!!! COVERING THIS IN DEPTH FOR ALL OF US.
Thank you, glad you’re enjoying these videos! 👏😁
Has anyone noticed that Jameela kind of looks like Freedie? It's a miracle isn't it that fate sometimes knows that they should be together and realizes that they resemble one another as if they truly were mother and daughter! Food for thought huh?
👍😁
I love love love gorillas!!
👏👏👏😁
Uhohhh! Kayembe is apoplectic in the beginning! Was that a rock he threw? Poor guy. The Nneka is having none of him at the end. It hurts my heart for him. P.S. the “rock” was the Fred Flintstone Football.
I was wondering what that was. I thought maybe a Kong?
Yes, a toy football
Kaye mbe is putting out the “ but I’m the baby “ vibe! lol. My oldest daughter was the same way when I brought her little sister home rofl ! It’s so eerie to me how much both humans and gorillas are similar in almost all their behavior. Sometimes I even wonder who should be on the “ other” side of the glass.
👍😁
I wish I’d had a mother like Freddie. 😢
👍😁
Awwww - baby girl is already eyeing off that solid food with interest❣️😋 She’s so alert and active. I love how Kayembe plops himself down right next to her at 5:40 - he really just wants to be close to her and she seems perfectly comfortable with it - even gives him a bop on the head! ❤😂 I think Jameela is going to be a tough, outgoing little cookie as she grows up - Kayembe better watch out. 😂😂 Kayembe chillin’ in his donut with his football just cracked me up❣️😂
I bet, keeping up with a rough and tumbling big brother might just make a tomboy outta her. 🤣
Jameela and Kayembe are precious! Do keepers still feed Jameela extra bottles to make sure she's getting enough nutrition?
Yes, Jameela gets bottles to be sure she gets all she needs.
Happy Mother's Day to best mother in the 🌎 ❤
👏👏😁
It’s soo good that she will let Kayembe near her!!! ❤❤
👏😁
I am simply enthralled
👏👏😁
Agradezco escuchar a mis espectadores.
Thanks for this video.
👍✅
The gorilla mom sure has to work hard. It is 24/7, unlike humans who can take a break.
👍😁
Jameela nurses several times a day. Thanks for sharing your comments today!
Cuteness alert ‼️
👏👏😁
@@vjc2270 Awww.... Thank You... Good To Know.
@@larrysanimalsafari Ok, sounds good 😊
Larry do you think they will ever try to re-introduce Jameela to her birth mother?
I do not think they will do that. Let Jameela think Freddie was her mom. What if Jameela had lots of questions? We have no gorilla psychologists to help we help her work things out, right? 🤣 funny but true. (Seriously though, once she is ready to reproduce the team on the gorilla SSP decides where she will live out her life.)
@@larrysanimalsafari Wow okay thank you. I appreciate your videos and hard work.
@@genesisbooking27 👍
Do theses babies develop at the same rate as human babies?
While we have many similarities, gorillas develop faster especially when it comes to strength and reproductive age (age 8 is common for females, males can “help” reproduce at age 10)
Sorry for all that writing before. It made me think of another question. How are Kunda and Kay related? I guess they’re not related at all to Jameela so would it be unreasonable for the three of them to make their own troop and the future? Probably there will be more babies though, and it might be difficult to separate them from the other kids in the future. Anyway, I guess I’m getting ahead of myself. Have a lovely day. ❤
Mokolo is the father of both Kunda and Kayembe, so they’re half-siblings. 😊
Thanks✅
@@vjc2270 got it. Because I’m just learning about this troop. It wasn’t clear to me if Kay’s biological mom was pregnant when she got there. Everything I’ve seen of her so far seems to be away from the troop. It could be because I see her during breakfast only but she’s always sitting in the same place by herself. Anyway, thanks for your answer.
What is than oval shaped thing Kayembe is chewing on?
A toy football
I am a bit concerned that they found a mother for Jameela who is 50 already. I know 50 is the high end of life expectancy. How long do infants need their mothers considering Freddie’s age?
They are usually very close to mom the first 3 to 4 years.
Oh, o kayembe é arruaceiro mesmoooo, brincalhao d++++++++
🤣👍
👏😁
I have no info on where the play balls come from.
Larry, Are There Any "Mountain Gorillas In Captivity?
Mountain gorillas haven't survived in captivity.
@@BigOleOgre Why? Is It Because Of The Elevation Of The Land?
There are no mountain gorillas in North American zoos. They are all Western Lowland. Mountain gorillas are found in cooler temperatures than Western L.
@@larrysanimalsafari Thank You...Are Mountain Gorillas Larger Than Low Land Gorillas...They are Awesome and Absolutely Beautiful....Primates Are My Very Favorite Animal, and "Gorilla's Are #1".
There is one female Eastern lowland gorilla in Europe & she is beautiful. Her name is Amoharo.🦍
Tchau Larry ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😅😅😅😅😅😅

Is this considered a good enclosure ? Just wondering
From what I have seen (just a few zoos) the outside seems good. The inside is just Okay. Columbus Ohio, which has had 54 baby gorillas, and has 14 or 15 gorillas seems smaller on the inside. But they have had good success.
Gorillas are so sweet ❤️❤️🦍🦍🦍
👍😁
How is Freddie able to breastfeed? Where is her baby?
She experienced hormonal changes while caring for Kayembe. (She became his surrogate mom because his birth mom, Nneka, did not care for the baby Kayembe. ). That resulted in her beginning to lactate to allow the nursing.
GREAT
@@marciaesters3250 👍😁
Quem era Sekani ?
Sekani is Jameela’s birth mom who lives at the Fort Wirth Zoo in Texas, USA. He delivered via a c-section, then did not accept her baby after.
wondering if jameela is cutting teeth as she was trying to chew on moms hand. I don't think she was after the lettuce . I feel a little sorry for Kayembe ... he wants mom and now mom busy with new little one.
The timing seems right for teething. 😁
A Tamidol morreu, se não me engano o mês passado.
🤔
So, gut gegessen, jetzt wird Mittagsschlaf gemacht. 😉😴 Kayembe sagt bestimmt:" Mama, schläfst du schon, Mama schläfst du schon, Mama schläfst du schon.......???" 🤣🥰❤❤❤
🤣. Just like a little kid, asking over and over again.
wow ! really kool

Has anyone seen Jameela nurse from Freddie yet? ❤
Yes
Freddie adalah wanita yang sangat istimewa.

Aww poor Kayembe has no one to play with....he looks so bored
👍
so wheres freddies children at and so the silverback and her has never matted then and so did freddie nurse the little boy or did his mommy and so he does know thats his birth mom or what
Freddie’s children are spread out in other zoos. Four of the have survived to adulthood. Freddie began lactating when she was caring for Kayembe. She never stopped lactating and then Jameela showed up. Her natural instincts kicked in and she felt compelled to care for the new infant that just “showed up”.
@@larrysanimalsafari i do love that freddies is a great mom and all and im so happy that this is all working out i just know they are so much like us humans and they show so much the same ways but hey i had clicked on to another zoo in china i think and says they have its a name starts with a g but she had been taken from her mother years ago and had been replaced back into the same zoo again and how its very rare for a mother to accept that child again after being taken and when they r taken they usually never can be apart of the family again bc they r rejected why is that tho i mean do they not know it is their children and this one did get taken back in with its mother and now the mother has passed but whats that all about and as i have said im new into all this and the fact we are saving animals from going extinct. but i never got into knowing the animals and now im into learning all the ways and find it is amazing world but some of their ways i dont get just yet and sorry if i ask alot of questions and always thank u for ur videos they are so amazing
Jameela is hungry! Freddie may not have enough milk! She needs a bottle feeding.
Okie dokie, keepers are ready to provide bottles. 👍

I feel Jameela looks week and not nursing enough. Maybe.
😳. Well, there are at least 3 full time people who work with these gorillas every day. I feel confident they can monitor and offer additional bottles as needed.
Someone please remove the rocks. I am worried because he is throwing them. I am afraid for Freddie and Jameela. 😢❤
I believe that was a toy football. Thanks for caring though.
